So in the coming week if you're watching ESPN Sportscenter and they start to give Atlantic Sun Tourney results, pause a moment before you change the channel. Locally here in Jacksonville, we have 2 D1 teams that are kind of similar to University of Dayton and Wright State in Dayton. UD is a private school that played for the NCAA Championship in 1967 against UCLA. Wright State is the newcomer public school.
In Jacksonville we have Jacksonville University a small private school that played UCLA for the Championship in 1970. University of North Florida is the upstart public school. JU hasn't been back to the NCAA in 29 years. North Florida has had a dismal record in basketball over the years. in 22 years UNF has had only 2 winnings seasons. And those two years were 15-13 and 15-14. The last winning season was 12 years ago. They went D1 in 2005 and started out by going 6-22, 3-26, and 3-26.
But this year UNF is 20-11 has just clinched the Atlantic Sun Regular Season Conference Championship which means they have an invite to the NIT, and home court advantage throughout the Conference Tourney. If they win they get their first invite to the NCAA tourney (where they'll be sent to the play-in game I'm sure).
So, if next Sunday you see the brackets released and you see UNF, you won't have to say who the hell are they. You can say "hey...they did it".
