Travis Wood, being a lefty, the Reds hit Bruce sixth and righties Phillips and Byrd fourth and fifth.

I'm not surprised BP has hit well so far at cleanup. He rises to the occasion in this type of situation. Years ago they decided he should hit lead-off and he got hot. Cooled down thereafter.

Don't be shocked if BP continues to hit cleanup when Mes comes back. For awhile. Fine with me, I don't think it makes a huge difference in this case, and Mes may like hitting a bit lower down.

BP might have 'heated up' but a lot of it has been bloop type hits. Still 0 extra base hits on the season. It is nice to see him getting more hits but there is still no way he's a cleanup hitter or anywhere above 6. Still only a .623 OPS.

Of course that is with Rocco back. Can't really say he deserves to hit any lower than Byrd, and for whatever reason they don't want to move Bruce up. I don't really have an issue with BP 4th with Rocco out since they seem to refuse to bat Bruce there, but man does it make the lineup look weak.

Not sure about "bloop type hits." I've seen a lot of line drives, and not all of them have fallen. BP's seeing the ball well right now.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of BP cleaning up. He's hitting well, sure, but I doubt there are many pitchers that feel intimidated or challenged with him in the batters box. Hopefully Rocco will have earned his way back in the 4 spot before May.

I don't care for Phillips in that slot either, but he's scalded some balls too. Got robbed of several as well. Regardless of where he's hitting...he's swinging a solid bat right now. I'm not going to complain.

He was robbed of a couple hits on Opening Day....he has hit several balls hard. He's doing fine for now and complaining is silly especially while Meso was struggling.

I don't like him batting there either and feel he'll struggle against the better teams but complaining now is a bit silly..

I heard Walt this off-season say the Reds were looking for some low risk pitchers to fill in open spots.

Axelrod has been mostly a minor leaguer. He has thrown 208 minor league games, 708 innings.

In the majors, he has thrown 53 games, 216 innings, 9-14, 5.16 ERA, 5.13 FIP.

Pitchers turn corners - Axelrod reminds me of a younger Marquis - that is a guy who could be league average. I'm looking at last year and so far this year. I really don't care what he did before that. Cheaper than Marquis - and likely to give you just as good result

Last year? Dylan pitched in the majors briefly. Nice 2.95 ERA. Not so nice 5.15 FIP.

Small, anecdotal sample, which doesn't hold up when you look more closely.

No substitute for devoting a few dollars to a man who will start ballgames every fifth day. Important spot.

I'm not arguing they should not have gone out and gotten someone better, I'm just saying with what they have now that they blew that decision, I'd take Axelrod over Marquis

Some of us said it all winter.
He made 3 starts.

8/17 @ Colorado - 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 BB, 7 K, 2 ER
8/28 vs Chicago - 5 innings, 2 hits, 3 BB, 8 K, 0 ER
9/3 @ Baltimore - 6 innings, 5 hits, 0 BB, 4 K, 4 ER

HR ball hurt him, but he was alright.

The answer was to go out and get a good one-year stop gap starter this off-season. Pay a few dollars. That was the answer.
Or possibly not to have created a hole in the rotation in the first place.

Not referring to the Latos trade, of course.

The thing that's really frustrating is that the Reds are spending a combined $7 million on Byrd, Gregg, and Marquis. Cubs are paying Fowler $9.5 million this year. We couldn't afford to trade for Fowler? Couldn't make up that $2.5 mil? What is Jocketty thinking?

Crazy thing is that Marquis has swing and miss stuff. I can see why Price liked him in spring training. His off speed stuff has a ton of movement. He just can't control it enough to avoid throwing fastballs for strikes. To be fair, if Marquis can control his off speed stuff, he could be a decent 5th starter.

They would have been required to trade for Fowler, so somebody would have gone to the Astros. I believe Fowler was a trade, not a FA.

But the point is the Reds wanted OBP and traded for power. They went for Byrd who happened to cost them only $4 million this season.

Virtually the whole off-season was about cutting payroll and preparing for the future IMO.

Which is ok, but IMO they are now half in and half out. Never a great situation.

Maybe they will catch fire and make it interesting, overall they have played all right and the one-run games are going better.

Fowler was a trade. IIRC the Cubs didn't give up very much for him, though, and the Reds definitely could have nabbed him. My thought at the time was that difference between Byrd's $4m and Fowler's arb-eligible $8m was the difference. Which, fair enough. ~$5m is substantial. But if that was the case why dump $3m on Gregg and Marquis, who are essentially replacement-level at this point. Might as well have gone with Holmberg in that role if that was the plan.

