The mismanagement and inexplicable continues. You have a built in excuse, including Marquis coming off surgery just a year ago, he is the 5th starter and he is really not very good.

Ugh. Not a good day for the Bats. Suarez and Yorman back on the interstate, and a shaky (although not terrible) start from Iggy.

Tigers fans must think they assaulted the Reds with that Alfredo Simon trade. Time will tell though. It's very early.

Reds got what they wanted from the Simon trade, financial relief and a return for an impending free agent.

If one looks at his BB rate, GB rate, and K rate it should be obvious that Simon can be effective, particularly with a good defense behind him.

But this off-season was all about money, which should be patently obvious and there's more to come along those lines IMO.

I see how the local press is now saying Iglesias and Lorenzen for the bullpen.

But I'm not sure they address that these guys are being trained to fill starting spots that are
highly likely to be open soon. And are not experienced minor league starters and need work.

The guy I see for a possible promotion is Contreras.

I think they need to build up Lorenzen. Iglesias will be 26 next year. He can relieve this year and add some innings in Winter Ball. The 30 inning or less jump isn't as big a deal with a 26 year old as it is with a 22 year old. Get him 65 or 70 innings in the pen, get him 8 to 10 starts this winter 50 innings or so) and let him prepare as a starter in Spring Training. I don't really see a problem to be honest. If he was 21, I'd see a huge problem. He's older and it's a non-issue IMO.

That OPS, currently at .554, just will not cut it.

The problem is that Iglesias is not proficient at being a starting pitcher.

It's not just about innings.

It's essentially teaching the man a new job.

I just don't believe you can leave that training for winter ball. I fully agree with the Reds' approach on these two.

I do not agree with some of the bullpen choices the Reds made this off-season. That's when all this should have been addressed.

I agree that going through a line-up three times is important, but the team needs help now and I'd use the guy there. They can eliminate the innings issue and I don't really think starting in AAA is that much different than Winter Ball. OTOH, experience getting major league hitters out provides something he won't get in AAA. I think starting for 4 months is secondary at this point. This team can't afford to wait for ideal situations.

Working as a starter under the guidance of Reds' personnel and the AAA staff is much different than playing winter ball.

At some point, if Iggy is making progress as a starter and the minor league innings are piling up, then I have no problem making the move. Right now, I wouldn't do it.

I would use Cingrani in late relief, I would bring up Contreras who has started off well. I would be in the trade market. But I would let Iggy and Lorenzen keep it going as minor league starters for awhile.

I take Walt's comments as further confirmation that his eyes are on 2017.

I don't think Walt will prioritize this season over the future, particularly with starting pitching. He already has a hole in the rotation and expects more soon. He needs ready in house replacements.

During spring training, when Tony went to the pen, he pitched a few two innings stints I saw. He was great. Some of the opposition players were kids, late spring training games. Tony was dominant.

I was concerned by the two innings stints. It implied longer relief. It seemed so obvious that Diaz, Cingrani, and Chapman should be the late inning guys. I think most of RedsZone felt that way.

Watching him pitch today, it's just infuriating.

So, if Kevin Gregg "gets it together" and becomes what he was 3 or 4 years ago, is that somebody we want pitching meaningful innings? This is the part I don't get. They aren't hoping for a comeback, but a career year at age 37.

If he gets it together - which is a big if - I think it would be OK. He would be better than Badenhop, Hoover and Diaz.Right now he's pitching in an ideal situation and the way this season is going there are probably going to be a lot of these situations.

This offense is in need of retool. It's done and not going to get it done as constructed. Don't give me "It's April." It's season two, and its time for this show to be cancelled. I'd be willing to lose games this season to do so.

I agree a retool is needed, but losing Devin, 3rd injury in 3 years in a row that is going to affect the lineup..... this team needs to sacrifice a few chickens for better health luck.

Hasn't had an FIP below 4 since 2010. Hasn't had a BB/9 below 4 since 2009. If he's all the way back he's a mop-up guy. I don't care what the saves stats says.

I hope he turns it around and like Greg Vaughn in 1999, does his damage as the season wore on.

However that AB clause in his contract tells me that they should use Bosch more in LF before that decision comes to a head.

No one deserves to hit 4th on this team other than Votto. More below average performers that out weight and put a negative stamp on the really good ones.

Like KC said...... they are looking towards 2017. But they are just like Bowden was back in the 2000's.... One foot in, but really half Aing it.

I am a life long Red fan, I am not sure if I like this team or not. I would like to see Bruce benched and Winkler brought up. Marquis and several other pitchers are not major league quality, an it is time Price acknowledge this before we are 10 games out.
