So that Houston loss is killer, in that New England clinches the 1 seed with a win because of the common opponent record.

Texans:
Patriots 1-0, Bengals 0-1
Steelers:
Patriots 1-0, Bengals 1-1
Broncos:
Patriots 0-1, Bengals 1-0*
Bills:
Patriots 2-0, Bengals 1-0

Record:
Patriots 4-1
Bengals 3-2 (If they beat Denver)

I'm glad their putting his long term mental health ahead of any football game.

The Bengals drafted 2 TEs in the most recent draft. Kroft is playing very well and he'll hold down the fort with Hewitt. Uzomah, though, is said to possibly be the best of the bunch, just very raw.

A few years ago the Bengals went into Pittsburgh and played a win or go home game. That IMO was more important than this game.

Given the list of free agents to be, this might be the team's best shot at winning it all, even with the Dalton injury. I think it's as big as they get.

Yes, that Pittsburgh game was big, but I'm with you here.

Best case scenario is that AJ comes out and takes the Broncos apart. The Steelers had a field day picking on Harris and Roby. Sanu and Jones can take care of that. Green will be battling Talib all day, and I am betting that AJ is under strict instructions not to throw the ball that way unless Green is obviously open. Getting healthy on offense (minus Dennard :( ) is going to be a boon, obviously. We'll see how it all falls into place.

I think that is overplayed a little bit. I also think that the Bengals have done a good job of creating depth within their team. The trouble spots IMO are WR where both Jones and Sanu are free agents, and the secondary where key contributors are UFA's. I do think the Bengals will bring Jones back as well as one safety. But the core of the team, is signed and ok going forward.

The Bengals generally sign their own, they will lose some guys this offseason, but it's not going to be a mass exodus.

Paul Dehner is saying Eifert is still in the protocol but hasn't officially been ruled out. I don't think he's going to play, but just saying it's not official yet according to him.

This game is huge, but I'd rather be conservative with injuries and have everyone back in the playoffs, in the end.

I dunno. Can't think of a clearly bigger regular season game in the Lewis era.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but good chance Geno's field time is limited Monday night as well: http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/cincinnati-bengals-geno-atkins-sickle-cell-trait-denver-122215

IIRC, last time they were in Denver he played 20 some snaps.

I forgot about Atkins. That stinks.

The altitude is a huge advantage for the Broncos. I live in Denver now and it takes months to get used to the altitude. Simple tasks like walking up a flight of stairs will leave you out of breath. The Broncos should never lose at home with that advantage.

Bob Sheed
12-24-2015, 11:32 AM
So Eifert out. Atkins limited.

They need Eifert and Green at full health to really be a threat on offense. Just one or the other hasn't been enough, for some reason. Not good.

They need to pressure Osweiler, otherwise he will carve the Bengals up. The Bengals get zero pressure without Atkins. Not good.

Plus the usual Denver home air advantage.

This one doesn't look good at all, but that's why they play em anyway...who knows? That's also why they should have won against the Texans...still can't believe they lost that one.

I agree. I predict a 16-9 loss. I just don't see how they'll be able to move the ball much. AJ will have to throw a decent amount to win because they're running game is pretty weak. My biggest gripe about last week was how the Bengals had 8-9 in the box and tried to run. So predictable. I think if they spread it out more they'd at least have a chance for a 5-yard run.

I really hope they find a way to win. So few times in my lifetime have they won a game like this. If the defense plays lights out and the team is +2 in turnovers they could ruin my prediction.

They would beat the Bengals in a football game without Andy Dalton.

They may even have a 50-50 shot of beating them with Dalton because Marvin Lewis can't game plan.

He'd run the ball 30 times just because.

And throw a 20 yard pass on 3rd and 2.

The one thing, and I agree it's not objective, is that a good team on the verge of greatness can use those things as motivators; turn the negatives into positives. If the Bengals have it in them to be great, that's what will happen. If not, well, they deserve to face the Steelers in 2 weeks.

