A 12:35 game today. Bourgeois in CF. Seems like he always plays these 12:35 games. This is also the free game of the day on MLBTV. Cards resting Peralta and Molina too.

Grichuk hitting cleanup after killing us last night. I hate the Angels for trading a first round pick like him to the Cardinals just so they could get back a declining David Freese. Now Grichuk will terrorize us for years.

I don't know what they're saying officially, but it's been raining off and on all morning and they're predicting an inch or more of rain throughout the day. Getting this game in today may be problematic.

The crazy thing about that is, Grichuk was a throw-in in that trade after LA asked for Fernando Salas.

But don't fret too much, sustained success with a 30% K-Rate and sub 6% BB-Rate doesn't usually happen.

From what I saw on weather.com they are saying a near 100% chance of rain most of the afternoon. It doesn't look good. Cards are back in Cincy in mid September for a four game series. That may turn into a five gamer.

Well, I took a personal half day - but I'm not going to waste it and pay for parking just for them to call it an hour after start time. The Cards trip in September has two day games (Sat and Sun) - so it's looking good for a day/night doubleheader. Another problem is that with the two tickets I have, only one can be used for the makeup game... and that was a mistake on the Reds part! Normally exchanged tickets are complimentary-no value-no rain check.

I think batting order tends to be over-analyzed/rated, as 6 or 7 good hitters in a line-up will out-produce 4 or 5, no matter how you shuffle it.
But I'm wondering if Price wouldn't be better off to group his 2 hottest hitters with the 2 others guys swinging decent bats.
To wit: Phillips, Votto, Suarez, Bruce, Frazier, Byrd, Barnhart, Bourgeous, and Lorenzen. Even better, Billy should play all Lorenzen's starts and bat 9th.

Price may be reluctant to move Suarez from where he is doing well, but batting between Votto and Bruce seems ideal. Frazier is just in too much of a funk right now.
The way it is today, Phillips, Votto, Bruce and Suarez are all followed by guys who are hitting-challenged or struggling.

Course, we got Blandino as the comp for losing Choo.

I suppose the main takeaway here is that comp picks can be very valuable.

Todd Frazier was also a "sandwich" pick. Although, I can't remember if that was compensation for losing a free agent or not.

Curious strategy to give the opponents base-runners when they are up and outs (sac bunts) when they aren't.
Seems like it would make winning games more difficult for a team that has enough trouble doing that on it's own.

We all remember how great Frazier was over his first 400-500 career plate appearances, being held back only by a veteran whose career had long been over.

But, as expected, he had a sophomore slump as pitchers and scouts made their adjustments. Those who hadn't witnessed mlb baseball before, and apparently there were many of them here at redszone, were saying his beginning was a fluke, a small sample size (the favorite excuse here at redszone when they don't know the reason for something), and a number of other reasons to suggest that he wasn't the 3rd Baseman of the REDS' future.

Then Todd adjusted to the low-and-away pitch and made other adjustments at the plate, while also making strides in his defense at the same time. At one point, he was the only Right-handed bat producing for the team (when Phillips was either out or struggling, or Mesoraco was either out or struggling or splitting time at Catcher).

Then, this year, Todd took it to another level and placed himself in the MVP conversation, a thought only associated with Votto and Bruce the last seven years here. But, as what always happens in the mlb, the pendulum swung the other way. Even the unbelievably consistent Votto has had long periods of slumps, something difficult to fathom when looking at him right now and in his MVPish seasons.

Todd was a Little League Champion, a 1st Round draft pick (supplemental, but still the 1st round), and a rookie-of-the-year if not for the hype of surrounding Bryce Harper and the plate appearances he was robbed of by Scott Rolen and Dusty Baker. Even in his "sophomore slump", he improved as an overall player because those adjustments eventually have to be made by all major leaguers as it's part of the process (see Jay Bruce). Frazier is still on the rise and his best days are still ahead of him.

This too shall pass.

The offense definitely has to be addressed. Today, it's not Billy's fault.

Perhaps we can compete in the Red Bull cliff diving championships.

I fell asleep a few nights back watching the Reds and that was on FSN Ohio when I woke up at 3 am. Evidently, Russians are good at it.

Caught five minutes of that today. Jumping from 80 feet up looked really crazy (or however high it was). No offense to any Russians here, but I think they might qualify as an "on edge" people.

Marlon Byrd swings at a ridiculous amount of pitches. All 3 looked like they were out of the zone.

Michael Wacha might just be really good, too.

Naturally I'm sure Travieso will be even better. One day. Maybe.

I'm bitter not because the Reds didn't draft Wacha, but because all of the reports at the time were that Wacha would basically be a major league ready innings-eater like Mike Leake. And while there was obvious value in a player like that, the Reds already had a stacked rotation and it made sense to pass on him in favor of a high school player with a possibly higher ceiling down the road.

So of course the Cardinals take Wacha and it turns out, surprise, he throws even harder than they thought and he's an ace. Because of course.

I get that, but I'm still going to be critical of the Reds thinking, because players like Cueto never go down with injury in 2013, or Latos in 2014, or Bailey this year. A solid, cost-controlled innings-eater would be a really nice toy to have at the moment. (regardless of how much he's exceeded his scouting reports)

And that's true but it's not just today. I think Lilliquist could have come out of retirement and retired the Reds in order last night.

I suppose. I supported the Reds thinking at the time, the prospect of drafting a possible TOR arm type in a second straight year (after Stephenson in 2011) seemed a lot more appealing than another Mike Leake.

And hey, you never know. Dodgers fans surely thought their team screwed up when Lincecum won his first Cy Young while that Clayton Kershaw kid was just getting started.

Bruce: 7 for his last 30 and he's not coming close to drawing any walks. When he and Frazier are hitting like this, it doesn't matter what the rest of the team is doing.

Today's "Joe Nuxhall Star of the Game" is Cardinals RHP Michael Wacha, who pitched 7 innings allowing no runs on 4 hits with 6 K's and 2 BB's in earning the win.

Walt doomed the Franchise for-ev-er when he picked Travieso instead of Wacha- I know because there was that guy that kept posting so in the minor league forum.
Between Travieso and Wacha we also had the selections of Giolito and Corey Seagar.
Lots of good names in that draft and it is hard to complain with getting Travieso and Winker in the 1st round.