Over 6 WAR from 2010-2012 without a large amount of innings compared to other relievers. (Just saying his WAR isn't bulked up by IP) I know pitcher WAR isn't the most popular thing, but that is great production. Few relievers match that production.

Marshall not so much.Marshall blew one save in 2012 in his brief tenure as closer. One. He appeared in 73 games, threw 61 innings, had an almost 11.0 K rate, and a +165 ERA. That is better than decent.

Marshall was absolutely a great reliever. If you're not an elite closer, you can't be an elite reliever? That logic is false. Marshall's peak maybe wasn't all that long, but in 2012 he was nails for us. Fate intervened. It happens. I'm not sweating losing Travis Wood and the midget hitter whose name I can't remember that everyone was in love with.

Dave Sappelt! That was his name. And he was awful.

Good work by Villarreal, still don't think anything of him but good job soaking up a few frames.

Marshall was so great as a closer that he lasted until the Yankee series in June. At that point Dusty, who hated to make a change , and hated to go with a rookie over a veteran, knew he couldn't close and had to try something different.

Dave Sappelt the Kirby Puckett who wasn't, and Ronald Torreyes. 2 midgets and an undersized lefty for Marshall. I think the Reds gave them players based on height for height. Took those 3 to stacked on top of each other to equal Marshall.

This game is really really bad. Been nice to have had a crystal ball and could've rested Votto.

The Skip vs a lefty was a special moment.

Marshall was outstanding against lefties, good against righties. He did better as a set up man than closer. High caliber reliever.

Villarreal did just what they wanted, ate a couple of mop up innings. Probably will be back in Louisville soon, but not for sure.

Reds offense deceptively seems ok, but will have an OBP problem this season. Of course, given the state of offense, so will a number of other teams. They haven't scored since inning one yesterday.

As an aside am I the only one who feels like Chapman has been closing for the last 5+ seasons? Hard to believe the Madson debacle was just 3 years ago.

Don't bring up Madson. He doesn't get hurt, its him and Marshall 8th and 9th inning and Chapman becomes a starter....fate...ugh

Cubs fans make me LOL. They haven't won a World Series in 106 years and They're 28-60 against The Reds over the last five years.

You'd think they were the 1927 Yankees because of a few games.

Actually I was wrong. Marshall's stint as a closer lasted until 5/19/12 when he gave up 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning in Yankee Stadium and was replaced by Jose Arredondo. I don't think Marshall ever closed another game. Chapman became the closer the next day.

He was dreadful the second half of 2014. And he's been bad for most of his career, especially as a starter. I've been super critical of Walt lately, but jettisoning Simon was the right call. I would've done it even sooner if I were him, prior to the trade deadline last year.

Simon is vastly underrated on this site. He suffers in some stats because he doesn't have a high K rate. But his low walk rate and ground ball tendencies are effective behind a good defensive infield.

The Reds would be a better team if Simon had been retained. They needed to make these trades to reduce payroll. But the Simon trade did not improve the 2015 team.

Simon suffered in the second half last year due to all the innings. He had been a reliever for a few years. This year, I don't think he'll suffer quite the decline.

Not a TOR starter, but a solid three-four man, Tigers will be helped by him.

Chapman wasn't a "rookie" when he took over for Marshall. He was in his third season.

I think the criteria used was "great". Know any set up men in the HOF? "Great" set up men (ie Chapman, Mariano) become closers.

They would have had a chance. Jocketty cut the legs off this team with that trade, IMO. All for the 5.5 million that he subsequently dealt out to Gregg, et al.

The Reds would be a better team with Simon until Phillips or Cozart goes down and the Reds have some middle infield depth that they absolutely didn't have before.

The 2015 Cincinnati Reds season will not be determined by a lack of Big Pasta.

For the record. The Reds are 1-1 in games started by Marquis this season. I'm not sure the team would have done any better with any of the names mentioned as his replacement.

He's actually been better than I expected.

Beats arguing about whether Price bunts too much or whether Chapman should be used before the ninth inning. Have to argue about something and those topics have been pretty exhausted.

Wow not a great read at work on a Thursday morning. Offence just didn't show up and when Marquis is pitching that can't afford to happen.

Move on to tomorrow now.

FWIW I love Alfredo Simon.

Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY.

We can complain all we want, but mark it down, Jason Marquis will be in this rotation until at least June. And it's decisions like this one, Gregg, Parra, etc. that keep this team from being a very very good team. I used to think Dusty was the only one that cared about hurting feelings more than making decisions to improve the club. Now it looks like it's the theme of the organization. Especially based on what Price said the other day about it would hurt a guy's confidence if he pulled them out of their current bullpen roles.

One thing that I did like about LaRussa and the Cardinals; if a guy didn't perform, they moved on to the next guy until they found someone who did.
