I'm not saying Lutz is any kind of long term solution to the problem, but I don't understand why he wasn't given a fair chance to fill in at 1B.

Making the All-Star Game was the worst thing that could have happened to Simon (from the Reds' perspective). Even hearing him talk after the selection (which was just because Cueto couldn't pitch) he was talking like he had arrived as a superstar. Maybe it's a coincidence, but it sure seems like mentally he's a completely different pitcher now. The AS selection gave him a false sense of security. He's now overconfident, which can be (is) a bad thing.

I agree. But Jay needs to score on that hit. A ground ball up the middle and you don't score from second? That's a fail on the runner's part.

Because, at the very least, you should be hauling arse at contact to make it to third because you know Billy is going home. Then when the ball makes it to the OF and you don't score, that's just bad baserunning (bad jump).

But yes, Smith should have noticed that and put up the stop sign.

I clearly can't aim for crap. So let's try the holy hand grenade of Antioch.

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."
King Arthur: Right. One... two... five.
Galahad: Three, sir.
