View Full Version : 9/2/2015 Reds at Cubbies Afternoon Baseball

We have afternoon baseball at Wrigley Field today. That does not happen very often anymore. They used to play them all in the afternoon. I would watch a game in the afternoon on WGN and one at night on WTBS everyday during the season. For me that was near baseball heaven.
The Great Schu makes another appearance in LF for our pleasure. Also the Pena HR watch is offically on. Will he hit one before the season ends in another month?

I can't blame the Reds for not playing him in Wrigley Field. That's tough to play LF for a veteran. But DuVall should be in there Friday night for the rest of the season.

Not sure exactly how to express this -- but this whole Duvall to LF thing sounds like a forced, desperate move to find anybody who can fill LF in 2016.

The guy is a corner infielder. I can understand having him learn the outfield too. But why was it necessary to completely switch his position the minute he came over to the new team.

He didn't hit at AAA for the Reds, I'd guess this whole position switch had a role. He has the winter to learn LF. Depth behind Frazier and Votto are important goals for the future too. They can rest a few games in September with Duvall playing his comfortable positions.

Not sure this is particularly clear, but I would have handled him differently.

I get that, but I don't think that the Reds see him as the LF in '16, or i am sincerley hoping they don't. I think if they can use a power bat to start part time there, 1B and 3B that's a positive. I feel this season would be as good a tie as any to get him some practice there.

IIRC if a reliever is ineffective but in line for the win, the official scorer can designate another reliever for the win but I do not think it can be the starter.

Edit: it would have to go to a subsequent reliever.

Rule 10.17(c) states:

The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.

Rule 10.17(c) Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

So Chapman could be awarded the win but not Iglesias. It would seem that a closer would be happier with a save come arbitration time than a win so I doubt anyone on the Reds would ever argue for the win to go to Aroldis.

However, a pitcher cannot get a win and a save and since Chapman came into the game in a save situation, he can't get the W. Also, while Hoover did allow the game to be tied, he did get 3 outs so I don't know about the ineffective part.

I was working on the assumption that he would be awarded the win instead of the save rather than his getting both. Save rule says he can't get the win but does not appear to give a save as preferred by rule over a win.

Well, there's no choice in the situation. He came in the game in a save situation and completed the game with the Reds still having the lead. He has to get the save and since Iggy was ineligible for the win, Hoover gets it. It's a vulture win but it's a win nonetheless. The official scorer has no discretion in this case.
