Rams owner Stan Kroenke, who bought 60 acres adjacent to the Forum a year ago, has joined forces with the owners of the 238-acre Hollywood Park site, Stockbridge Capital Group. They plan to add an 80,000-seat NFL stadium and 6,000-seat performance venue to the already-massive development of retail, office, hotel and residential space, Stockbridge and the Kroenke Group told The Times.
The announcement is the latest in more than a dozen stadium proposals that have come and gone in the meandering, two-decade effort to bring an NFL franchise back to the nation's second-largest media market. But Kroenke's move marks the first time an existing team owner has controlled a local site large enough for a stadium and parking.
Nothing against St. Louis, but the Rams never should have left Los Angeles in the first place.

^ I agree. I still call them the Los Angeles Rams. Its really unbelievable that all these years have past and no NFL team in the 2nd biggest city in the country.

True.
But St. Louis never should have been hosed by Bill Bidwell in '88, either.

The NFL might want another team there but I don't know if the citizens can support one. I remember when the Raiders moved there and they were good back then. Watch a game on TV, and it was like the stadium was half full.

I am unconvinced of LA's ability to support an NFL franchise long term.
Maybe things have changed since the 90's though.

Amazing to think Bidwell has overseen the Cardinals move from Chicago to St. Louis to Phoenix.

The Raiders played in a college stadium, I believe 100K+. NFL teams don't draw that many people and look empty when they aren't sold out. Imagine what Ohio Stadium would look like if a NFL team played there.

I thought it was the same place the Rams played? Been so long ago.......the LA Coliseum? But anyways, there is a reason the Rams and Raiders left. It is kind of a "posh" crowd out there. I don't think they root for their team as much as they look at it as a social event.

The Rams did play at the L.A. Coliseum, but moved to Anaheim in 1980. That's why the Raiders then moved to L.A. to play in the Coliseum.

I have always heard that most out there consider USC is their pro team.

Sounds like it could be happening whether the NFL likes it or not, similar to Al Davis moving the Raiders to L.A.

Los Angeles is full of lemmings. Win and they show up. Lose and they're no-shows. At least it isn't Atlanta where when you win, there still aren't fans. Los Angeles is also a good travel destination where there would be a lot of fans showing up for the visiting teams by the thousands. So, together, all of those factors should still average 40,000 per game in a 55,000 seat stadium over a decade of time. Suites are lucrative money-makers in L.A., where the revenue from them would more than make up for the other 15,000. Then there's the huge market for clothing, etc., where a lot of money would be made.

Refresh my memory Tom. Was the reason that Davis moved the Raiders to LA due to his unhappiness with the Oakland Coliseum?

Obviously not Tom, but yes, it was mostly about lack of Luxury boxes -- also, a huge reason that Irsay moved the Colts to Indy.

So Davis was playing a game of poker with Oakland?

He tried to move the team in '81, but a Court injunction stopped them. Once an antitrust ruling went the Raiders way in the Spring of '82, they were off to LA.

And how about the move back to Oakland?

Yeah the luxury boxes were the main reason, plus he suddenly had the opportunity to move to a city, still in-state, that was massively bigger than Oakland.
And how about the move back to Oakland?
He found the same pitfalls in the LA Coliseum as the Rams had and couldn't get the support for a new stadium in the area, so he said "screw it" and bolted back to Oakland where Oakland paid $220 million on stadium renovations.

Bad idea.
That does seem big. If they could get something where you could add seating for events like the Super Bowl and the National Championship game, but have it closer to 60k for NFL games that would make more sense.
I've lived in LA for about 9 years now and I honestly have no idea how and NFL team would do. I think it would do well, but if the team isn't good there isn't any way they will fill a 60k or 80k stadium. I think an expansion team would do better than just bringing the Rams back.

I'm sure the NFL is drooling at the possibility of a team back in their second biggest market. I don't know about the NCAA Championship game since the Rose Bowl is still around but definitely Super Bowls.
One of the drawbacks is not filling that stadium. If they don't sell out, that means the game will be blacked out of the L.A. market. Not good. The Rams do seem like a good fit in L.A. with Arizona, SEA and SF.

Well in that article Tom put up there a few posts back it said that if the owner of the Rams doesn't get permission from 24 other owners he was gonna move anyway. There would be reprecussions to this, and one of them would be the stadium couldn't host any Super Bowls.
