No problem with giving Byrd a night off, though I would have given the start to Rodriguez. (Unless the idea is to load up the lineup with left-handed hitters vs. Scherzer.)

I doubt Price wanted to give YRod his first start against Scherzer

In his last 4 games, Scherzer has pitched 34.1 innings, and given up 11 hits, 4 runs, and whopping .277 OPS for his opponents.

I didn't realize who was starting for the Nationals until I had already posted, which is why I added the statement in parentheses. But I agree that it's probably best that Rodriguez doesn't make his first start vs. Scherzer.

In fairness, Patkin had a wicked trick pitch.

Thought while watching Scherzer on the mound: Take a look at his numbers between 2008 and 2012. That kind of steady progress and indication of his pitching ability is what we saw with Homer Bailey and why the Reds locked him up to the deal they did, hoping to get the kind of performance Scherzer has put up since 2013, his age 28 season (Homer's age heading into last year).

I just watched the replay to see if Bruce thought maybe there were 2 out. I don't think so but...... On the replay, you can see Bruce about 6 or 7 feet off 3rd, with the ball 75% of the way to the 1b, and he hasn't started running yet because it happened so fast. I don't care if the "run on contact" was on.... he should have stayed. 1b had ball before he had taken 2 steps

Bruce is no longer fearing the shift. He's just decided to pull the ball, or hit up the middle, and he'll get his share through the infield.

I think this is one of the adjustments that have really helped Jay. A smash to the right side is still better than a weak fly or grounder to left. Even with the shift.

Am I the only one who wanted to put my foot through the TV over Thom's call of the Frazier error? Like, bruh, I get it. I'm bummed as hell. But your job is to call the play, I don't need your "Woe is me" voice and tsk-tsk'ing.

That is my main complaint with Thom, he is the play-by-play man but he analysis way too much which is why I'll take Grande or Kelch over him every time.

True. It's a shame they didn't find success in the postseason, but I tend to find more enjoyment over the long season and this has been one of the most fun runs for me as a fan since the BRM era. Went a long way toward getting him elected. Who could not resist voting for Charlie Brown? We became friends during his first campaign and met Sherrod, his brother along the way. Sad story is Charlie got into a real mess in the divorce from his first wife (apparently he impreginated his secretary), and had to resign. Last time I heard from him was in 1989. Magnificent performance by Cueto. If that was his last start as a Red he went out in style. I do think if Cueto wins this final vote for the ASG the Reds will skip his start on Sunday and let him pitch the ASG. I read that Cueto said he really wanted to pitch in the ASG this year. So that may be his Reds finale send off.

Keep in mind back in Mullane's day, teams generally just had two or three pitchers. In 1884, Toledo had two primary pitchers - Mullane pitched in 67 games (of the 104 played) and played another 28 in the field. The other pitcher was Hall of Fame umpire Hank O'Day (who was the umpire in the famous Merkle play in the 1908). A handful of other players pitched a smattering of games. There were lots of complete games.
