Game 29: Reds at White Sox

Hamilton 8
Byrd 7
Frazier 5
Mesoraco DH
Phillips 4
Bruce 9
Cozart 6
Barnhart 2
Negron 3

Jason Marquis, RHP
3-1, 5.22 ERA

Marquis is riding a wave of three straight wins in as many starts. In his last two outings, he has given up five earned runs and 12 hits over 14 1/3 innings. With the DH in effect, the club won't get to make use of his hitting prowess.

vs

Hector Noesi, RHP
0-3, 6.75 ERA

In just his third start of the season, Noesi lasted 4 1/3 innings against the Twins before being replaced by Carlos Rodon. Noesi allowed five runs on five hits, including a pair of homers, while fanning two.

It would have been nice if they had a LH batter at first tonight to face Noesi instead of Negron

Weather could be an issue:

So here's my question:

If Mesoraco is healthy enough to DH, shouldn't he be healthy enough to play SOMEWHERE in the field? I get it he can't catch, but he can't get the occasional start in LF or 1B?

Also, if he's healthy enough to DH why in the blue hell did Schumaker PH in the 7th last night instead of him?

Well first they are seeing how he reacts to 4 AB's and running:

With the Reds playing the White Sox in Chicago for three games this weekend and games at American League parks in Kansas City and Cleveland later this month, Mesoraco could be used as the designated hitter by manager Bryan Price.
"Those are great opportunities for him to DH and get some at-bats and an even better test to see how he feels coming out of more regular playing time," Price said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how his body responds to actually getting four or five at-bats in a ballgame and seeing how he feels running the bases and things of that nature."
For National League parks, however, Price and the club have not explored trying Mesoraco at different positions, such as the outfield or first base.
"I don't know if it's something that could happen this year," Price said. "It might be a question that's more pertinent if we come to the conclusion that he can't catch for some reason with his injury, long term -- meaning this season. But we haven't gotten to that point."

I'm guessing because Skip had a little success with Burnett (he was 2 for 4 against him).

And you really want to throw Mesoraco out there to start in LF or 1B despite having zero experience there?

Didn't stop them from doing it with Bruce last year. How is this any different?

I like that we are keeping Byrd in the 2 hole for now. The way he's going right now I wouldn't mess with anything.

1. And it didn't work. He wasn't so good.

2. RF to 1B isn't nearly as big a transition as catcher to LF or 1B.

Hopefully Byrd can keep his hot streak going and Mesoraco can hit the ball hard tonight. Gotta be able to score some runs for Marquis. Oh yeah, and another HR for Frazier ;)

In the offseason, Mesoraco definitely needs to get some reps at a secondary position.

I like the part where it says that "the founders of change.org probably did not want the site to be used for this." Like, c'mon. It's the Internet.

I also know the Cozart is coming back from an injury, but I'd almost prefer him to hit lead-off and plug Hamilton into a lower place on the batting order.

I am not sure about the penguin, but Pena seems to have about one hand too many.

Or, maybe, that's not a penguin, that's a Ron Cey bobblehead.

lol I know.

And a petition to demote a crappy pitcher to the minor leagues is FAR from the worst option on change.org

With the Bulls playing at home in the playoffs and the White Sox off to a rough start (and the bad weather forecast to boot), I bet we see a very sparse crowd tonight. And not just because of people going to the Bulls' game in person, but because of all the people that will be staying home to watch it on TV. Wish I was in Chitown right now. This will be one of those games where you'll be able to pick your front row seat, especially if there is a rain delay to start the festivities.

It looks like there might be a window between 9pm-midnight to get the game in. Might be like the Pirates game that went until the early morning hours.

So Votto's suspension is that he has to sit out half of a doubleheader. Couldn't have asked for anything better than that.
