Sorry to be the science geek, but Sequoias are not found in northern California; Redwoods are much closer to San Fran. Of course, Reds vs. Redwoods doesn't sound anywhere near as good.

True, but the Giants' Triple A affiliate is the Fresno Grizzlies. Fresno is located near the Sequoia and the Kings Canyon National Parks...so, that's kind of a connection.

Sure, but he won on what should have been an illegal kick to the face.

Grande is basically saying there's little validity to the "Moneyball" idea because the A's had Hudson, Zito and Mulder in the early 2000s.

Uh, someone should brush George up on the A's current record. I'm pretty sure Billy Beane's model works extremely well.

Just a strange comment from Grande. Also: Typical.

I think what he was getting at was it probably wouldn't have mattered much what model they were using. With that starting pitching they were gonna be good. In the end tho, they haven't won a World Series in a really long time!

Votto looking pretty gimpy today.
In what way? It sure looked like it last night with a couple swings and he was bending over the plate with his hands on his knees before a couple pitches.

Choking up about 4 inches until his last PA against the lefty (double). Announcers said they'd never seen anyone choke up that much since some dude that pre-dated me. Hard to drive anything when choking up that much.

I think we're going to have to talk about Votto before long.

When I start to get frustrated with Jorge Gran-de, I remind myself that he's no longer the Reds' primary TV PBP announcer. And that brings a smile to my face.

For all of Thom's faults, he blows Grande out of the water. I even greatly prefer the bland Jim Kelch over Grande.

Going to the third scoreless.

Hey, a professional hitter up there taking pitches. I like it.

Schumaker was clearly taking until he got a strike ... and was also taking on 3-1. Fouls off a 3-2 pitch. And then he gets a hit.

That's a great AB.

More of our hitters should take until they get a strike and take on 3-1. Not guys like Votto, Bruce, Mesoraco and Frazier, but most of the other guys.

I hate to beat this dead horse, but Hamilton is on pace to be a 6 WAR player this season. Choo on pace for 1 WAR.

I would say less than 5 percent of Reds fans thought it would have been a good idea to give Choo a 7-year, $130 million contract.

But 100 percent of Reds fans thought there would be a dropoff from Choo to Hamilton this year. Instead, we upgraded. It's amazing to me (and I've been a huge Billy fan the entire time). I never thought Choo would play this bad and I never thought Hamilton would play so well this early in his career.

With Pena catching today, I'd let Mes catch the whole SD series and let Pena play first base. Give Votto off the three SD games and then the off-day Thursday.

Reds could bring up Lutz or Soto for the series and if necessary could use Joey to pinch hit.

Something will have to give here, it's a shame for the guy to play hurt.

It presents quite the conundrum. On the one hand, you want him to be healthy and effective and you'd imagine time off would help facilitate that. On the other hand, he still provides great value in terms of getting on base and hitting singles and doubles and the offense really needs him.

There are two options. The first is to DL Votto, let him get whatever treatment he needs, bring him back whenever.

The second is to keep him active, but if so the Reds need to rest him more.

I don't view the status quo as an option. He can't play every day like this.
