Why change a good thing? Lineup is the same as last night except the pitcher.

Barnhart has been on fire lately, so I have no problem with using him. Just makes me wonder if something is wrong with Pena.

I was a little surprised to see Barnhart in there today. But I'm glad he is. Go with the hot hand or bat in this case.

Quick question...when do the Cardinals come back to earth? I mean good grief. They are NOT a nearly .700 ballclub, are they?

Seems like forever ago, but I still laugh (and cry) when I think back to our first series of the season with them. We were all high and mighty, cocks of the collective walk & what not. They took 2 out of 3, because Cardinals, but a lot of our fans came out of that weekend thinking they were a poor club and we had a lot to be excited about.

Look back at the last game thread if you don't believe me.

I don't see the problem, he doesn't speak the truth. Yes this past week has been terrible for the Reds, but baseball has to be played. If it's not raining, a game shouldn't be in a rain delay. Period. They may think it's easier on the starting pitchers to delay it, but they play every 5 days. Think of how much harder it is for an every day player to be playing well after midnight when the game should be over by 10pm simply because it might rain.

I remember Dusty stretching Homer out in August/September of 2009, he took some heat but I think it was the beginning of Homer's turnaround at the major league level after his pretty brutal start.

The decision tonight to have Disco go 120+ when we still have two weeks to go to the All-Star Break (after which you are expecting him to make another 15 starts) and on a night where he was hardly dominating is just asinine to me.

Simply preserving the bullpen. Behind 3-1 after six, the objective is to avoid using three relievers.

At the same time, he's trying to get DeSclafani stretched for longer outings, which is debatable.

It didn't work, but that's the objective. The Reds have used the pen heavily the last week, two thirteen inning games, and have a game at 12:30PM tomorrow.

But he has 6 relievers out in that bullpen and maybe more. If they're that fragile, I do not know what to say.

I think it's more about trying to keep Peña fresh, while at the same time getting Barnhart into the flow of more regular PT. I think Peña got overexposed last year, and needs occasional time off to stay fresh.

Pena relieved Barnhart at 1pm on Sunday, first game. He came in as a hitter for Parra and stayed in, caught the rest of game 1.

He then caught the complete second game on that day.

Tomorrow is an early day game after a night game.

So Pena rests tonight and plays tomorrow.

If he uses his main relievers they are out tomorrow afternoon probably.

If he uses his backup relievers he might as well stick with Disco.

He took a shot at one more inning for Disco to save the pen. It didn't work. So we'll get them in game 7 of the World Series instead of Game 6.

Every Reds reliever pitched a two inning stint, at least, on Sunday or Monday -- except for Badenhop (who threw 1.1) and Chapman (who threw 1).

That's why Disco came out for the seventh.

Maybe not if "most" would look at the logs for the last two games. Hoover threw 27 pitches, for example. Matthew a 27 pitch stint. Contreras a whopping 45 pitches. Villarreal 51.

Sorry, hate to confuse things with such details.

I've given up on trying to read Frazier's swings. He can look hilarious and amazing in the same at bat. If he reads it and is on balance he covers the entire plate and then some, and the ball is crushed somewhere. If not, he looks silly.

I don't know that he can ever overswing. His swing it was it is. Sometimes he's fooled and adjusts, and it kinda looks like he shortened up.

With all the hype about the All Star vote and his great season, Frazier may be trying to do too much. I think he can overswing -- which of course is completely unnecessary since his normal swing generates so much power.

So Badenhop over another inning of Disco. I view that as a quibble.

I mean, if the alternative in the seventh was Badenhop, who came in and had nothing, then it's hardly worth debating.

Only for the need to preserve Disco for another year.....like I was hoping it would back in 1981.

If he was at less than 100 pitches and not laboring for most of the game I would agree....and I am one who does not mind pitchers throwing 110-120 pitches from time to time, or going up to about 110 on most of their starts.

My Kingdom for a reliever on this team who can go 2 innings every other game or 2. I also blame the offense for not doing much as well....so everything has been covered.

Well that was my original point. if you look at the usage and pitch counts the last couple of days, we see why Disco pitched the seventh.

Price trying to save the pen.

He eventually used Badenhop who had been more lightly used, and it didn't work out.

I'm sure Price's thought was to try and avoid using primary relievers tonight.

Hopefully it pays off tomorrow and they can participate in a winning effort.

I have been saying that baseball organizations need to start developing multiple inning type relievers and not just LOOGYS and now ROOGYS. It has turned into a joke that it has come to everyone wanting to emulate what LaRussa did as if it is the only way to run a bullpen.

We've seen it before where a pitcher is used to this extent that either a three or four game slump occurs (because of suspected overuse in a single game) or an injury occurs or both. It's only speculative to imply it's because of the 120+ pitched game, but we've seen it several times. When it's done with young talent that's expected to be part of the future rotation in a meaningless game, asinine is the only word that ca be used to describe it. It would be like a UPS driver slamming his vehicle into a couple dozen parked UPS trucks. There's no excuse for abusing company assets like that.

#RealTalk... This has to be one of the dumbest rain delays I've ever seen SMDH!!! Let's get ready for Midnight Baseball!!! #KillingMeSmalls

So did that second cell of rain ever show up? My wife and I knew we wouldn't be staying if there was a long delay. At 8:00 p.m. when they said it would be another hour due to this expected heavy cell of rain coming, we decided there was no sense waiting that out and only getting to see a couple of innings and maybe have to leave in the run. They easily could have gotten a few innings in before that rain came. The odd thing is that when they made the announcement they said something about the pitchers, so I'm guessing they didn't want to start, stop and then have to go to the bullpen if there was another long delay.

It's frustrating to have those tickets go to waste, although I see there were 11 strikeouts, so we do get two free pizzas.

To wait around for it to rain for two hours is just crazy IMO. It does a real disservice to the fans. On a work night you can't wait around all night waiting on a game to start and I would think it would really be frustarting if its not raining at all. I can understand the teams point of getting a pitcher ready and then the rains come. The Nationals were really upset over the weekend because they had to burn a pitcher when a game was called after just one inning in Philadelphia. Unless the rain is really bearing down on the ballpark, though, I would get it started. The weather can do some crazy things and more often than you don't get the expect precipitation in those cases.
