Bruce is 4 for his last 24 since his little 3-game HR binge vs. MLW and Chicago. 3 BBs an 1 XBH. He is sixth best in OPS on the team and Pena is getting close to catching him. Maybe moving him down in the lineup should be considered?

This doesn't make much sense right now. When Bruce is really struggling, he isn't walking at all, and is striking out at a higher rate.

Instead, he is putting the bat on the ball, the hits just aren't falling in. There is also no one in the lineup that should be moved ahead of him based on performance, sans Mesoraco, and he is in the very next spot.

Bruce even in a funk, is one of the Reds three most dangerous hitters right now.

Our lineup is going to look ugly for a while ... I just need to get used to it.

You take Votto and BP out of this lineup -- and start doing things like batting Cozart in the two hole consistently -- and it induces the vomit reflex when I look at the lineup.

And as Price said yesterday, Votto and BP aren't coming back anytime soon. We knew that about BP, but I was hopeful Votto would be activated soon after the break. Oh well. Nothing new this season. "The Season of Injuries."

Well I guess that could be the case, but then I would point to the fact that those two guys had these K rates in Triple-A: 15.9% and 33.6%. The guy who can't make contact or get on base against Triple-A pitchers is starting.... the short porch only matters if you can put the bat on the ball.

Is there any analysis concerning the abundance of the shift being employed against Jay Bruce this year and how that might be affecting his hit total?

I have no numbers in front of me, but I just don't remember the shift being used against him as much last year as much as it has this year. So far, it appears pretty effective.

Strictly a lefty/righty decision.

When you look at the Reds lineup today, and consider Jay Bruce's numbers this year, it's tough to view the Reds as serious contenders. Even at 2.5 games out.

The Reds have seven more DH games in AL stadiums, NY, Baltimore, Cleveland. It would have been a good time to get a hitter, but I've been saying that for fifteen months.

Bruce's ISO power dropped from 2012 to 2013, and now again in 2014.

Bruce's ground ball rate is up significantly from last year.

Bruce's ISO power dropped from 2012 to 2013, and now again in 2014.

The ground ball rate is the tip off to me. I think he is compensating for an injury or his swing is messed up for some other reason.

My guess is we'll hear after the season that Bruce played hurt all year.

I have no idea if this is accurate, but it seems like teams are shifting on Bruce even more than in the past. Teams are shifting much more overall this year, so I assume it is true. More ground balls and less ground ball singles. Horrible combination

Because in every instance for his career where he as gone through brutal stretches he has pulled out of it. And I don't know if it matters if he gets it together this year or not it isn't like they're going to trade for a pending FA RF and bench Bruce. Reds need to focus on 1B/LF help.

He doesn't have to be hurt to not be at full strength. Votto had a similar surgery in 2012 and I know he had an additional surgery but he was basically a singles hitter when he came back. Just because someone isn't hurt doesn't mean they're at full strength.

Speaking of Reds players who have inexplicably lost all their power, have a look at Zack Cozart's numbers. 2012: .399 SLG, 15 HR, 35 2B, 4 3B; 2013: .381 SLG, 12 HR, 30 2B, 3 3B.

Where did a lot of players power go? I mean I know the PED thing but ho the heck do you lose any power at all.

It's like Johnnie LeMaster has taken over his body and hitting skills.

I know offense is down in general but pitchers like Phelps and this guy..... have no business shutting anyone down.

It does not help that most of these guys hack at anything close and do not force this guy to come over the plate to them.

Votto does it and gets criticized to death for it.

Not from me. If he was not hurt, he could show these hitters the new way to approach baseball hitting now. I guess the chocking up from the get go is what gets some people.

Still not as bad as 1967-68, where you had no teams with ERA's over 4....I think.

What's an acceptable rate?

For a guy like Votto? Once every 10-15 AB's.

What's the point of his choking up with 2 strikes if he's still going to K 130 times a year?

Votto does it and still K's at a disgusting rate

18% K rate this year. League average is over 20%.
