Oh they are facing Chris Tillman, RHP
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_09_04_cinmlb_balmlb_1
11-5, 3.36 ERA

Tillman only allowed one run in a win against the Twins on Saturday, but he only lasted five innings for his third non-quality starts in 16 outings. During that stretch, the starting pitcher is 6-3 with a 2.13 ERA.

As they're struggling at the plate, the Reds will have a tall order when they face Baltimore's starter for the series finale. Chris Tillman has been sensational since the All-Star break, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.85 ERA in nine second-half starts. The right-hander was 7-5 with a 4.11 ERA before the break.

Tillman has also been fantastic at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, where his 2.50 ERA this season would be the best single-season mark by an Orioles pitcher in the history of the ballpark.

Reds counter with Mike Leake.

Is this Price trying to send a message?

If so, what is the message? As he has said all year (including last night) that the effort was never in question. Just the results.

BALTIMORE — Bryan Price wasn't kidding on Wednesday night when he said he was going to give a chance for some other players to play.

After losing 6-0 and managing just four hits against Miguel Gonzalez, Price said:

"I do think we've got to this point where we've got some guys up here that we need to take a look at. We need to see what they're all about. We're not doing anything at all, offensively. It makes it a lot easier to start to see what we have in our system, to see what we have moving forward."

I really can't blame him for holding out hope for as long as possible. I am sure he knew earlier than last night. Part of me still thinks a 10-game win streak gets them back in it. But most of me knows that isn't going to happen.

Also, as a first year manager, he wants to finish the season with the best record possible. No one wants to start off their career with a 75 win season.

Manny's earning a couple mill so you gotta keep him, plus I think he still can be effective in the right spots, but otherwise completely agree. Chapman should be the only one on the team right now guaranteed a spot in next year's pen, everyone else has to earn it and they should move on from several guys (LeCure, Hoover, Ondrusek) entirely.

He's NEVER had high velocity. But other than this season he's also always had success. Changing speeds, pin point control...velocity isn't the end-all, be-all.

Not trying to excuse his season at all. He's been bad. Not Hoover-bad, so even putting him in the same sentence is borderline criminal. :O) But he's not somebody I'd cut loose yet. Moving him down the bullpen pecking order, sure. Dumping him, no thanks.

Based on your opinion. What's changed about Sam? I've seen some of you say "his arm is toast" and such. He's throwing with the same velocity as he was last year, 2 years ago and 3 years ago. IMO his problem is his control is nowhere close to what it was prior to this year. Too many of his pitches are staying in the hitting zone. His walks are about the same, his K's are down a bit...it's his hits allowed that have skyrocketed.

You guys may very well be right and that his days as an effective pitcher are done. But too many times have I seen a player have ONE poor year and come right back to where they were before.

Btw, sorry about that comment. As soon as I typed it I knew it sounded rude.

He's always thrown about 88 on his FB. And he's got good movement on it...yes, STILL. But before this year, it would start in the zone and break OUT of the zone. Now it's starting in the zone and breaking to a still hittable area. It could be nothing more than a mechanical tweek we're talking about.

Let me put it this way. We've got several guys in the pen who have a history of bad track records but who've done well in short stints. Logan, Hoover, Parra come to mind. LeCure is not in that group. He's had a history of excellence...this season is his first bad stretch at all. And let's put it in perspective too... 3.69 era, 40 k's, 18 bb. Those are average reliever numbers. Not POOR reliever numbers. He's gone from excellent to average for the first time. He's not as bad as many are remembering. Babip is something that I don't put much stock in but this season he's taken a BIG jump in that too. Since 2010, he's gone .308, .241, .297, .297 and this year .348. One of those things are not like the others.

Considering how much leeway many of the other guys have gotten over the years, I think we can give LeCure a mulligan on this season....same as Bruce.

Not sure who's gotten "leeway" and I'm not about to give "mulligans" to anyone after this miserable year. We don't have any choice with Bruce, what can we do except hope for the best? We sure can't trade him off this season.

But even with the injuries and the offensive woes, this team could have still been halfway competitive if the veterans in the bullpen had stepped up and done their jobs. Changes have to be made. I really have seen enough of LeCure and Hoover to last a lifetime.

And i can't believe I'm sitting here arguing about Sam friggin LeCure on yet another night when he failed to get his job done.
