This is about as good of a way to start the discussion as any:

https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/report--louisville-coach-bobby-petrino-causing-friction-with-coaches--players-210233003.html

Kind of sounds to me like Grantham is still a jerk and that Petrino is toughening up his guys to make them better ready for primetime.

Not sure why yahoo errors on the side of implying something nefarious here because everything in that article was more predicable than the sun rising in the east.

Grantham is a jerk. Check.
Petrino is very demanding and is a perfectionist. Check.
Older players with allegiance to Strong and comfort with the previous way of doing things, don't like change. Check.

I hate UofL...check.

Seriously though, I don't see good things ahead of Bobby P and company and as a resident of the city I was very disappointed the university hired this joke again. It's like taking back the ex after they divorce you and have a few public relationships with others. It's not gonna end well.

Very excited for the season to begin. Thrilled to have Mr. 41-9 back. I expect it to be just like old times (if that includes the rumors of potential job-hopping, too, I can live with it if there's another 41-9 stretch).

Monday night in prime time at home against Miami is a helluva way to get things started.

DeVante Parker is only going to miss 6-8 weeks with his foot injury. If he's back for Clemson, crisis averted.

I get what you are saying and felt the same way when I heard about the hire. One big caveat, Tom Jurich. Pretty much everything thing this guy has done, with the exception of Kragthorpe, has been pure gold. I just can't bet against him.

I don't think he's playing tonight. If not, he should be back next week. Nothing serious.

Looks like Louisville bought their uniforms at the same place as UC.

When did Cardinals get teeth? That feels like an untruth.

Looks like a heckuva a team in Louisville. Might be the biggest testament to Charlie Strong. That's not just offensive juggernaut, like most Petrino squads, that's a fairly well-rounded team. Manhandled Miami. Al Golden does not look long for Coral Gables.

Nice halftime brawl and loss to UVA.

Playing an actual Division I schedule is hard.

Having UK on the schedule for years hasn't helped.

Having UK on the schedule for years hasn't helped.

Let's define our terms here. Brooks did fairly well and left Joker a viable program which he then promptly trashed.

Obviously much of UK's history since the late 70s has been fairly ignominious.

Couldn't be happier with the present direction of the program.

5-1, 3-1 halfway through. Not particularly pretty last night, but trashing a team 28-6 on the road is always nice. The meat of the season starts next week in Death Valley.

Every team from here on is better than any of the 5 teams they've beaten. I could see them losing all 6 just as easy as going 3-3 (no way they win more than 3). The offensive line is brutal. Unfortunately devante parker doesn't play tackle.

I keep expecting petrino to work his magic but between the line and lack of qb experience I'm not sure that there is anything to be done other than hope for improvement.

3-3 wouldn't surprise me, but I think the Cards get one of Clemson, FSU or ND. Of the three, Clemson is probably the most likely.

I agree but think they'll also drop one of the other three games. Maybe BC on the road.

Boston Red

BC is awful, but that definitely does not preclude Louisville from losing to them on the road.

IslandRed
10-06-2014, 07:45 PM
BC's not great by any means, but a team that can rush for 450 yards while beating USC isn't awful. A one-trick pony kind of team, though. Since Louisville has been pretty stout at stopping the run so far, you might have an easier time with them than most.

Boston Red

BC got thumped at home by a bad Pitt team and lost to Colorado State at home. They are not good. The USC game was definitely an anomoly. It's not as though USC is all that great, either.

"Not good" and "bad" aren't the same thing. By that definition 75-80% of college football is bad. If you're bad or awful, you're going to lose nearly all the time. Win some, lose some, in the same ballpark as most of your competition? That means you're average or mediocre. That's what Boston College is. Bad is what Wake Forest is.

Boston Red

I wouldn't be even a little bit surprised if BC loses at WF in two weeks.

IslandRed

Really? I would. Wake Forest has some scrappy guys on D, but they basically can't play offense.

The quarterback play is brutal. It's reached the point where I root for a punt because I feel our defense has a better chance of scoring.

Have to wonder how different this season would be if Parker had not been injured.

Of course, they probably would have been in the national championship game had Michael Bush not been injured in 2006.

Injuries happen.

Boston Red
10-19-2014, 09:20 AM
Probably not that different. DeVante had a big game yesterday, and the Cards struggled like crazy to beat a horrible NC State team. Offensive line and QB play are just so bad.

This season could go either way from here. They could go 4-0 (I'm not that impressed by either FSU or ND, and Winston could certainly find himself suspended in the next 11 days) or 0-4. The only game it would really be a surprise to lose is Kentucky, and even that wouldn't be a huge surprise at this point.

BoxingRed
10-19-2014, 12:37 PM
Louisville comes down to 1 yard and 1 play to beat Clemson at Clemson where Clemson pretty much never loses and you don't think DeVante makes a difference in their season?

I am not surprised they weren't totally "up" for the NCST game with FSU looming.

You have pretty high expectations of this team if you ho-hum at the thought of them beating both Notre Dame and FSU. I am guessing you are an Alabama fan?

I agree that the offense is not a lot of fun to watch, but the defense is pretty much stupendous.

Boston Red
10-19-2014, 12:48 PM
Who's ho humming the idea of beating FSU and ND? It's entirely possible, but certainly not expected. I'm pretty sure I said there's just as good a chance of going 0-4. How many Alabama fans do you think "ho-hum" the idea of losing to friggin Kentucky?!?

I'm thrilled to have DeVante back, but he was back and in rare form yesterday, and the team still had the same problems with NC State. If DeVante was a QB or an offensive lineman, I'd be more excited about his impact on the season.

Agree with this. The offense looks great when throwing to devante but otherwise you have receivers running bad routes and a qb who can't hit his targets.

But DeVante Parker played like his draft stock was on the line. He was awesome.

I think the defense can keep us in the game against anyone but worry that turnovers and special teams points will be the difference, like Clemson.

Seemed to me that you were saying it wouldn't be a big deal if they went 4-0 the rest of the way. Maybe I mis-read.

I think, as Louisville fans with familiarity with Petrino coached teams, we are used to great offenses. This just isn't one of those teams. Doesn't mean they're not good overall.

Add to that, the team had, perhaps, its best QB in team history graduate last season and I think expectations of the offense could be tempered a bit.

Can't deny the defense is something special.

If they go 4-0 the rest of the way, I'll be more than pleased.

Right. All that tacky crap on the walls, mediocre-at-best seafood. I can't believe there are Joe's Crab Shacks still operating.

Totally bizarre. Kyle Bolin might be the clubhouse leader to start for the Cards in '15. Certainly wouldn't have thought that coming into the day.

They didn't play against the UK pass defense either. Bolin played great but I've never heard any indication that he'll ever compete for a starting job. Most likely, next year's starter won't be any of the three.

Boston Red
11-29-2014, 10:21 PM
Kentucky ' s defense isn't worse than ND's. Fair point that it could be one of the transfers or a freshman starting next year, but Bolin looked better to me throwing the football than Gardner or Reggie did at any point all year.

Also, I assume we'll get another extensive look at Bolin in the bowl game.
