View Full Version : What do you find funny?

I've have been stuck once again by the realization that I'm the only person I know who doesn't find Jimmy Fallon funny. For me, watching him is like suffering through a really bad high school talent show. This thought started me examining my sense of humor. Here's what I found:

1. I rarely laugh out loud. This likely means something.

2. When I do, it tends to be at dry or absurdist humor. Monty Python, for instance.

3. I like some silly/physical humor, such as the Marx Brothers, but think the vast majority of it is simply mindless.

So I'm curious; what types of humor do others find funny?

Louis CK and Maria Bamford

It's hard, I love standup comedy, but I think 99% of it is bad. But when it is good, it's so good.

But I don't find Monty Python funny at all

I moved to Australia for a while when I was 18, but even before that, I mostly reacted to dry humour. After being exposed to British comedy in Sydney (including seeing every episode of Fawlty Towers over and over and seeing a double feature of Holy Grail and Life of Brian in the theatre,) the mould was set. And the spelling.

I don't find Jimmy Fallon funny at all, and have a few friends who agree with me, so you're not alone. However, nearly every sitcom that I find funny, gets cancelled almost immediately, and I can't stand the ones that last. So I definitely don't have my finger on then comedy pulse of America.

I generally like humor that is brutal, offensive, and thought provoking. My favorite comedians are Sarah Silverman, Louis CK, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, and the odd ball in the group, Bill Cosby. I love Cosby because he simply is funny. It doesn't matter what he's talking about, he makes it funny.

My least favorite comedians are the ones that scream and prance around the stage. Dane Cook is the worst example of this, but so many young comedians copy that style, and that's all the have. It gets them laughs from a drunk crowd at a comedy club, so they don't realize that it's just not funny, it's annoying.

The Simpsons. At any time, I have a good dozen or so Simpsons quotes going through my head. Certain episodes/lines never stop being funny to me. Even the bad episodes are still a little funny. It's my go-to thing when I need cheering up.

Oh, and elderly people cussing. That's always funny.

This is an interesting topic.

I like comedy that is obervational and witty most of all, but I can also appreciate a simple well executed joke.

My favorite comedians are guys like Jim Gaffigan, Brian Regan and Louis CK.

There are a lot of sitcoms I like and they vary in style from shows like Modern Family and Seinfeld to darker comedy like Louis or something like You're the Worst. I also generally like improv and sketch comedy like SNL or Second City.

I agree with most of yours. Don't like Fallon. I honestly don't find Conan all that funny on his show, but I've listened to him twice on Jimmy Pardo's podcast and I thought he was hysterical both times.

Dane Cook doesn't do it for me but I can admit that he's a talented performer on stage and I can appreciate that, the guys that copy his style and are less talented are the worst.

Jimmy Pardo is probably currently atop my favorite comedian list. Which I recently took a buddy to his comedy show and my friend didn't care for Pardo's act (or lack there of) at all.

I love to laugh. I believe I have a very good appreciation for humor and have been complimented on my wit. George Carlin will sit atop my list of favorites forever, but there is plenty of his material that doesn't strike me as all that funny. Entertaining, yes - but I don't laugh at everything he's ever said. In that same respect, sometimes I laugh at Jimmy Fallon, sometimes I don't. Their styles of comedy are very different, but that doesn't mean I'm not entertained.

Also, I really, really love Family Guy. Maybe it's because we represent the same generation, but Seth MacFarlane has definitely struck a chord with me. It's crude and stupid humor, but I laugh at every single episode. In full disclosure, I refused to watch it for many years until my friend (and my son) finally convinced me. I was reformed.

Mr. Show is hysterical to me while most of my friends don't "get it," and think it's a stupid show.

I think slapstick comedy does it the best for me. I still laugh at the three stoodges. A lot of the older sitcoms incorporated slapstick in their shows. I Love Lucy did a lot of this. For some reason a pie in the face at the right moment will get a good laugh from me.
I also like the dry humor someone like Bob Newhart could provide. I also like the sarcastic humor that someone like Don Rickles did. I know some dn't like that but I always took it for what it was, nothing really serious.
I find Fallon somewhat funny. He's better than most out there now. His humor is mostly topical and it will really depend on your mood and how you feel about the subject on whether you will laugh or not.

Funny:
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
Monty Python
Airplane! (30 years later still quoting those silly lines).
Some stand up guys/gals. Eddie Izzard is one of my favorites. George Carlin.

Not funny:
Will Ferrell especially the whole Anchorman thing. Never got it.
Spinal Tap. Didn't get it.

Not funny anymore:
Get Smart! I saw some old episodes (of course, they're all old) some time ago and couldn't understand how was it that I loved this show.

Entertaining but not necessarily laugh out funny:
The Simpsons
South Park

Oh, and I don't like Fallon either.

Kevin Nealon cracks me up. His current standup. His whole career approach.

Chris Farley is classic, but you have to avoid over doing it.

My first car was a beat-up 1990 Ford Escort (I know, you're jealous). It had a broken cassette tape deck with Rodney Dangerfield's No Respect stuck in it. I must have listened to that tape 100 times, and it always made me laugh.

