"He doesn't make outs."

No, his approach tends to not bring the end of the inning closer, and thus the end of the scoring opportunity, to an end. Good observation, Chris.

I've been trying to figure out who John Lamb reminds me of, and I just figured it out:

It is September 21, and the Reds have only a four-man bench. (Five, if you count Peña, who can only PH.) I would add a couple of position players, if for no other reason than to have some depth. They could call up Waldrop and Skipworth, both of whom are already on the 40-man roster. They could also put Negrón on the 60-day DL and purchase the contract of Falu.

Again, I'm not suggesting that these are players who need to see any significant action. I'm just saying that having only four available players on the bench in September is embarrassing.

He had a good stretch when he didn't give up any home runs, but I just don't like the peripherals. Still too many walks, and the strikeouts have gone way down. And the HR/9 eventually normalized, and the H/9 might not be done normalizing either if tonight is any indication.

I don't disagree. But going into September he was 6-0 with a 1.77 era with a very solid WHIP as well. You can point to any peripherals you want, but those are EXCELLENT results for anybody. Prior to this month, he would've had to have gotten some consideration for comeback player of the year.

I know the game meant nothing, but I just hate to see after seeing what he has done lately (ERA up over 50 points from 1.80 to 2.30) in few innings trusting him in a one-run game. Reds lose, but it was an easy prediction. September is 5 innings, five hits, five runs, five walks, and 8 K's. ERA? 8.84, and that was before tonight. Hoover has been inconsistent to just bad for the last couple of months, since the all star break he has pitched as well as he did last season!

Wrong. Heck, just looking month to month (which is a poor way to break it down IMO...but it's easy).

April (8.2 ip / 5.19 era) - one bad game in Milw. did him in here.
May (12.0 ip / 0.00 era)
June (14.2 ip / 0.61 era)
July(10.0 ip / 3.60 era) - 2 bad outings, 8 scoreless games
Aug (11.2 ip / 0.77 era) - 1 solo HR only run all month
Sept (5.1 ip / 8.44 era) - not counting tonight

Outside of one game in April and 2 back to back games in July he's been fantastic this season...until September.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said they had only a four-man bench. Barnhart, DeJesus, Schumaker, and Boesch. (Peña is available only as a PH.)

Negrón, Hamilton, and LaMarre are unavailable due to injury.

Oh. Negron's out too? I missed both of those DL's.

He obviously is trending downward (Hoover), but you can use statistics all you want about JJ to prove he is good, but lately you can use statistics to prove you can't trust him in a close game. It's kind of like, "it's not what you've done for me, but what haveyou done for me lately?"

Don't get me wrong. I don't trust him either. I thought he should've been dealt at the trade deadline when he was at his highest value because I fully expected him to fall off a cliff (same as Frazier).

But guys are saying he's garbage and that he's been bad this year. And that's simply not true. I don't want to see him on the club moving forward but I also have to acknowledge that up until September he's had a VERY nice season. This month has been a dumpster fire for sure.

Technically, neither is on the DL, though Negrón is out for the year. He separated his shoulder and tore his labrum in his left (non-throwing) arm on a diving catch in LF the first night he returned from Louisville. I think they said 6-8 months.

Hamilton and LaMarre are out indefinitely.

That's right. I'd forgotten about that diving catch by Negron. But they didn't DL him? LOL. Whatever.

Didn't get why they didn't DL Negron and call up somebody like Falu, like you said. Now guys have dropped like flies and the Reds have no bench despite being able to carry 40 freakin guys.

No, with the 40-man roster in effect for September, there is no need to disable him unless they want to use his roster spot for someone who isn't currently on the 40-man roster (like Falu or Chang), in which case they would put him on the 60-day DL.

But it underscores the lack of defensive depth on the current roster when you consider that Hamilton, LaMarre, and Negrón are the three best defensive CF's on the team. (Bourgeois is capable, as well.)

As I mentioned, I would call up Waldrop and Skipworth for no other reason than they are both on the 40-man roster and have a pulse. I would also put Negrón on the 60-day DL and purchase the contract of Falu. With the decision to shut down Hamilton for the year, I would probably put him on the 60-day DL too and purchase the contract of Ray Chang, just to reward him for being a solid organizational player.

But hey, we've got 18 pitchers though!

He had a fantastic four months, but if I were in charge (and thank God I'm not), he would be a mop-up pitcher. With only a few games to go, it shouldn't be a problem.

may be old news, but Billy is having surgery and is out for the duration. I know they don't want to start the clock on anyone, but there is 12 or 13 games left and I doubt they can be three players short to play the outfield.

No reason not to put a couple of these injured guys on the 60 day DL and open up spots to bring people to the bench. Just have some warm bodies anyway. Reds are so cheap its pathetic.
I didn't watch any of this game. Sounded like a good game from Lamb. Too bad it was wasted with no run support. But at this point you just want to see some improvement from these young starters. Lamb has been getting better so there is some hope with him.
