Peralta has been good against the Reds in his career.

Some small sample numbers,

Hamilton has not faced him.
Schumaker: 1-3
Frazier: 1-8, 2B
Mesoraco has never faced him.
Lutz: 1-3, HR
Heisey: 5-10, HR
Santiago: 0-2
Cozart: 2-17, 2B

As for the bench,

Bruce: 3-16, HR, BB
Ludwick, 1-2
Pena: 0-3

No it doesn't. He's been hitting like pooh and Price rests his players often.

Unless you think Skip Schumaker, Chris Heisey, Donald Lutz, and Roman Santiago are going to take his job.

Then yeah, it thickens.

If someone had told me before the season began that on 7/21 our lineup would be this one, I would have straight up laughed in their face. Injuries suck. Plain and simple.

That being said, I'm continuously amazed that the Reds are where they are in the standings with what they've had to deal with. If they can continue to hold on until Votto and Phillips are back, they're due some good karma. Aren't they?

They've done it all on the backs of the starting pitchers. I just hope the pitchers aren't wearing down. Cueto hasn't been as sharp his last few outings. Leake hasn't either.

Price doesn't rest his top lefty power hitters against a righty facing the division leader.

Obviously nobody is taking Bruce's job. But it's interesting that Price viewed the situation to be serious enough to pull Bruce out of a big game.

Interested to hear his comments on this.

P.S. - Price says Bruce may be trying to do too much in light of all the injuries. So it's a day off following a tough series. Still, IMO, pretty unusual. Maybe he'll hit a pinch homer to win the game.

With Votto out, Phillips out. With no true starting LF (IMO). With a bad hitting SS. And with resting a good hitter.

Nice for Lutz to get the start, but since the Phillips injury these lineups baffle me.

Why not Pena at first? He plays the position ok. He's had some good games hitting.

Nothing against Lutz, I just can't figure out these usage patterns.

Pena has a 675 OPS in 24 games at first

_Sir_Charles_
07-21-2014, 08:39 PM
Kinda like being constipated or having diarrhea. :)

Ignore the names for a second and look at the numbers.

123 ab's, .867 ops. 21 k's, 7 bb's.
119 ab's, .668 ops. 45 k's, 9 bb's.

I know which one I would call up. They both fill a positional need too, so that's not an issue. It's down to the bat only.

I know some will point to Soto's time with the Reds as a reason to not bring him up. But don't discount this.

April, he got 10 ab's.
May, he got 18 ab's.
July, he got 2 ab's.

You can't expect ANYBODY to produce with that kind of playing time. As soon as he got regular reps in AAA, he produced.

07-21-2014, 08:45 PM
I'm guessing the reason that the Reds have not called Neftali Soto up and given him regular playing time is because none of the decision makers involved think he has any hope against Major League pitching. And given that his (admittedly-limited) at-bats have featured a Costanzo-esque level of cluelessness, I cannot reasonably disagree with them.

Now, as to why they haven't made any attempt to acquire a 1B/OF that can hit at this level, even if merely as a bench bat and spot starter, that's the puzzler. It's been a problem off and on since Opening Day last year.

Yeah, the odd thing is that the Reds prefer veterans - yet when there are needs they don't acquire veterans. So it's kind of lose lose.

I'm sure you're exactly right, they just don't have confidence in Soto at this point. But it's natural folks would want a guy hitting .331 in the minors over, well, nobody in particular.

FO is looking for help, although the GM said it may not be done by July 31.

How far out are they gonna be by then? That team rather heroically hit the break in contention against long odds, then was the time for some reinforcements. Instead, the usual from Walt. So irritating.

Bruce, Ludwick, even Pena on the bench. I understand with Bruce, but not sure how much we can expect from the actual Reds players with this lineup.

Why is Thom upset? Didn't Hamilton hit it to the right side to advance the runner?

Maybe bc Hamilton swung at 2 straight pitches in the dirt after Peralta threw 4 straight balls to Latos? After the first 2 strikes to Latos, Peralta threw 3 more strikes the rest of the inning, yet 1,2, 3 in the order could not take advantage. Peralta might have just walked a few runs in if the Reds would have let him. And after all that Peralta then puts together a better AB than any Red has all year to start a rally.

When Phillips went out, Price said he would have a chance to use his subs more.

He mentioned Heisey and Santiago specifically.

Each of them had some success. Heisey had a homer, Santiago a number of hits.

So now, you can't get them out of the lineup. And while Ludwick hasn't had a good year, he is more of a starting player than Heisey for sure.

Reds had a big homestand, but the road against good teams is tough. You have to go with your best guys. And the team has to play especially well.
