View Full Version : Jacksonville Jaguars 2015 Thread

I've been negligent on doing my Jags updates. After the 3-13 season, the big news was the firing on Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch. There were rumors that Jags weren't happy with his relationship with QB Blake Bortles, and when Coach Gus Bradley sat down for the season-ending review and the talk was about changes that would be made, it became evident to Bradley that they were not on the same page, and Fisch was let go.
The Jags interviewed a lot of folks, and there was some surprise when Jags ended up with former Raiders OC Greg Olson who was fired when former Jags Head Coach Jack Del Rio took over. Olsen had been here as QB coach, when Mike Mularkey took over after Del Rio got fired....
But there was also a big hire at Offensive Line when the Jags hired former Buffalo Head Coach Doug Marrone. Marrone was given title of Asst Head Coach. The Jags OL was a huge problem all year including giving up 70 sacks....
Off the field, owner Shad Khan continued his quest to advance the city of Jacksonville itself. There has been an empty shipyards area right by the Jags stadium for years. Khan is leading an effort to transform that area into a commercial/entertainment area. That will take several years to come to fruition.
The Jags had the most caproom of any team this off-season and the desire to spend it for once. We chased a few that got away (until we win, it will still be hard to get guys to come here), but the Jags got some guys they really like. Most notably, Denver FA Tight End Julius Thomas, who was their top target. In addition they got RG Jermy Parnell from Dallas, LB Dan Skuda from SF, DE Jared Odrick from Miami, CB Davon House from GB, C Stephen Wizniewski from Oakland among others.
When the draft hit the Jags seemed to have an outstanding draft that almost every analyst praised highly. With the 3rd overall pick the Jags took DE Dante Fowler. Second round they got Alabama RB TJ Yeldon. 3rd round they took OG AJ Cann from South Carolina, 4th round FS James Sample from Louisville, 5th round FSU WR Rahsad Greene and in the 6th OSU DT Micheal Bennett. In almost every case from the 3rd round on, it was a case of "how was that guy still available"?
And they picked up some intriguing guys in the undrafted Free Agency when picking up 2 guys from Auburn.... RB Corey Grant who runs a 4.2 40 and former QB Nick Marshall who is converting to CB.
On the down side within the first hour of OTA's 1st round pick Dante Fowler was lost for the season with a torn ACL. So next year we get 2 first round picks....:)
Blake Bortles spent the off-season working on his throwing mechanics.
The excitement is high.... the 1st pre-season game starts in 15 minutes..... Go Jags !

I don't know who was the most responsible for Bortles getting hit that much between the HC and the OC, but someone had to take the fall. A rare franchise QB can't be exposed the way he was. Tannehill was sacked 134 times his first three seasons (plus Hits and Hurries). He barely survived it. Bortles is on a Carresquian pace. He'll be properly taken care of this season.

The first pre-season game Blake Bortles looked pretty good. He was 11-15 with 3 drops. Only missed one pass and had a 96.0 rating. And he passed the eye test on his mechanics and his command of the offense/looking over the field. So far so good......now let's see it again tonight against the Giants.

Will Yeldon really play that big of role with the Jaguars this year ?
JaxRed
08-24-2015, 07:09 PM
By all indications, yes. He is scheduled to play this week. Everyone who has seem him seems very impressed. He looks to be the #1 back and split time with Denard Robinson
JaxRed
08-30-2015, 05:51 PM
Well after the 3rd preseason game against the Lions, here's where Jags stand: Yeldon did not do much in his first action. Got about 10 yards on 9 carries. Did have one nice pass on a crossing route. Biggest concerns are on defense so far where the Jags have been unable to get to the QB. It was already an area of concern, hence the 3rd overall pick on Fowler, who was then lost for the season.
But the revamped O-Line which was terrible looks to be at least average which is a big step up.
And the big new is Bortles. Nothing's bigger then getting your QB, and Bortles has looked VERY good thru 3 games. Everyone very excited about that.

