Hopefully everybody has better things to do than sit inside on a beautiful Saturday afternoon but here is the lineup for game one:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/COJdnIIWsAE2xzc.jpg

For those who question Suarez after Skip, take a gander on Suarez's splits by spot in the order (requisite small sample warning)
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=suareeu01&year=&t=b

Short version is his OPS is 350 points higher in the 7 slot.

I assume we can use this one thread for both games today.

Storms later?

Oktoberfest IIRC has always in Cincinnati held in September: Oktoberfest Zinzinnati will be 2 weeks and the Reds are not in town, hence celebrating this weekend.

Some very good commentary by Chris Welsh today.

1. Noted how Bruce is prone to easy fly ball outs to LF.

2. Noted that Reds need to structure an offense that takes advantage of Votto's skills. Instead of critiquing Votto, try to take advantage of his rare abilities.

In all honesty, Skip is a very earnest and gritty player. Looks fierce at the plate, has an intense look on his face at all times, takes violent practice swings, and just generally looks like a ballplayer ought to look like to us old farts.

But he's really really bad. He can't hit, he can't field, and he's just bleeping boat anchor to the team. Write him a big check, pay him off, thank him for his service, and send him the eff home.

How so? I'm being consistent. I love seeing guys like Suarez, Votto, BP, et al do well. But, yes, I want the 2015 Reds to lose as many games as possible down the stretch so we have the best draft pick possible next June.

That being said, I like John Lamb and want to see him get his first win. That's the only part of this I didn't like. But I love seeing Suarez, etc play well, but the Reds still lose during this lost season. Wins do us no good right now when talking about the long-term future of this franchise. Don't be so caught up in instant gratification. Look at the big picture.

It also ticked me off that Schumaker was batting ahead of Suarez in the lineup. Which contradicts my main point, but I just can't get on board with Bryan Price's stupidity there (even though it might help the Reds' draft position). How in the world does Skippy bat ahead of Suarez in the lineup?

To come home after a long week and see flipping Skipelodean batting 6th and ahead of Suarez is bad but to watch him come up with 2 outs and 3 hit Suarez on deck with runners on and that gritacious ignoranamous is in a 2-0 count and he swings at a ball that nearly hit him in the knee. Quit trying to be the flipping hero and take a gritty and selfish walk. Let a legitimate player try to tie it or be the hero.

I hate that he is on this team and I hate how much he plays for this team. Quit being a pansy and out Duval in LF, just do it.....what might happen? Cannot be worse.....ooh maybe he stinks it up and gets his feelz hurt and realizes he can't play it.....be nice to know. We KNOW...we g d know Skip CANNOT play ANYWHERE (Thom voice through a megaphone)....but we keep sending him out there. He should be the last guy off the bench and used in the 12th inning to PH and then be the pitcher after he pinch hits.

I have nothing against him....nada....but I hate anyone who has any part of the decision to play him. I hate their guts and livers.

My dog may never come out from underneath the bed after watching him swing at that terrible 2-0 pitch.

I look forward to seeing acclaimed actor Robert Duvall in LF today.

At 84, he will be a faster, better fielder than Skip.

LaMarre! YES!

Anyone else missing Billy? Seeing Bourgeois being afraid of the wall and botching that "double" from Lind was high comedy. Billy would have caught that ball with ease. And it's not like Bourgeois is an upgrade offensively (at least not much, and he's much older than Billy).

Looking forward to getting Billy back and hopefully he will finish the 2015 season strong.

High fly ball hit directly at you with a bright sun and high sky....that's not an easy catch for anybody. I like Billy's odds better, but lets not act like that's an easy can o' corn either.

Skip like 1995 NLCS Reggie Sanders.

No matter where you hide him, he gets exposed at absolutely the worst time.

Sanders had a .975 OPS that year, and a 6.6 WAR. His OBA was .397. He made the all star team, and was 6th in the NL in MVP voting.

Now, you are correct, he had a brutal NLCS, but that's really simply a bad, small sample size of a player had a truly elite year.

Skip isn't that player.

Sampson looking increasingly lousy. First pitch lined into the gap, held to a single by LaMarre. Next batter crushes one to center but LaMarre tracks it down. Gennett thrown out trying to steal 2nd by Pena. Now a walk to Lind.

Santana beats out an infield single despite a pretty behind the back toss from BP. Sampson walks some dude named Shane Peterson to load them up.

Sampson is just not a major league starting pitcher right now.

Reds can't even let me enjoy Duvall's HR for a minute before sending up Skippy and reminding me of how he helped lose the first game and blow up Lamb's line.

And of course the excellent pinch hitter he is, he strikes out on a fastball down the middle.

Chuckie
09-05-2015, 10:54 PM
Seriously, I'm probably higher on Duvall than most. Hitting 30 HRs at the Triple-A level is not easy, period. I don't care if 26 of them came in the hitter-friendly PCL. I think Duvall could be a nice piece of the puzzle moving forward. Not a star, or even an everyday starter, but a good bench player that can also be a solid spot starter. Good to see him make a good first impression with the Reds.

This is exactly the stuff I'm talking about, boys! Duvall hitting HRs? Good. The Reds losing and enhancing their draft pick? Also good.

Chuckie

WVRedsFan

I keep beating a dead horse, but did Price even think this lineup had a chance from the beginning? That said, Duvall impresses me (even though I only listened to the game--the TV feel was blacked out for some reason. Sampson is not ready for prime time and Hoover still, well, sucks--his early season success is a mirage. His ERA has jumped 30 points in the last two weeks. Skip continues to play for some unknown reason and batting ahead of the hot Suarez.

I don't care about the draft position because that is a hope and a prayer and I continue to say that finishing last is the ultimate disgrace.

Tom Servo
09-05-2015, 11:09 PM
Duvall showed why he needs to be getting 3-4 PAs a game for the rest of the year. Maybe he's just a bench bat, maybe he's just organizational depth, but there's a chance that he can be a productive big league hitter. And that is worth exploring over giving Skippy, Boesch, and Bourgeois the playing time.

Exactly. If Skippy gets one more start over Duvall this season ... that's one too many.
