Once Gordon comes back for the Royals and they slide Zobrist into 2B that line up is going to be pretty scary

Iggy escapes danger after what looked like would be an easy inning. Two quick outs but a HBP of Cain, a single by Hosmer, and a 3-0 count on Salvador Perez and Iglesias wiggles out with help from Byrd in left with a running grab.

Can't help but rooting for the Reds when I'm watching them play. Especially big keys to the future like Iggy and Geno.

That year (2012) that the Reds paid Madson $6 million, and he pitched zero games for us, we ended up making Chapman our closer. If Madson hadn't gotten hurt, it's entirely possible that Chapman might have been moved to the rotation, dramatically changing Reds history....

Chapman WAS in the rotation if not for the injury. He was starting all spring and was DOMINATING. Showing off his slider that most had but rarely seen and his changeup. It kills me a little everytime I think about what could have been.

2-0 with 17 ip (4 starts) 17 hits, 2 walks, 18 k's, 1.12 whip and 2.12 era.

You're seeing one of the multiple reasons why Chapman would have failed as a starter. Unless he's throwing 100+ he's not particularly effective. You're seeing another, his total inability to hold runners on.

Totally disagree. Today is rust. Plain and simple. He's not able to locate his FB tonight. So he's behind in the count. His slider isn't breaking as sharply and he's not locating it either. His ability to hold runners would increase exponentially as he throws more innings. When he's pitching one inning only and nobody ever reaches first base but once a month...it's kinda hard to practice that stuff. Don't get me wrong, ignoring Cain was totally on Aroldis there. But throwing 95-98 with his stride and movement, his slider thrown more often and his changeup worked into the equation too...sorry, disagree completely.

I doubt Price's current concern is keeping Chapman sharp. Doesn't seem like the major priority right now.

Frankly, I hope Chapman pitches about once a week from here on in. I don't care if he pitches at all as the season winds down. Save his arm, avoid injuries, then trade him this winter.

Not giving Chapman steady work lowers his trade value. Best way to keep his trade value up, is to make sure he gets regular work.

That said, might as well fold up for the winter if they don't play their best players. Gotta play to win, even at this stage.

If he were able to throw his slider for a strike consistently, then he'd be a no-brainer starter. He could still dominate with less than a 100 mph fastball. The problem is and always has been though, he doesn't throw it for a strike consistently.

I seldom disagree twice, but I do here.

1. There is no need to have Chapman prove himself to keep up his trade value. The entire baseball world knows Chapman's work. Just keep him healthy.

2. At this point, Chapman's main role is trade bait IMO. They don't have to sit every player. Everyone isn't prime trade bait. Chapman's next big outing will be the Winter Meetings. Use him lightly.

Maybe. But there are a few facts we all know.

If your trade bait gets hurt, he's not worth much.

If your record is worse you get a higher draft choice.

If you sit veterans, you can use kids who need the work and exposure.

I'd like to see the Reds win now, but I'm much more concerned with loading the team up with talent for a future pennant run. And developing that talent.

Works two ways. If Frazier knows he made the tag and then goes lunging at the runner for a 2nd tag, the ump (and possibly replay officials) might see that as you admiting you missed him.

Despite all of this, Chapman's slider was even better. As calculated by Fangraphs, Chapman's slider was 3.10 runs above average per 100 pitches compared to his fastball which was 1.73.

It's not always the manager's fault. Players should be held accountable when they make mistakes. When Hoover gives up a HR,is it Price's fault or Hoover's for throwing a bad pitch? I know fans don't like blaming their favorite players but they do make mistakes and it's nobody's fault but their own.

But many posters, Welsh, and I am sure others pointed out, before the HR, that Chapman would be rusty, and less effective due to his long layoff. The long layoff is on Price, and as expected Chapman was rusty and less effective. This is an easy one to put on the manager.
