What's Ludwick's diagnosis for not being an everyday player anymore?

Just old?

cumberlandreds
08-08-2014, 01:18 PM
Reds need to go with the hot hitters right now. Ludwick has been hitting well lately and he should be in there.

NC-Red

taking 2/3 in this series is imperative to keep moving forward. Can't have a lapse against a team as bad as Florida

Ironman92
08-08-2014, 01:43 PM
I detest Schu getting a start after 3 consecutive games with good offensive production as he didn't play.

Skip was 1/3 off Eovaldi but his final two were whiffs.

No reason Luddy isn't playing.

I'm going tonight so hopefully Skip makes me look stupid because I want the Reds to win and don't really care how.

If Negron doesn't get 2 hits today Skip will be at 2nd tomorrow.

Why have the lineups been out early of late? Superstition by Price with good outcomes recently?

WVRedsFan
08-08-2014, 05:11 PM
I'll wait for the rotten tomatoes and eggs to be thrown, but I once thought Dusty's lineups were screwy, but these are just as bad or worse. At least he has Pena at first and Todd at third. When you replace Luddy for Schu or Heisey, you usually get nothing in return. Ludwick is not what he once was, but he is miles better than those two. And before you mention defense, Heisey has an attention problem sometimes and Schumaker is simply too slow to play the outfield. Ludwick seem to get to the balls--not pretty though. I hope Schu goes 4-4, and the Reds win. I just don't understand why Ludwick, who is hitting 40 points higher, has an OBP over .300, and seems healthy is being benched every other day for less productive players.

PepperJack
08-08-2014, 06:13 PM
What's Ludwick's diagnosis for not being an everyday player anymore?

Just old?

Even if he is fully healthy, the Reds have been giving him at least one out of every three games off since he got here really.

So there is very likely some hard truth to this.

PepperJack
08-08-2014, 06:15 PM
Reds need to go with the hot hitters right now. Ludwick has been hitting well lately and he should be in there.

Since Ludwick has been getting regular time off, even when he was going very good in 2012, there is a case to be made that he is only playing well right now, because he is getting regular rest to stay fresh, and able to perform.

Kc61
08-08-2014, 06:20 PM
As has been posted before, including in Pepper Jack's post directly above, Ludwick apparently cannot play every day.

Even in 2012, when he was healthy and critical to the team, Ludwick missed 38 games and had 472 PAs and 422 official ABs. These are less than the typical every day player would get.

Now, he's two years older and had a serious injury.

Price is obviously resting him because the club feels Ryan will do better with some rest.

This is a necessity. And in Schumaker's defense his lifetime OBP is .340 and I can understand playing him against certain righties because he has potential to get on track.

One thing that might have been done this season is to obtain a stronger lefty hitter to platoon with Ludwick for the rest of this season. Since they didn't, Skip is the left handed hitting alternative.

I can tell you I bet this is happening because he's starting to THINK about what he's doing, instead of just going. He'll get better, but I expect we're going to see some more of this as he works to become a better runner in the long run (no pun).

With the offense struggling and the bullpen very rested you can't have your pitcher lead off the 6th inning. You have to try to find some offense.

I'm willing to bet that Price has about 2, maybe 3 guys in that bullpen he trusts, and depending on availability, he likely thought it was too soon to go to them.

As for bringing in a pinch hitter, the options aren't overflowing there either right now. They're even thinner with already having to replace Pena.

He kind of has good stuff tonight. When Cueto, Latos, or Bailey dominate a team is it always the other team is a joke or do big league pitchers just sometimes dominate. He's throwing high 90's with movement and has one hell of a breaking ball tonight.

I know this offense has been frustrating this season but give this guy some credit he has been very good tonight.

Basically agreed.

Bunt or not, we were talking about a collection of terrible hitters. I probably wouldn't have bunted, but I get it, especially with a slow runner. Getting an extra opportunity to single wouldn't necessarily score Mes from 2nd either.

At the end of the day, the hitters sucked no matter what strategy implemented.

All Santiago had to do was pull the ball. The pitcher was not a K machine. A GB or long fly ball thats pulled is the same as the bunt with a chance to NOT give up an out. That was such an obvious decision blown its scary.

Cishek had nothing today. Even the ball Schumaker hit was hit hard. Santiago has a .324 OBP. Negron has been in the grove. Schumaker is a lefty. Without a bunt, a like the Reds chances there.

I don't hate a bunt there. I hate Schumacher ramming the first pitch into the ground when you need a fly ball (although we're overlooking how good of a play the Marlins SS made there). I hate Cozart hitting and not Ludwick, Heisey or Lutz.

I agree if someone I think scores on a single is running. I think it takes two hits. FanGraphs said the bunt lowered Reds chance to win by 2.4%. Redszone acting like it lowered chance to win by 83%.

Thats cool - I just ask bc percentages can be tricky. If it took their win % from 4.8% to 2.4% it essentially cut their chances to win in half. If it took it from 100% to 97.6% then it truly lowered it by 2.4%

Those are the two extremes but I bet its closer to the lower numbers than the higher numbers in this case.

If I had to guess it went from something like 35% to 33% but that is pure guessing.

As elated as I was to find the game in an obscure place in NC, and as disgusted as I was to see the game play out, the HOF ceremony was so special. I watched all of those guys play and it was a shock to see Jimmy O'Toole and others walking with a cane and see that they've aged--I'll always remember them as running the field and hitting or pitching the ball. Makes you realize that life is so short and enjoy it as it happens.

You've got to be flipping kidding me. schumaker's ball landed 2 feet in front of the plate and the second hop was 20 feet past the mound....SS had to go to his left and catch a short hop on his side.......and you say that was hit hard but you ripped on Heisey last night on a ball he hit much harder off of a guy that fanned 3 of the next 4 hitters.

Using one of the calculators available.
WE: man on second none out, down by 1: 42.3%
WE: man on third one out, down by 1: 40.4%

No, it's not a big difference, but you have to consider other factors such as: who is running, who's coming up to bat, what's the outlook for extra innings, etc.
And of course, the 1.9% loss in WE is only valid if the bunt is executed correctly and aside from an error or other misplay, it is the best possible outcome.
A failed bunt, for example, brings the WE down to 27.8%. The average success rate for a bunt is around 70%, but its probably higher in situations like this where the fielding team is likely to go to first with the throw.
So by attempting the bunt you are basically pretty much giving up WE, no matter what. It's a losing strategy.

Not a fan.

They both were hit equally hard. Both were dumb forest pitch swings, given the situation. Though I'm flattered you actually remembered something I said in a previous game thread. I say so many dumb things, I forget most of them ;)

Not a big fan of both of them hitting the 1st pitch....but Heisey's ball was fielded 20 feet deeper on 1 hop than Skip's was fielded after it's 2nd hop. Skip's ball hit the dirt 2 feet in front of the plate and took more than twice as long to get to the mitt of the SS even though it was closer.

Neither ball was overly hard hit. Sorry I'm being a butt munch.
