And Skip, Negron and DeJesus aren't? At least Boesch has three years of starting in the outfield his belt. He also hits lefties and righties the same, so no need to platoon him.

Skip has been the team's best pinch hitter, and Negron and DeJesus are infielders. Why waste them as starting LF?

Doesn't matter. The only way he was going to start against Hamels is if there were no other options available.

I could make a strong argument that that is the case, lol. It really doesn't matter, but it just seems strange that he hasn't gotten a single start in LF since Byrd was injured.

Thanks for posting...good to know. At this stage of the game and with what the Reds have to work with, it makes sense to give Boesch a look for a handful of games in a row to gauge what he can do...if anything. It really is a what-do-you-have-to-lose situation.

The injury explains it, but it makes no sense to have him on the roster as the backup OF, if you aren't going to use him when an OF gets hurt.

Also, he's not garbage. This is his career slash line from over 1500 PA's: .253/.306/.405/.712, with solid defense.

Not starting material, but a solid back up, and definitely not garbage.

Because Price wants another right-handed bat in the lineup against Hamels, and he doesn't want to go with Negrón.

And Schumaker is also a natural OF with starting experience in MLB.

Look, I don't think it's a great situation, either. I would rather have an actual right-handed OF on the bench, but when you have a 13-man pitching staff and only four bats on the bench (one of which is a catcher, and another which is a SS) then your choices are limited.

If he's healthy, I wouldn't be surprised to see Boesch start tomorrow against a righty.

Still fuming about the official scorer taking away Hamilton's steal of home. Here is the official definition of a fielder's choice:

FIELDER'S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair grounder and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner, throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner. The term is also used by scorers (a) to account for the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder who handles his safe hit attempts to put out a preceding runner; (b) to account for the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner; and (c) to account for the advance of a runner made solely because of the defensive team’s indifference (undefended steal).

The only way it's a fielder's choice, is if Ruiz had a chance to throw Hamilton out, but instead, chose to throw or first base.

I would love to hear the official scorer's explanation of his ruling.

For the bench, I'd give him a try. The Reds certainly can find a spot for him.

I think his glove is pretty pedestrian. His power is overhyped as he tended to use the short porch in MM quite a bit. He whiffs a TON and has poor contact and OB skills. IMO he's pretty much a near clone of Chris Dominguez.

But yes, he's still fairly young, if they want to throw him in the minors and see what happens, fine. But the ML bench...no thanks. He sucks right now.

If they select him on waivers, I think he's a roster player. I doubt they can option him out, my guess is he's out of options. Probably why he was DFA'd.

I'd let the Reds coaches work with Dominguez. Put him on the bench. See how it works out.

Leake stayed in to hit in order to save a bench bat. They had already decided to pull the plug on him before he ever came to the plate. In fact, if Ivan hadn't homered, they probably would have PH for Leake.

I haven't had time to focus on Hoover's underlying numbers. But he's obviously made adjustments. From earlier this season, his ground ball rate was significantly improved, his walks still high but better.

Hoover has been a high K, high BB, fly ball pitcher, which is a bad combo at GABP.

We should look into his underlying numbers in depth, IMO his improvement is no accident.
