I don't like the looks of this lineup. Heisey AND Luddy? No Billy....Frazier only had one AB last night? What's going on? I hope this isn't what it looks like.

Say it ain't so, Joe.

I assume hasn't been cleared due to his concussion the other night. Luddy and Heisey is probably due to Liriano. I assume Bruce is 4 for 50 in his career vs Liriano and is being given the rest because of that.

Edit: I was wrong Jay is 0 for 16 vs Liriano while Heisey is 5 for 12 and Luddy 5 for 15.

This time, he'll see a Cincinnati team that's hardly at full strength. Out since July 5, Joey Votto has been taking batting practice but isn't likely to play this weekend. Billy Hamilton isn't expected to play in this series due to a concussion, and Devin Mesoraco missed Friday's game with sore ribs but could return Saturday.

Price even reached out to Mathey to explain his lineups:
http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/

*Via the teams’ media relations departments, Price reached out through channels to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny to explain why many of his regulars weren’t playing vs. the Pirates — including closer Aroldis Chapman, who also couldn’t pitch Friday with a stiff shoulder. St. Louis is trying to hold off Pittsburgh for the NL Central title.

“I felt it was fair that they understood that. We’re not going ‘hey we’re taking a look at our younger guys’. There are guys that cannot play or will not play or are limited in their ability,” Price said. “That was just three players. There are others on there that can’t play but I wasn’t going to announce to Major League Baseball who is an active player on our roster and who isn’t. I felt like it was the right thing to do simply because I think we’ve really honored this September. We utilized the Baltimore and Chicago series to play more of the younger guys. In the other series, I feel like we’ve played it as straight-up as we possibly can and tried to put the best team on the field based on the matchups and based on who was healthy enough to play. I did want them to know that we’re not trying to just play out the season and take a look at our younger players. We’re trying to put the best team on the field with what we have to choose from.”

Mez thrown out at home. Looked safe to me. Nice slide by Mez though going headfirst into the plate is never the wisest move.

Yeah don't like to see that for his health but as the announcers point out, he didn't really have a path to go any other way besides the old end-around.

Little excitement for Reds fans during the past few weeks, but Chapman brings a roar from the crowd after k'ing McCutchen on 3 pitches.

Considering Axford was terrible for everybody else before the Pirates and it's only been 12 games for him in Pittsburgh, I don't think Axford would have made a lick of difference.

He was very good for the Cards down the stretch last year, and good with the Indians before one terrible appearance, after which they sent him to the Pirates, where he's been good again. He was terrible today, though.

I can't believe that Hurdle put a 28 year old rookie in that situation with the season on the line.

Wow! What a win! On of the most unlikely Grand Slams you will ever see. That probably put the Pirates in the wild card game. Reds finally win a game that they have to score more than six runs.

Did he have a lot of options? He obviously didn't like what he saw from Axford. Plus he has to manage with an eye on next week. I'm sure a few of his pitchers are tired.

#Reds Pryce said RHP Simon has calf strain and could do little more than throw the ball -- no covering first base, no fielding.

The Reds snapped a club-record streak of 45 consecutive losses when they allowed at least six runs in a game. Their bullpen got its first win since the All-Star break -- Reds relievers are 1-17 over that span.

The Reds are 24-42 since the All-Star break. They'll at least tie the club record for fewest wins since the All-Star Game. The 1933 team won 25 for the previous mark.

I can't believe that walkoff. Wonderful, but it's a wonder we win when the Pirates lineup had OBP's of .349, .339, .410, .341, .357, .345, .308, and .326 while the Reds were .320, .306, .337. .360, .268, .308, .276, .343. This team cannot hit or walk. Thanks to Liriano they did today, but only on 9 hits. Gotta get Johnny that 20th tomorrow. I'm anxious to see who he plays in the lineup. No saving players now. Time to put your best hitters in and that includes Santiago, Mesorocco, and Frazier all in at the same time. Odds are we will won't see that.

I imagine Frazier is playing for sure tomorrow, and Price said he wanted Mesoraco to catch Cueto on Sunday, as long as his pulled rib muscle came out of today okay.

I don't know whether Santiago will play or not, he may have used up all his lucky dust today though.

Yep, Price just wanted to make sure that Mesoraco came out of today okay.

I guess if he didn't, it would have been Barnhart again.

Well Pena is hurt and is supposedly only available as a PH. Article today already said Mesoraco is catching tomorrow. That's the good news I was wanting to hear. I'll be honest and tell everyone that I pretty much quit following the Reds after that disastrous double header against I think SD (?). It was too frustrating to watch every inning and follow the news, I did watch parts of games and when i got frustrated, I'd do something else. As a life-long fan, that's a tough thing to do, but this season was simply horrible and the fact that no changes were made when it woefully obvious to every baseball fan that something needed to be done with such a dysfunctional offense. I feel for the starting pitchers who gave all in compiling sterling ERA's and got no wins. It's hard to believe that Johnny Cueto has nine losses.

In Johnny's nine losses, there were 3 losses by 1 run, and the Reds averaged scoring 1.4 runs for him. Johnny averaged giving up 2.9. When Johnny pitched, the Reds were shutout six times. Good pitching wasted just because you don't make moves at the front office and field level. I imagine the other starters have similar tales to tell. Short, left, and right need to be evaluated offensively. Let's see if they do.

That nightmare doubleheader was against Colorado, and I think that's when I knew the season was over too.
