Why on earth would the Pirates do a sac bunt with their 2 hitter in the first inning??????????????????????????????????? Against a rookie with a 6+ ERA??????????????????????????????

I have been driven nuts by the Reds doing this over the past three years (though I don't remember it this year) so it is nice to see others do something equally stupid.

I don't really know Joe Price, but I imagine he'd be a better manager than Bryan Price.

Price could have had a much better career, but the Reds hurt it by making him a reliever at first, because GM Dick Wagner didn't acquire a lefty reliever for the team, Price was one of the best lefty arms the Reds developed in the '80's, but they wasted him in the pen for years. Kinda reminds you of what the Reds did with another lefty power arm.

Well I'm not saying you just gift-wrap him a bullpen spot, but I think he can compete for one. The walks are definitely an issue, but they aren't what has been holding him back as an effective pitcher so far with the Reds, it's the ball getting hammered all around and out of the park.

In 607 innings career-wise (I believe only minors) Sampson has allowed 302 walks.

In the minors this year he had 82.2 innings and 46 walks.

In the majors 2015 before tonight he had 31 innings and 16 walks.

Tonight is one five inning stint so far. But this is a significant problem. And usually when a pitcher is that walk prone it indicates a greater command issue.

Only in one of those seasons in the minor was he used in relief. He's not a starter, not at the big league level. But he has a live arm and a good curve. Try him in the pen. You've been one of the biggest proponents of overhauling the bullpen with the Reds plethora of starters.