And, now Julius Thomas has to have hand surgery (second opinion on Tuesday) that will put him out the first four weeks. Bortles is hitting 2nd and 3rd reads, something most QB's in the NFL never can accomplish in their lifetime. But, in doing so, he's holding onto the ball too long still. Can't do that with Joeckel still being a swinging gate at LT.
JaxRed
09-01-2015, 01:21 AM
Technically they said 4 weeks from the surgery not 4 weeks of games, so he might be back for Week 3. But Jags are hurting a bit for Week 1 and maybe week 2 games. Missing #1 pick Dante Fowler for the year, missing Julius Thomas our premier Free Agent signing, probably missing our #2 pick from last year (WR Lee), missing our defensive MVP from last year (Marks), and Branch has also gone down on DL and will miss 4 games or so.
But I disagree on the OL and Blake. Despite a couple obvious pancakes of Joeckel, the line has given him ample time to throw, he's only been sacked once and the coaches all seem to think the line is getting better. I'm much more worried about DL than OL, so far.
Kingspoint
09-01-2015, 02:40 AM
Wisniewski is a huge upgrade over Bowenko at Center.
Joeckel is improved, but it's going to be a long time (at least another year) before he stops being a bottom-10 LT (among the 28 or so that will be qualified), specifically concerning pass protection, which is what his main job is....to protect Bortles' blindside.
Beadles (LG) is average in a weird sort of way. Beadles is excellent at Pass-Blocking, but poor at Run-Blocking. His backup, 3rd round pick, A.J. Cann, is a Rookie. They recognize they need someone who can be good at both.
Their new RT, Parnell, whom they plucked from the Cowboy's plethora of quality O-Linemen, had his first significant snaps last year after six years in the league. He showed really well in both pass protection and run-blocking, but was limited to 388 snaps. With that number ready to nearly double, the hope is that it translates to average, or above average play. His backup, Pasztor, is a 3-year UDFA who played full-time Wk5-Wk13 last season. He was poor across the board his first four games, but settled in and was a decent player the last four games, so if Parnell should falter, they can try Pasztor at the position.
Their best O-Lineman, Brandon Lindner, is a stud at RG. was the 6th ranked RG overall, per PFF and it's #2 ranked RG in pass protection.
A lot of Bortles' problems he causes himself by just not getting rid of the ball. I really like Bortles, and still believe he is the 2nd best QB from that draft after Bridgewater. I thought Bortles was the only one worthy of a 1st round pick, but was clearly wrong as Bridgewater is a stud, and should lead the Vikings into the playoffs this season, and for many seasons to come.
I'm bummed about all of the injuries to the Jags, as I really wanted to see them succeed.
Harbor received 100+ targets for a couple of seasons in Miami. He can handle the workload as a Receiver.
JaxRed
09-01-2015, 06:21 PM
A couple follows ups.
Again I guess we'll agree to disagree because I've not seen a problem with Bortles not getting rid of the ball in time this year. Thomas is having the surgery and they are hopeful he will miss just 3 games.
Yesterday the Jags traded their longest tenured Jaguar, Placekicker Josh Scobee. Josh was a fan favorite
And Shad Khan shows once again why he is a great owner. In year one they rebuilt the locker room facilities into possibly the best in the league, year 2 he put up the world's biggest video boards and a swimming pool in Everbank field. This year not much happened, but today he announced that the are building an indoor practice facility next to the stadium that will roughly cost 30 million. It will be ready next training camp. Details to be announced in a couple weeks.

Jags start season at home against Carolina tomorrow. It's a winnable game if the Jags play well. So, losing/playing poorly would be a bad sign. If they are going to have a halfway decent season. (7-9 or better) then this should be one of the wins.
They are moderately healthy. We will be missing Marquise Lee (referred to by his OC as a Albino Tiger, because you never see him), our top FA acquisition in TE Julius Thomas, and last year's best defensive player in Marks. All are expected back within a month. For this game RB Toby Gerheart is a game time decision.
The off-season has been one of building up hope based on the draft, Free Agency, and expected improvement in Blake Bortles. Would hate to see that hope crushed in game 1.

