1. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
2. Joey Votto (L) 1B
3. Todd Frazier (R) 3B
4. Jay Bruce (L) RF
5. Brayan Pena (S) C
6. Marlon Byrd (R) LF
7. Zack Cozart (R) SS
8. Jason Marquis (L) P
9. Billy Hamilton (S) CF

Thoughts?

Personally, I think it's the best lineup of the season.

Hamilton is the perfect 9th place hitter, with the pitcher batting 8th.

In all fairness, Price's lineups have been his strong suit. It's a shame they don't matter all that much.

According to Elias, the last time a #Reds pitcher didn't bat 9th in the starting lineup, came on 9/7/33 vs Brooklyn. (Red Lucas batted 7th)

This is what was missing all along! The stupid Tony LaRussa brainchild of batting the pitcher 8th. I know the offense has been substandard; I realize the Reds are ravaged by injuries again; I understand we have the worst bullpen in MLB. But the real missing piece of the puzzle was batting the pitcher 8th.

Hallelujah! Bryan Price has cracked the code.

Getting out of this losing streak is going to be more about the players than anything Price can do, but I do love this lineup. Feels like Price is trying something new every day.

Personally, I think it's the best lineup of the season.

Biggest problem with that lineup is that Marquis is pitching. Otherwise, sure why not, what's the worst that can happen, nine straight losses?

Reds starting lineup:

1. Phillips
2. Votto
3. Frazier
4. Bruce
5. Pena
6. Byrd
7. Cozart
8. Marquis
9. Hamilton

First time since 1933 that Reds haven't batted the pitcher 9th. Break the streak today boys!

Red Lucas was quite a hitter for a pitcher. In a 16-year career with the Dodgers, Braves, Reds, and Pirates he hit .281/.340/.347/.687 in 1607 PA's.

In his eight years as a Red, his line was .300/.361/.375/.735 in 1101 PA's. He also started three games at 2B, two at SS, and one in LF.

Votto has reverted back to being a bad defensive player. He'll make some good plays but overall he's very bad. How he didn't get charged with an error yesterday on a ground ball hit right at him is beyond me. Oh wait, MLB official scorers are like Little League moms. Nevermind. It's not beyond me at all.

Watched a college baseball game over the weekend (league tournament championship between Wright State and Milwaukee). The official scorer was giving errors to shortstops on extremely tough plays over the middle. On one play, the SS ranged behind second base, made a great play to get to the ball, barely juggled it for a millisecond, fired a strike to first ... and the runner barely beat it out. It was ruled an error.

Even I was like "C'mon man, that should be a hit." But the point is that MLB defensive players should be held to a certain standard. Like if a ground ball is hit right at you and you boot it (like Votto yesterday) it's an automatic error. Doesn't matter if it was "hit really hard." You're a professional baseball player performing at the highest level. The standard for college players shouldn't be higher than MLB players.

The point is, you don't hit-and-run when the pitcher is struggling. That's typical Reds' low baseball IQ. Price doesn't understand sabermetrics for the life of him.

You hit-and-run to try and spark something when you're struggling and there's a good pitcher on the mound. Not in that situation. Just bad baseball right there.

Aggressive baserunning is one of the few things we're really good at on offense. Why would we stop doing that on a 3-1 count with a good contact hitter at the plate?

Stays out of a DP or maybe gets a big rally going.

You're missing the point. The Rockies' pitcher was struggling to say the least. You don't hit-and-run and bail him out in that situation. Every situation is different and when a bad pitcher is struggling is not a good time to attempt a hit-and-run. There are much more optimal times.

Our slowest player at bat in a hitters count, with a guy on 1st base and 1 out.
Contact hitter with a good eye.
Decent speed at 1st.

Sounds to me like the perfect time to hit and run.

You're not into sabermetrics, are you? There is never a "perfect" time to hit-and-run. In fact, sabermetrics say you should never do it (not counting 3-2 with two outs). I'm not saying I would go that far, but what we saw last inning certainly was not the "perfect" time to hit-and-run.

I'm saying that you can easily make an argument for why you shouldn't hit and run, after a hit and run failed, in any possible situation.

One of our biggest strengths on offense is our aggressiveness on the bases. We shouldn't shy away from that now that times are tough.

You make the call trusting Pena to put the bat on a strike or to take a ball. He messed up, it looked ugly and that's that.

Nice double for the Byrd man.

Byrd at .207 flirting with that coveted .210 BA level. You can just see the Mendoza line moving further and further into the background.

Cozart walks, which is more common this year, good for him. Shows you, if you hit a little the pitcher may walk you.

Marquis strikes out. A pinch hitter might have been wise there, since the Reds trail and runs would be helpful.

Ninth place hitter Hamilton, fearing that he will soon hit tenth, with a patient at bat. Gets ahead 3-0, then a strike.
Billy with a nice looping liner into center for a hit and an RBI. People searching the web to see when the Reds last singled a run home..

Former Red Steve Foster getting a lot of video time on the Reds telecast. He's in the Rockies dugout. I remember him as a good young pitcher, then he got hurt. Apparently a Rockies coach of some kind.

BP does the unthinkable. Swings at the dreaded first pitch. Patience Brandon, Anyway, the Reds are getting closer and trail by a run.

Marquis had a better chance of hitting the ball than anyone on the bench.

That is probably true. Particularly in light of the Parra/Mes decision leaving the Reds with a four man bench.

Schumaker has been hitting better, there I said it, but it's too early for your main PH threat. Barnhart is the backup catcher can't use him. Which leaves Negron and Boesch.

Looking at the bench, you really have to wonder how this Reds team was built.

One on, one out against Marquis here in the fifth, but now a CS. End of innings, 4-3 Rocks.
