Think it was a make-up call. The 0-2 pitch the ump called a ball was a strike.

The walk to Upton is the frustrating thing about young pitchers. Two outs, nobody on, first inning, just throw him a pitch in the zone.

JaxRed

Matt Kemp grounds out weakly on off-speed pitch. 0-0 going to bottom of first.

Frazier doubles, both runs scores. Straight to dead center field wall, and fairly butchered by Venable. Joey gambled correctly that it would not be caught and he scores just after Phillips.

JaxRed

Bruce just misses one and Frazier advances to 3rd with 2 out.

Pena then rips double down line and scores Frazier. 3-0.

Bad base running by Schumaker. You have to clear the pitcher's spot in the lineup in that situation.

Yonder slices single to Schumaker, who was still thinking about his steal and boots ball allowing Yonder to get to 2nd.

Kc61
06-06-2015, 04:41 PM
I mean, Pena was on third base, if Lorenzen hits a seeing eye grounder it's a run.

I can fully understand trying to steal a base by surprise, but why with RISP at third base?

It wasn't exactly Hamilton trying to steal either.

Ok, continue with the game thread.

Big Klu

Alonso singles, and a lapse in concentration by Schumaker results in an E7, allowing Yonder to go to second.

Lorenzen then walks the next batter, so the error now his no effect on earned/unearned runs.

The infield was playing back though, especially at the corners. If the pitcher doesn't hustle to make the play, BP is safe. I can see him dropping the bunt on his own in that case.

Cingrani has a decent second pitch. In between a slider and a curve. Pena kept calling for it, Cingrani kept calling him off. I'm guessing that's what Price was yelling at him over.

He should have tried it when he got 2-2. I understood once he went 3-2 why he was reluctant to do it. This whole thing will not end well.

If your spirit is no longer strong there is no hope for the rest of us.

You can actually Fire Diaz though. All you have to do is option him to AAA and bring up the next clown to see what they can do.

As soon as it turned June the bullpen went back to April bad. You reap what you sow with some of the moves made to help this bullpen but some of these pitchers are just very dense, obtuse or just bad.

This game isn't on Price, it's on the players. However...

I would have left Cingrani in for the 8th. He wasn't likely to bat the next inning, and bringing anyone else burns a pitcher for one inning, in a tie game. It also removes Cingrani, who is the one guy in the pen who can go multiple innings.

The players lost this game, but Price still makes rookie mistakes nearly every game.

After that last inning he pitched and what happen with the signs....he was not coming out there again. No mistakes made by anyone besides this terrible bullpen, period. He goes back out there and probably is not in the right frame of mind to pitch anyways.

I agree however it seems like if it is not the bullpen blowing games, it is one of the hitters going through a down cycle or one of the starters. Last month it was the hitting most of the month and also the starters, now we are back to the bullpen.

Tough to make a good salad out of caca.

Big difference between Kimbrel and Chapman. Kimbrel is a closer because he's not good enough to be a starter. Chapman is a closer because Dusty was selfish.

I honestly wonder if the Reds are skimping on advance scouts and things of that nature. Seems like the rest of the league knows how to pitch these guys and the Reds don't.

It also just could be a quality issue. But that is a good point. The Reds always have seemed to be behind the curve in terms of advanced scouting. I think it's one of the reasons why they do so poorly in the playoffs.

Here's what I don't get. Cingrani was taken out of the starter role because he did not have enough pitches, mostly FB. His most effective pitch is his FB to RHB's. His delivery seems to make it difficult for them to pick up the FB. As a starter he faced mostly RHB's and was, therefore, fairly effective even with the FB dominated mix. LHB's hit him much better, but there were fewer of them in the batting order when he started. So realizing this, why does Price insist on using him in relief and bringing him in to face LHB's?

I really think there may be some bad feelings between Cingrani and Price/the Reds. I think Cingrani feels he was unfairly taken out of consideration for a rotation spot, something Price said he personally lobbied for. This fact, combined with his extremely spotty usage in April while everyone else failed, can give one the impression that Bryan Price doesn't think too much Cingrani. And I would guess vice versa.

Welsh already stated very early this year that they do not use advance scouts anymore. They use the tapes. They use VHS I think. DVD is not yet their thing. They basically use tape to do their scouting. Sounds very Margish really.

Pretty much everyone uses tapes. You can do all your advanced scouting by using MLB.com these days. Every pitch is accessible online, they even have velocity, movement, etc.. That's not the issue. The issue is what information is being learned, and how it is being taught to the coaches and players.

The vent job Price did at the mound & in the dugout would seem to confirm that theory. Like now you get pissed?
http://www.700wlw.com/onair/lance-mcalister-7818/watch-price-rips-into-cingrani-and-13656365/

It may just be frustration because Price knows Cingrani "can" do better vs the rest of the relievers who essentially are what they are.
Some of it too is just that Cingrani and Price's personalities are fairly combustible and combative. So put them together in a tense situation and you get fireworks.