Don't place too much value in Game 1 for any NFL team. It 's much more telling what happens in Game 2, as there's now film on all 32 teams.
How each team handles the adjustments that Defenses and Offenses get to make to each other in Game 2 is far more indicative of how their season will go than the results of Game 1.

The win over Miami was very encouraging. Was it the prettiest win ever? No. But it was a game that could have been easily lost, and in the past the Jags found a way to lose those games. Another thing that was encouraging was that the very things that cost us the first game were fixed in the second. Blake Bortles threw a killer pick six game 1, game 2 had 2 TD's and no interceptions. Game 1 had all kinds of drops, especially from our top receiver Allen Robinson. Game 2 Robin caught everything. Only Greene had an issue with drops. Our O-Line (in combo with Bortles) gave up 5 sacks game 1, no sacks game 2. Our new kicker missed an extra point and field goal game 1, game 2 he nails a 58 yarder at halftime and wins game with 28 yarder.
This marks our first September win since 2012 and the first time we have been at .500 since 2011. So to say this was welcome/needed in Jax is an understatement.
Unfortunately, the next game is a road trip into New England, so you hope for a decent showing and no injuries heading into the game after that which is perennial Div Champ Indy, who will come into that game at best 1-2. A win over Indy could really mean big things. But first....we have to take on Patriots. So let's show we are not total doormats and put up a fight.

I always try to wait a day or two to post a reaction so as to not over-react. It was a bad loss. Defensively we could do nothing. They scored every time they touched the ball, and offensively we could not get much going and Bortles threw another costly interception.
The Jags are lucky in that the rest of the division has been bad also. All teams are 1-2. The key thing for the Jags to find out is: "If they are moderately healthy, are they decent?". We don't know that yet. They've only had one season-ending injury but it was to our 1st round pick. All the rest are in the 3-4 game variety, but there are a lot of them. The Jags have not had any healthy scratches the last 2 weeks. The scratches are all injured and a few of the guys on the active squad are far from 100%.
So here's the injury status:
2015 1st round pick Dante Fowler on IR
2014 Defensive MVP SenDerrick Marks will practice this week but probably not ready to play
Top FA acquisition Julius Thomas - will practice this week but probably not ready to play
DE Andre Branch will start practicing this week. 50/50 for game.
None of the above has played any game time this year
Also expected to be out for this weeks game:
RB Denard Robinson
CB Dwayne Gratz
They have a collection of other guys that are day-to-day. Especially in the secondary.
It kind of looks like Week 5 is when we start really getting healthy (pending new injuries)

Again another fews days to decompress after a loss. And this one hurt a lot because I truly think we were the better team on the field against the Colts and Hasselback. Yet they failed to close the deal. Most notably by crossing the 50 yard line 6 times in the second half and overtime yet coming away with 0 points Included in that is numerous field goal misses by our rookie kicker.
The Jags still have a stretch coming up where they could have a nice run (if they get healthy). Tampa Bay this week, Houston next. Winnable games.....just gotta actually win...

The rest of the team is slowly getting healthy. Julius Thomas was activated for Week 5.
Robinson and Hurns were graded out as the two best Receivers for Week 5 in the NFL per PFF.
Wide receivers: Allen Hurns, Jaguars (+2.7) and Allen Robinson, Jaguars (+2.6)
It isn’t all bad in Jacksonville. Both their young receivers are showing signs of developing into reliable targets for their rapidly improving quarterback.

The Jags Sunday loss to Tampa was a gut wrencher around here. TB rolled all over our defense. It was the first time I thought that Gus might actually be fired the next day. Most people think if it happens it would be after the London game against Buffalo in 2 weeks. We always have a bye after the London game. I don't want to see Gus fired. I want to see 1 or 2 wins in the next 2 weeks.
We're once again in a battle for 'Worst Team in the NFL' this week when we play the Texans.
Kingspoint had it right. We're slowly getting healthy. Sometimes it's 2 steps forward and one step back. Julius Thomas played a little bit last week, and I suspect he'll be more of a factor this week. Pozluzney was a game time decision last week, and he's not practicing so far this week, but I suspect he'll be a go. And it appears we get SenDerrick Marks back this week for at least a few snaps.
Once again it looks on paper like a game that COULD be a win.

