It's not too late to make a change, Bryan.

He has nothing.....can maybe pitch to guys that try to kill everything but I haven't any expectations for him.

I'll be surprised if he's still a Reds player on June 1st

Is the team hitting this spring?

Scenario-

Let's say Marquis keeps this up and exits camp with an ERA of 5.50-6.00.

How does Price justify keeping him in the rotation?

But I thought Votto swinging at pitches out of the zone would make him better!

Curious you thought those strikes were out of the zone? He should have hit the 3-1 pitch, just missed it.

3-1 was a strike.

I thought 3-2 was a ball. I could have been wrong though, I only saw it once.

Yeah, Kevin, you were right. 3-2 was right on the edge of the zone. Nasty.

That'd be swell.

I think it's a little high, considering his HR/FB spike last year. I think he'll be 20-25. Though 30 is entirely possible.

Billy had 3rd but Joey was late on a 2-1 fastball (likely because of Billy taking his focus a bit)

Would've liked Billy on 3rd with no outs

I wonder if Votto likes hitting behind Billy.

Votto has said that the only times when he feels the effects of lineup protection are when Billy is on first.

But, it does seem like he gets distracted by him.

I'm going to say he does not. Seemed like when Billy was on second that it took some of his focus off the ball a bit....both when he ran and even when he didn't. BHam had insane jumps in stealing 2nd and also his attempt for 3rd Joey negated.

Well, I guess that's one relative positive about Billy never being on base.

Considering how volatile relievers are I'd say it's somewhat of a concern. Especially considering relievers who throw a bunch of innings a few years in a row can hit a wall fast.

The question becomes if it continues into April how long do you continue to pitch him?

In his first couple of outings, he looked decent- got a lot of groundballs. Just bad defense or poor luck.

Can't say the same about tonight.

But, I still think he'll be a solid mid 3's ERA guy for us.

If Lorenzen makes the team as a reliever someone is going to have to go. Could be surprising.

Chapman, Cingrani, Parra, LeCure, Diaz, Gregg and Lorenzen/Badenhop. I don't know if the Reds carry more than that. Not sure what is going to happen. But, if Lorenzen makes it, and Price likes Gregg as much as it seems, someone is going home.

Gotta wonder what the Gregg love is about. He's been awful for years outside of a half of a season in 2013.

If our manager/GM make that kind of decision based on a sample of 3 Spring Innings...yikes.

Lorenzen is starting Thursday's game. The impression I get from Price's comments is that Lorenzen will be starting at AAA to begin the season.

He didn't use those words, he said that Lorenzen and Moscot could potentially be next in line to start. Price did not preclude Lorenzen from making the team.

But I sense they are ditching the Lorenzen as reliever idea for now and he will be getting ready at AAA to be a starter.

I think the post above has the pen correct, just eliminate Lorenzen. If he's healthy, I think Badenhop will go north with the club and see how he does. Some guys take awhile to get ready.

I was thinking you could see the phantom DL trip to give the Reds some time to figure things out. Not sure it would be Badenhop, but I could see someone getting one to buy time.

All I know is this. If things continue like this over the next 10 days or so, I don't want Badenhop pitching in high leverage situations. Maybe you could hide him in the back of the bullpen while he works through it.

From Price's comments, it doesn't sound like he wants to use Badenhop in those situations anyway.

When Fay asked him about who his setup man would be, he mentioned Gregg (sigh), Hoover (double sigh), and Jumbo. No mention of Burke.

Badenhop was awful. LeCure looks/acts disinterested. Saved by a diving catch by Hamilton. Incliude Hoover in the mix and you have an absolute middle relief disaster waiting to happen.

Let's see how Lecure does. I'm not sure he has the stuff anymore. Certainly coming off an "off-season."

I think Badenhop is going to be used in double play situations. Hopefully as he gets some more work his ground ball tendencies will show up.

Badenhop, who has been good in the past, looks like he needs to go to AAA or AA after this spring. He's Hoover Lite so far. 24.00+ ERA. Good grief. Another tie. Marquis sharp. Same old story. Bullpen kills us. Welcome to 2014.

Badenhop's performance has been a little concerning for me. I normally pay zero attention to spring stats but last night almost all of his pitches were belly high just waiting to be crushed. Looks to me like he's not finishing his pitches off that makes him so effective at getting ground balls. And when he tried to hit the outside corner he was erratic and almost throwing to the backstop. Hopefully it's just something mechanical that will be ironed out by Opening Day.

That's what it looks like to me. But most sinkerbsll pitchers take awhile to in the spring to get their arm tired enough to get that sink on their pitches. I'd be worried with Badenhop if this was his last appearance before the season started. I'm not worried at this point.

Tom Servo

Not worried about Badenhop. Never like to see a guy get rocked in spring training but Badenhop has a track record of success. Much more worried about JJ Hoover and to a lesser extent Manny Parra.

Although it'd make Price actually putting him in the rotation look even sillier if he does do that bad though.

If Badenhop ends up getting cut, and Hoover/Gregg is still around...that's bad.

If Gregg is healthy, I take him over Hoover, LeCure, or Badenhop. The Reds don't need 3 of the same thing: middle relievers who throw mid 80s fastballs. The game has changed. Virtually every team has players, young or old, on their way up or down, with power arms filling the middle relief jobs. It's time for the Reds to do the same. We're looking at last year's bullpen disaster all over again if changes aren't made. "This has been a public service announcement. The opinions stated above are those of the poster and probably not of any other readers." :)

Tom Servo
03-24-2015, 02:39 PM
Hoover is a power arm, not sure where you get the idea he's a mid 80s fastball guy from.
