IMHO - made much bigger by the total failure in San Diego --- win 2 of 3 there and there is less pressure to gain on the Crew -- yeah dead horse now

True. But in any event, Reds have played fewer home games than all other MLB teams. This home stand is the equalizer with 11 home games in ten days.

This is the opportunity to pick up ground. Reds are one game over .500 at home, winning teams do much better than that.

There's no one critical stretch, but this is as important as any, and .500 ball at home won't cut it.

Winning this series would make me forget SD.
Huge series.. probably the biggest of the year so far.
Luckily the Brewers lost 2 while we floundered in SD, so we didn't fall too much farther behind.
Just 7 games back is doable, but we have to cash in these opportunities.
I think this is a 3 game series.. Would really like to take at least 2 of 3 and then only be 6 back.

nice play from bp... he is limping a bit ( a bit too often the past two seasons)

looks like everyone is in the ballpark. not much going on in this thread.

two quick infield ground outs and now a infield hit (simon´s pickoff throw got away from votto => lucroy advances to second)

lineout to bruce to end the top of the first

Bruce needs to stop hitting so many grounders into the shift. I don't mind him pulling the ball, but has to elevate it.

Frazier had this problem last year. Power guys need to elevate the ball or the power goes to waste.

Schumaker starting in LF is an indictment on Jocketty's perennial inability to acquire decent backups.

And I like Schumaker. It's just that he shouldn't be a guy you start semi-regularly in LF.

I guess Walt and Price have mutually decided Lutz isn't going to be that guy.

07-04-2014, 08:11 PM
Everyone was telling Hamilton to work on hitting the ball into the ground. He's a good enough hitter, that what he ends to do is work on hitting the ball hard.

This is one example of having a different approach in certain ballparks. In San Diego I want Hamilton bunting and slapping the ball around.

In GABP most guys should swing away because a HR is almost never out of the question.

What do you suggest then, Kc61?

I started suggesting that the Reds acquire an outfielder early in the 2013 season, after Ludwick went down. I've been saying it for about 15 months.

Your point about Schumaker is a good one. He's a fine utility man, but I'd rather have a better hitter starting against RHP in LF.

Ludwick hasn't generated power. Heisey is, these days, a low OBP player. The Reds just need to bite the bullet and acquire another outfielder who can hit.

"Lucroy with a looper" lol

A ball hit hard enough to RCF that makes it anywhere near the warning track so that BHam or Bruce can't get it is not a looper....Lucroy's went over the fence in the same description.

Kind of surprised Simon was left in the game there. Had a very high leverage seventh inning. Still Reds up two, need five outs. I would get Chapman up immediately, not much margin for error here.

Zach Duke, our old friend. Reds will send up Bruce, Mes, Schu.

Bruce really needs to get it going. Not that time, grounds to short.

Now Mesoraco.

Jay Bruce now hitting .230. 3-1 count on Mesoraco. Now a foul, full count. You'd think they would pitch around Mes here. Devin fans.

So now Schumaker steps up to a round of applause.

Skip laces a single to left, he's had three hits tonight and an outstanding catch. Great game for Skip.

Cozart now up, long at bat, throws to first, deep count. Strikes out.

Ninth inning.

Probably not going to happen, but I'd let Broxton pitch the 9th. 2 run lead, why use Chapman if you don't have to. Odds are good we'll need him the next 2 nights.

Horrible mistake by Jocketty to let Duke go, given Marshall's status. Been great for MIL.

For one thing the scheduled hitters include two lefties.

For another thing you don't mess around with close winning ballgames against the division leader.

Chapman, well rested, gets strike one on Segura. In the dirt, 1-1 count.

Line shot foul. 1-2 count. Now 2-2 on a fastball inside.

Fouled off. Still even count.

Another foul. Segura hanging in with good at bat.

And a shot to Frazier who makes the play. Two down.

Now Mark Reynolds. 1-1 count. Off speed over for strike two.

2 things. Chapman is NOT a sure thing no matter what people want to think. And secondly, Broxton's no bum out there either.

All I can say is that there have been many times when we used the closer when we didn't really need to and then you DO need to for several days in a row and he's unavailable.

Bottom line, I'm not a fan of automatically using relief pitchers by a pre-set playbook and only in 1 inning (or less) stints. Nothing against Chapman or the way it played out. It just seems to me that many here want to see Chapman go more than 1 inning...doesn't that apply to the OTHER guys in the pen too?

Charles, Chapman is your closer. One of the best. Biggest game of the season. Has four days rest. Broxton hasn't closed in weeks and hasn't pitched more than an inning in awhile, maybe all season.

I don't think it's even a close question. Sorry, I understand your viewpoint.

Miami hitter pulled a Cozart/Heisey special and pulled a way outside pitch to the 3B. I think it was McGhee? They think they can overpower a 95+ fastball on the outside corner
and pull it. Stupid.
