I hope Lorenzen has a Cueto-like debut. Didn't Cueto strike out 10 in his first start? I will have to look that one up. Yes, he did. On April 49, 2008, Cueto made his ML debut against the Diamondbacks. He went 7 innings giving up just one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out 10.

Was thinking that as well, but he's never played an inning there in either the minors or majors, so I could see the logic in Negron.

Mesoraco probably isn't catching again this year, so Pena has a long, grueling season ahead of him. Rest him as much as possible.

Here's a weird list: The pitchers in the last 10 years who made their MLB debut by starting a game for the Cincinnati Reds

Homer Bailey
Phil Dumatrait
Tom Shearn
Johnny Cueto
Daryl Thompson

Matt Maloney
Mike Leake
Travis Wood
Sam LeCure
Todd Redmond

And now today Michael Lorenzen.

He cannot catch and might not be able to all year. So he is the 2015 version of a Roger Freed or Bob Bailey. He is just a PH who might DH when they go to AL parks. So it's almost like he is out for the year.

Would have been nice if they had Mesoraco get in some reps during the winter and/or Spring Training at first base.

My thought exactly. A catcher with a bat like Devin needs to have a backup position. All the good ones do - Posey, Santana, McCann. Mauer, Martinez always did when they were catchers.

If Mesoraco could play OF and/or 1B at a respectable level, and I have no reason to think he couldn't - he could at least be getting some at bats to help the team. This is all on Price unless Devin has some on the field deficiency that nobody has ever said before.

Give up on him when he turns into stubbs. I would be worried if I haven't seen Billy have some great AB this year, and he is drawing more walks. He has all the tools, and has had a few games were he carried the team. As long as he is running hard and smiling, I will not give up.

It's not optimal, but his glove and speed provide value. Lot of other teams have a sub .300 OBP guy as an everyday player, even the Royals who went to the World Series. The problem really is when you have several of them, like the Reds did last year.

Yep. With this bullpen, we can't pull starters after 4 IP.
This is why Lorenzen and Inglesis ideally should spend all this year in AAA.
I understand, Homer getting hurt is an emergency.. but the Reds reasoning at the end of spring training was sound.
These guys have plenty of talent, but if they can't give us at least 5 IP, they aren't going to help this year (as starters)

Throwing over 100 pitches doesn't ruin an arm. Players do it in the minors. Stop complaining and let the kid get his work in.

kbrake
04-29-2015, 01:59 PM
When did 100 pitches become the threshold where all young arms fall off? I'm guessing Price has a better feel for what Lorenzen has in the tank than we do.

If you can't handle 5 innings and 107 pitches you have no business in a rotation at the MLB level.

I mean, no offense, but if he can't go 105 pitches, Axelrod or Holmberg should've gotten the call instead of him.
I doubt he's that fragile. He's going to have to make that jump. Why not do it today.. I doubt an extra 12 pitches is going to kill him.

PhillipsHead
04-29-2015, 02:01 PM
All things considered, not a terrible debut for Lorenzen. 5 IP, 3 ER. We've certainly had worse debuts from starters, but the kid's got a good arm. Obviously has to work a little more on pitching vs. throwing, but I wasn't too underwhelmed with his performance.
