I wondered that too.

My only two guesses are one, just a normal full day off before heading to Milwaukee, or two, with Pena catching for the first time since returning, and Soto back to AAA, there is not a backup catcher and you would have some problems if Pena runs into trouble or gets hurt.

Yeah, I was just going to post that the Reds have taken their slightly below average NL offense and added two components this series - high strikeout total and only two walks.

ardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/20/reds-interested-in-marlon-byrd-and-antonio-bastardo/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs

Reds interested in Marlon Byrd and Antonio Bastardo

Cincinnati is going to be without second baseman Brandon Phillips (thumb) and first baseman Joey Votto (quad) for another month at least, so to stay in contention in a crowded National League Central race upgrades will probably have to be made at the July 31 deadline. And the hunt has already begun.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Reds have expressed interest in acquiring outfielder Marlon Byrd and left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo from the Phillies, who are expected to be one of the most active sellers later this month.

Byrd, 36, is batting .264/.317/.476 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI in 96 games this season for Philadelphia. He signed a two-year, $16 million contract over the winter that includes an $8 million vesting option for 2016.

Bastardo, 28, has a 3.38 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 51/24 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings this season out of the Phillies’ bullpen. He’d fill the Reds’ need in lefty relief with Sean Marshall (shoulder) done for the year.

Bastardo is making $2 million this season and will be arbitration-eligible for the final time in 2015.

We'll Hernandez is responsible for the 2 runs. If I was Cueto I would have been tossed.

Please. Hernandez has been tight, but the catcher darting back and forth isn't doing Johnny any favors.

The walk to the nine hitter wasn't real close, Jeter's single wasn't the ump, Ellsbury's single wasn't the ump.

Cueto only allowed two runs he should be winning this game if the team would hit.

The only real weakness is the injuries. With Votto and Phillips healthy this team would have won the division.

O really? Votto has been almost a liability when he's played so he's not missed. How about LF, SS, RF, middle relieving? Those are a lot of problems that need fixed, not to mention the starting pitching hasn't been near as good these last few weeks.

And amazingly they're only a few games out of first place in the division.

I'd like them to make a move or two, but there's about 20 MLB teams who'd trade places with the Reds any day of the week.