Not funny:

Jim Carrey. Perhaps it was b/c I watched Ace Ventura the first time on the same day I had my wisdom teeth pulled, but while I appreciated his comedy on In Living Color, I've never cared for any of his comedies that I've seen.
Will Farrel. Great as Frank the Tank when he's more in a supporting role, haven't cared for much since then, especially Anchor Man. Seems like I'm the highlander in that regard.
Dane Cook

Funny:

Tosh.O I don't watch it regularly enough for it to get worn down, but I've found myself laughing myself out of breath on more than 1 occasion.
Chris Rock, at least his old stand up specials, not so much his recent movies.
Tommy Boy, watched it for the first time in probably 5-10 years the other night, still laugh at the scenes I know are coming up.
Bob & Tom. Some of the bits I've heard a few times too many that they've lost their funny, but I still get a laugh most days that I tune in.
Dow Thomas, RIP. Nothing like catching a live version of Sail Cats or Power & Light.
Kevin Pollack. You wouldn't expect it if you only knew him from movies like Grumpy old men or A Few Good Men, but a live show is always entertaining.

I could go on, but I'll cut it off there before I wreck the rest of my day thinking of new things I like/dislike

Funny: funny things. From slapstick to thought provoking. If it's well executed anything can make me laugh, as long as it's not unfunny.

Unfunny: things that further stereotypes, things that are pandering or pushes a tired agenda. Examples would be ridiculing a belief system or political party for cheap laughs and giving the mirage of making the comedian look enlightened. Also Jimmy Fallon.

Funny story. Years ago Jimmy tweeted during shark week that "FACT: Sharks only poop when they laugh."

I replied "FACT: Sharks have never pooped watching your show."

He blocked me.

I'm always amazed at how often once a comedian becomes successful their act either gets tired or they lose their touch. Guys like Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen, Dane Cook, and the whole Judd Apatow gang is getting very close. I think they were all legit funny at some point, but don't really do it for anyone anymore.

There's a certain type of humor, and I don't know what to call it, that's pleasant but not edgy enough to be laugh-out-loud funny. I'm thinking movies like My Cousing Vinny or The Princess Bride. I really enjoy that.

For the barrel laughs, you can't go wrong with Louis C.K. and Bill Burr, 1A and 1B as far as stand-up comedians go. I also like Conan.

Might've shared this before, but a bunch of friends and I were all set to go see Mitch perform in Virginia Beach for my birthday, but he died just a few days before the scheduled show. Such a shame; that guy was great.

Tosh is funny, but why do I always happen to be eating when I'm watching that show? Big mistake.

I'm not a big laugh-out-loud guy either, but Louis CK can get me going to the point that I have to press pause and get my breathing under control. He's the best.

yes, or at least most of it. Still don't find him all that funny. I did enjoy The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine and Bruce Almighty (only one of those 3 that he sort of tries to be funny) so its not like I despise all of his work, just the more traditional comedies. Which is weird, b/c he should be right up my ally. I love a lot of stupid comedies that would be of similar ilk to Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dubmer, etc... You mean sections like this might hit too close to home for some:

CUT TO: INT. JOSH'S OFFICE - DAY

They don't seem to be taking my response in the spirit in which it was
intended.

DONNA
Yeah.

JOSH
Seems to be a very unusual social structure. For instance, there is leader

to pride herself on her organizational skills and a certain amount of
discipline.

DONNA
Right. That's what's called a control freak.

JOSH
[getting visibly upset] Well, she does seems to do an awful lot of
scolding. "You've
posted in the wrong place. Stay on topic people. Don't use capital letters. I
don't have
time to tell you twice," when clearly, she does have time to tell us twice. But
that's
not the problem.

or

DONNA
I think you've gone 'round the bend.

JOSH
I'm dictating now. I don't think it falls under the category of "outrageous"
to suggest
that I might have friends on the other end of the Avenue who have the phone
number of
the GAO. Let me put this more plainly. The White House can get a GAO review
of anything
it wants without posing a threat to the separation of powers. And I believe
I'll use
capital, lowercase, or Sanskrit, right up until the moment the font police
cuff me and
read me Miranda!

DONNA
That'll show them.

JOSH
See, I think these are good people, by and large, but they've come under
the thumb of a
dictatorial ruler. So, as with a small, Central American country, my role
is to incite
the people to topple her

DONNA
You're way round the bend. Can I get you a damp towel or something?

JOSH
No, but do we have any Yoo-Hoo?

DONNA
Yeah.

JOSH
I'll take one.

DONNA
I'm on it.

Things that make me laugh.
-Absurdism (Python, The Bugle (which is why I knew John Oliver would be a hit), Comedy Bang Bang (and that whole genre of comedy), Good SNL
-Clever Word Play - Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello
-Smart Stand-up - Patton Oswalt, Louis CK, Pryor, Carlin
-Musical Humor - Weird Al, Jonathon Colton, Randy Newman
Things I know are funny but have a hard time watching because I squirm too much and need to leave the room.
-Seinfeld (mostly George), anything with Ben Stiller, Curb
Things that don't make me laugh much
-Pure gross out humor. Some is good, too much is too much.
-Gotcha humor, Prank shows, crank calls (most of the people on the other side don't deserve it, it is much funnier to laugh at ones self than others)
-Bad SNL (which is unwatchable), MadTV
