Against RHP, Reds should use Schumaker against righties a bit more often.

Byrd has a huge split, does his damage against lefties. Has a .600 OPS against righties with a .167 BA.

Looks to me like Price wants the sweep - Schumaker really the only "scrub" out there today.

I'm starting to think some of his success as a pitching coach was simply the coin flip going his way a lot. I'm sure he knows more about it than me, but I always thought the idea of leaving a kid in there and allowing him to put the go ahead run on base late in the game was a sin. Agree to disagree. With his pitch count not being an issue on a day that he has good stuff, these are the situations that he'll learn a lot from imo. Just a loss of concentration for an inning.

As Brantley noted, it wasn't about pitch count or stuff. It was a manageable pitch count, and he was still throwing 95. But his mechanics were off, he was visibly uncomfortable, and it was clear after the 2nd walk that it wasn't going to magically get better.

Aren't the Nats supposed to be a tough team? They seem to be about as tough as gnats.

Missing Scherzer, Fister and Zimmermann and had won 9 straight series....this is a good sweep but the Gnats will be fine.

I Know Grace because he was shagging fly balls during BP Friday when I was at the game....he looked better doing that than pitching.

Baseball sure is a funny game. I thought the Nats were coming to town with the mighty Bryce Harper and they're going to beat the snot out of our woeful Reds. Instead, we get a Reds sweep. I give up.

If Walt Jocketty was an economist, he would be a proponent of laissez-faire. And for one magical weekend deep in May, he would be right.

Was it just me, or did the Nationals look like a disinterested and uninspired baseball club?

The most amazing thing to me has been the complete turnaround by JJ Hoover. Lost double figures in relief last year and is now 4-0 with a 2.18 ERA. Wow! Phillies should be just what the doctor ordered. Fingers crossed.

BTW, Bryce Harper has the absolute worst attitude of any young player I've seen in years. No doubt about the talent, but so glad the Reds pretty much shut him down this series.

Agree to disagree. With his pitch count not being an issue on a day that he has good stuff, these are the situations that he'll learn a lot from imo. Just a loss of concentration for an inning.

Then why does Price have 13 men in the bullpen? For this reason. The pen has been pitching very good lately too, not like in April. Let them learn when they are no longer actually still in contention, which could still be soon.

Agreed. I'm just so happy for JJ and Cozart. They both have to be enjoying the hell out of their personal turnarounds.

Agree as well. I expected Cozart to be better, maybe not this much. Did not know what to expect from Hoover at all. He could look great for 2 batters then implode with a walk and a blast.

Looking back at the tape, Joey Votto did walk on 3 balls in the #Reds 6-run 7th

Yep. Just checked it out.

Strike 1
Ball 1
Strike 2
Foul ball
Ball 2 (looked to be strike 3, btw)
Ball 3 ---> Votto walks down to first

No, he's just put the lie to the long held statement, you can't steal first base.

I feel a climb to .500 coming on.

And then a losing streak.

Is this going to be one of those teams that drives us crazy and prevents the front office from deciding whether they need a course correction?

That was a fun weekend. I mentioned in another thread last week that it would be very baseball-like if the Reds swept the Nationals. Never thought they would do it though. Maybe this will be the start of something good. Not holding my breath for it but you never know.