How's Blake Bortles looking to you, Jax?
Pretty good. He still makes some mistakes. At last twice last week he missed obviously wide open receivers at crucial times. But from a guy who was statistically the worst QB in the league last year and was 11-17 TD's to interceptions, you now have a guy who is 10-4 on TD's/INTS and his best games are his most recent.
There seems to be general consensus that we have our franchise QB for next 10 years or so.

Going into last week, Bortles was one of only three QB's who had over 300 yards throwing on passes that went 20 yards or more beyond the LOS. The other two were Dalton and Rodgers, and all three actually had over 400 yards throwing passes that went 20 yards or more beyond the LOS.
Bortles sprain in his AC joint is probably going to effect his deep throw more than anything. Robinson's deep routes won't be as effective as a result this week. But, Julius Thomas should be utilized underneath quite a bit more. The TD's that Hurns have scored each of the last three games (Robinson caught two of the four last week himself), should begin to go away as Redzone target Thomas begins taking away opportunities from Hurns. It's a good thing, though, as Thomas is unstoppable around the goal-line. (see Eifert/Gronk)
The O-Line for Jacksonville is blocking great this year, and T. J. Yeldon is on his way towards 1330+ yards Rushing (assuming his groin injury doesn't linger for multiple weeks).
BTW, Gus Bradley isn't going anywhere. Whatever fans/media personnel are suggesting such a thing have no long-term vision ability. He's not only doing just fine, but will eventually work this Defense into a Top-10 force from year to year. They don't have an owner who "reacts", but will give this HC the five years he deserves to get things done. They were coming from the very bottom of the talent level before Bradley got there. Have to bring in the personnel and have it be healthy before he can do his work. In the meantime, he needs to institute a culture of hard work and discipline (doing what's asked of you). I would say that he's done that. I don't hear negative stuff coming out of that environment.

JaxRed and other Jaguars' fans, what do you think of these comments made by Rotoworld regarding HC Gus Bradley? Personally, I think he's had so many injuries to have had to deal with the last two seasons that it's totally unreasonable to make judgements about him "grasping at straws" at this point, as if he's panicking in order to try to find a way to save his job. I feel that his job is secure for this season, at the least, has plenty of time to get a good season put together for this year, and will receive a fair evaluation at the end of the season before any major decision, such as a Head Coaching change, would take place. I hope Bradley feels comfortable enough that he can be looking at 2016 as a realistic target date for making the playoffs and can use this season to find out which players need to be developed so that the next couple of seasons are maximized.
From Rotoworld w/ Rotoworld comments:
Jaguars CB Davon House has been demoted to nickel back.
House drew the unenviable task of shadowing DeAndre Hopkins last week, a matchup in which he predictably struggled. It was questionable for the Jaguars to put House in that position in the first place, but it is ridiculous to bench him for struggling against one of the best receivers in the league. Coach Gus Bradley appears to be grasping at straws.

I certainly want Bradley (and GM Caldwell) to succeed. Both are the kind of men you want representing your city/franchise. That said, the slope of improvement has been gradual. I personally thought a loss to Buffalo followed by a bye week might mean the end for Gus. But it certainly seems Shad Khan is going to ride this train the rest of the season and maybe into next year. Picking up 4 wins in the next 10 games would sure make that argument easier to make.

Jags fans...are you ready for the 2nd half?
The Division is there for the taking.
The Defense has been stronger each of the last two seasons during the 2nd half, and there's no reason to believe that this year will be any different. Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson are playing lights out right now. Julius Thomas is fully recovered. Bortles has been throwing the deep ball as well as any QB in the NFL this season. The O-Line is blocking well in the run game and opening up holes for Yeldon to get through.
There's no reason why the Jaguars can't win the Division and make the playoffs this season. They should be in it with two weeks to go and have semi-control over their own destiny...with maybe a little help the last week or two if they win out those games.