Marvin Lewis is 65-44-1 since 2009 with five playoff appearances in six years...about to to be six in seven years, and there are really people saying he can't gameplan? Seriously, the facts contradict that loose assertion. In the NFL, a league where the talent level is arguably as tight across the board as any other sport and point spreads rarely are more than a touchdown apart, that sort of record speaks for itself.

Nevermind that the actual "gameplanning" is mostly up to the coordinators. To whatever influence Lewis has on gameplanning, the numbers suggest he's done a mighty fine job of it.

Can a fan take an honest look at his team?

Should all the Reds fans look at that Todd Frazier trade and pipe down because the Reds have been to the playoffs recently?

Should we all thank our stars for Dusty Baker? Or did his team's do well in spite of him because of the talent?

Look- there is a tendency to settle for good enough. I don't possess that tendency.

Zero playoff wins, lower seedlings than they could have had...

And some people say they are just fine.

I'm happy, not thrilled.

It sounds like whenever you make an assertion that is diminished or outright contradicted by facts, you just fall back on zero playoff wins as if that somehow mitigates every other argument. In this case, you try to make the case Lewis sucks at gameplanning, a fact the 65-44-1 record in the last seven seasons would dispute, and you go right back to "zero playoff wins" as if that's supposed to somehow trump those other 110 games.

You've become a broken record with this 'zero playoff wins' things. It's like we're all supposed to be miserable like you are because despite all this success, the lack of playoff wins is the only thing that matters in every discussion and in everyone's viewing habits.

On a final note: you say you're "happy, not thrilled" with the winning. I'm sorry but I haven't seen a bit of happiness from you. When they were undefeated, you were criticizing everyone for being happy because they had not "beaten anyone" (a fact that we later found to be untrue as we now know the Raiders, Seahawks, Chiefs victories were solid). You haven't shown hardly any enjoyment all year. Some of us do enjoy 11-3 seasons. They're fun to watch. Even if it doesn't manifest itself in a postseason victory, I'm not going to thumb my nose at the season as a whole. We actually are happy with it, I think most of us. I haven't seen much happiness from you. You're grumpy about everything... schedule strength, playcalling, etc. You act like you're trying to make everyone else here as miserable as you are about the Bengals.

The best way to put it is: do I believe that the goal for the Bengals is to win the highest championship in their sport? Yes, absolutely! Is that an incredibly difficult thing to do in any given year? Yes, absolutely! That's the difference between this team now and the teams prior to Lewis-Palmer and Lewis-Dalton eras: those previous teams between 1990 and 2002 weren't constructed to win a championship; they were constructed to make Mike Brown as much profit as possible. I find this group, regardless of their final success this year, to be much more entertaining.

Dom, you built the Steelers into something they are not, that's been my only point. A lot of what you are saying is fair, but some of it just isn't reality. The Bengals beat the Steelers on the road. Pittsburgh probably won't make the playoffs at all. Every time the Bengals face a deficit in a game you declare it over (most memorably vs. Seattle I think.) No matter how well they do you fall back on the playoff record.

And yeah the playoff record sucks. It's awful. But there's nothing the 2015 Bengals can do about the playoff record until a couple of weeks from now, so I don't get the fixation. In the meantime, they've had a great year.

Took 'em a few plays to warm up but the D absolutely manhandled Denver's o-line those last few plays.

Yeah, took about 7 plays to solve the offensive line. This is going to be along game for Denver.

No they didn't?

No. They didn't. Winner of the coin toss since the rule change has gone 33-32, so essentially it's...well, a toss up. So you have to take other factors into account, including how well your offense and their defense is playing, the fact that most drives don't end in touchdowns, etc. Belichick was playing the odds and got burned. When you gamble, that sometimes happens.

Okay offense... slow and methodical. March it right down the field and don't give them any time to come back and tie it up.

Altitude has gotten to the Bengals.

That's no joke. I live here in Denver and its a huge disadvantage for opposing teams to come here and play.

Burning *another* time out.

I hope they get that cleaned up if AJ is going to be the QB in the playoffs.

His miss changed the momentum of the entire game. Would've been 17-0 at the half most likely.
