Not a good idea to move Cozart to 2 spot and Votto to 3 IMO
Why mess with 2 hot guys' position in the order?
However, looking at the options in the rest of the lineup, don't know how else it could be structured.

Don't think Frazier has been given a day off yet so I'm fine with that but I really would keep Hamilton in front of Votto at all cost. Just bump everyone up a spot behind them.

Pitchers are definitely distracted when Hamilton is on and the last hitter you should give less than your full attention is Votto. Hopefully it is just for today.

This is the Dusty Baker tribute lineup.

1. CF
2. SS
3. Votto

And, most importantly, the catcher bats 8th.

Over the past 2 years, Frazier is 3 for 24 against Lohse with an OPS of .287. That may factor into why he has the day off.

Byrd was 2 for 6 against him last year.

Lohse has given up 18 runs in 15 2/3 innings so far this year. Hope this trend continues.

If you're gonna give guys a day off, pretty good day to do it. Weekend series with the Cubs coming up.

Well they are running a lineup with 6 of the 9 guys having an OPS under .600, so you might as well clump the only 2 guys hitting the ball together.

Kc61
04-23-2015, 02:26 PM
Zack really is a poor choice to hit second IMO.

The reason is that his contact rate is high. Unfortunately he makes a lot of weak contact. Off balance pop ups and grounders. Double play candidate hitting second.

If I had to stick someone in hitting second, I'd almost rather use Byrd.

Byrd swings and misses, and maybe Billy steals second and maybe he steals third.

Not that Byrd is a second place hitter but I think Zack is not a very good choice.

Very well said. I would have stuck Negron in there just to keep everyone else (Votto, Cozart) comfortable in their regular spots in the lineup.

Also: No one is doubling up Negron.

I'd have no problem with Negron, you're right about his foot speed being an advantage.

It's very hard to win four on the road, and Lohse has always been capable of great performances.

Today, Reds will need to get lucky. Maybe somebody hits a two-run shot, or the Brew Crew make an error or two.

With how streaky he is, would you rather Bruce no longer have highs and lows and just hit for his average the entire year, or would you rather he continue to have huge highs and terrible lows that averages out in the end? My brain says have him hit for average the entire year, but my heart says the streaks are a heck of a lot of fun to watch when he's hot.

It's like there's a mental block with our pitchers. It can't be like this around baseball, can it? Almost every time the Reds take a one-run lead, they give it right back up the following inning (or the bottom half of the inning).
That was especially the pattern for Homer last year

OldXOhio

Here's a question.

I'll let you know when I see these huge highs again....it's been a while.

Stats are stats so I don't know which is more valuable in the end. Someone else will have to answer if Jay Bruce's upswings outweigh what he costs the team when he goes into his month long funks.

Debatable move to try and steal with Hamilton there.

One reason to run -- Brewers would not have walked Votto deep in the count with two strikes. If steal successful Joey would get a chance to hit.

Reasons not to run -- As the go ahead run, Billy has a decent shot at scoring from first on a Votto hit. Joey hits so many gappers.
Also, deep in the count Joey has a fair shot at walking. Which moves Billy to second automatically, with no risk.
And catcher has a great arm.

Not that huge a deal, but I think the better play there is to have Hamilton hold on at first.
