The key to that at bat was Bruce took the first pitch a fastball right down the middle. He was immediately behind in the count and ultimately took a defensive swing to avoid the K.

Needs to be aggressive and stop trying to be Joey Votto.

I think that's the problem.....they still think they have a chance in case Votto comes back and when BP comes back.

Not saying I would not try and trade for some help in LF.... but I would also look to move someone like Heisey off this team.

Some things they can do for this year.

Don't play Cozart against RHP.
Spend resources to get Bruce all the coaching he needs, his problems can be solved.
Get a lefty platoon stop gap for LF.

Wouldn't try too hard, this season is tough, Reds are in fourth in the division and fourth in the second wild card hunt.

Age and maturity. That's the difference. Latos has better stuff IMO. But he needs to go through what Homer went through the past 2 years or so. Homer really took a step forward in terms of being able to let things go and not let them fester. He still has work to do on it as well, but he's leaps and bounds better at it than he used to be. Latos I haven't seen take any steps forward on that front yet.

You're Bob C and his partners.

Your team cannot score at all and is sinking out of the race.

Can you possibly sit still and retain credibility with your fans?

Doesn't ownership have to insist on some change somewhere?

Would an organization like the Red Sox or even the Cardinals just sit back at this point?

I disagree. Right now the objective with the Reds is simply to throw any major league pitch over the plate. There is no need for deception, velocity, anything. Just throw your pitches over the plate and get your outs.

I wasn't referring to the Reds hitters. Just the fact that you don't have to have a killer fastball to blow hitters away. A wide variation between your fastball and your change/breaking pitch will more than make up for any lack of velocity. It's not about speed, it's about keeping the hitters timing off kilter. Fister does that just as well as anybody. He's hitting his spots, mixing it up well....you do that and you'll find success against any team. The Reds are just making it even easier than it should be. But it's not ALL the Reds fault...some props need to be given to Fister too.

You're obviously correct, deception is a key to good pitching.

I do think it's the Reds' hitters fault in this case, they can't hit anybody. All the guy needs is major league pitches.

But yes, as a general matter, deception is a key to good pitching, velocity or no.