They certainly have a chance if they start getting their act together. The health has finally come together. Every player that is not on IR was able to practice today. They looked like they were a better team. After that game coupled with the Colts win against Denver, every one said, "ok dreams about backing into the playoffs are over".
But then Luck lacerates his kidney and people start saying "If they can just get over the hump", there's still a chance...".
Tomorrow in Baltimore is another hump.

Bortles had a pretty bad game, and the field goal kicker missed a VERY short field goal leaving the Jags, with essentially no chance. A snap with one second left, Bortles falls down but get up only to be wrapped and taken down by Elvis Dumerville as the final clock expires..........................
and then the miracle....... Dumerville had twisted Bortles down by his face mask
With time expired because the game can't end on a defensive penalty, Jason Myers the kicker from Maris who knew if he missed this kick was off the team, lined up a 53 yarder and nails it!!

Jags play SD, and they are beat up and have lost 6 in a row. Jags are actually favored for the first time in a long time. Hopefully they are healthy after 10 days off and out a W on the boards.

Been a couple weeks since I posted. A couple close losses. Seems like the story every time. The Jags are just a hair away from being a winning team. Although the are technically still in the hunt for the Division, especially playing the Colts at home today, my mind has started looking towards free agency and the draft.
The most critical thing for this (and most teams) is finding a franchise QB, and every week that goes by seems to solidify the thought that the Jags found their guy in Bortles. And we seems to be fairly well set at WR and RB. So improving the defense and maybe shoring up the OL would seem to be the order of the day.

Allen Robinson is amazing, so that's a plus this year.

That was a little better.

Well, last week the Jags shook off all their demons and destroyed the Colts last week 51-16. Strange game..... in many ways the game was much closer than this. We actually trailed at halftime 13-10 , and at the 2 minute warning in the first half it was 13-3 Colts and they had the ball.
Obviously the second half was all Jags, but even then it was like the football gods were paying us back for all the inexplicably bad calls/things that have gone against the Jags in recent years. Every call that the Refs could have made against Jags (and there were several) were not made. Every play that could have been a disaster was instead a gem. And things steamrolled, a couple times the Colts were forced to go for it on 4th down and were stopped which led to Jax scores.....
So setting aside how big the blowout was.... it's obvious to most here that the Jags are ascending. We are at 5 wins with 3 games to go. We won 3 last year. Since week 5 the Jags have scored more points than anyone in the NFL. Bortles looks better every game. We've only lost 3 games all year by more then a touchdown and 2 of those were to Carolina and New England. Our kicker has cost us 2 games.
We are one game out with 3 to play, but the odds are still bad for Jags to make playoffs. Tie breakers don't favor them so basically Jags have to win out and Titans have to beat both Indy and Texans in last 3 weeks. It can happen but it's not likely. You almost wonder if it's worth it. Right now Jags pick 9th, if they win 2 of three and end up 6-9 they probably be around 14. If they sneak into playoffs at 8-8 they will pick 20th at best.
But will be yet another interesting off-season. Besides the draft, we get our 2015 #1 pick who never played a down for us, and we have a ton of cap room, and now it's more likely that top players will consider us in Free Agency. The Defense will be the top priority.

I'm guessing 2016 is a make it or break it year for Gus Bradley and the Jags. They have plenty of talent on offense (Bortles, Yeldon, Hurns, Robinson, Thomas) who, in theory, should be even better next year. Get some more talent on defense (Fowler is a nice bonus) and they could be a real contender. If they disappoint, Bradley is likely axed.

That's the feeling around town also.

After the ugly performance (by the defense) against N.O., there was at least some speculation that Gus Bradley's job might be in jeopardy after all, but he quelled that talk by annoucing Gus was staying for next year (his last year on contract).
General consensus is that bar is raised for next year to at least .500, and most people see to think he was okaying a loss this weekend to the Texans. We stand at #6 for draft selection heading into the game. It's January..... we started talking draft position about mid Oct in 2014.
