http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/2016/04/07/thursday-lineup-notes/

A lot of the regulars were missing from the lineup vs. the Phillies. You may recall in Spring Training that manager Bryan Price tipped he would likely rest Devin Mesoraco, Zack Cozart and Billy Hamilton more often because they were coming off surgeries. They would likely play two of every three or three of every four games, at least starting out.

“Billy, I think, would be the best to play today but I wanted to make sure that I got Schebler and Duvall out there together every now and again,” Price said. “This first month will be a month of select days off for those three players. And also it is important for these guys that are going to be spending more time probably coming off the bench get some at-bats early in the season to stay familiar with their swings.”

Brandon Phillips is out of the lineup again because he’s still bothered by a stomach virus. Phillips, as of 10:30 am, was not at the ballpark.

Why wouldn't they have Holt in center and Schebler in left?

I read on Twitter that Price wants to play Schebler and Duvall together some early in the season. Also said he wants to rest Cozart and Mez early in the season on these day games after night. Phillips is still suffering from stomach virus and isn't at the park.

Cannon

Weird. Holt to me just seems like the better player in every aspect to Duvall. I'd rather he get Holt and Schebler playing together -- especially since Schebler is going to be swinging and missing a lot I'd like to see someone with a bit more patience and on base ability in Holt to complement the line-up (plus he's an actual CF).

Ah well, still looking forward to the game! Another exciting win hopefully.

Probably not smart to rest your best defensive players while your top prospect, who needs all the help he can get, is making his big league debut. At least leave him Billy in center. Also, why in the world is Schebler leading off? I dont think he made contact with a pitch till his 4th ab last night.

Playing Schebler and Duvall together occasionally enables both to get more plate appearances than in a straight platoon.

Particularly for Duvall, the righty hitter, facing lefties doesn't provide enough plate appearances.

It does weaken the defense, maybe if the Reds get ahead they will substitute a better defender.

RedTeamGo!

Easy - Joey Votto. Howard expands the strike zone in an attempt to drive in runs. Votto refuses to do so.

He wasn't a multi-millionaire because of the era he played in, but Ed Delahanty, who was also a Phillies first baseman, fell farther. I may be thinking too literally here.

Elam
04-07-2016, 12:52 PM
Phillies have been pummeling the inside part of the plate to Votto early and forcing him to swing at those pitches in or do something atypical and swing outside the zone.

Stephenson lacking the comfort level that Finnegan apparently had yesterday (I didn't see Finnegan live).

I don't think the stuff Robert is showing is his best, maybe he's tentative and trying to avoid control issues.

IMO the key offensive player is Mesoraco this year. With Hamilton, Cozart and Barnhart playing every day the Reds' offense will be too weak IMO. Keep Mes in the lineup and it's a pretty good offense, even sans Frazier.

I dunno I think Holt could be our starting CF not that far into the season. Hamilton just can't hit a baseball and doesn't look like he's improved his approach. Cozart is serviceable. In an ideal world we'd bat this (IMO):

1. Suarez
2. Votto
3. Mesoraco
4. Bruce
5. BP/Schebler

Then some combination of our pitcher/DH and whoever else there is like Holt, Cozart, etc. If Bruce and BP have one of their better years that line-up is way better than anyone out there is predicting to be honest (though I know they'll keep batting Votto 3 and Bruce 5).

Griffey had 3,904 PA as a Red. Bruce is up to 4,610. Kind of sad to remember that Griffey had just 6.5 seasons worth of PA over 9 seasons.

And how many of those were at less than peak performance? :(

Sac bunt makes no sense there.

I've never liked bunting even the pitcher there (1st and 3rd, no out), but since Stephenson appears to be particularly ineffective as a hitter, the chances of him driving in the run are likely so small that at least the sacrifice is better than the K or DP grounder.

Disco should take that spot in a couple of days. He is due to pitch on the 10th. Apparently will be ready.

Possible Reds will bring up somebody for a couple of days until Disco is needed.

A ninth reliever? An extra hitter?

I doubt they will go outside the forty man roster. Why make forty man roster moves for two days?

I doubt they will go for a ninth reliever. I doubt they will stick Peraza on the Reds bench.

Hypothetical: Since Jay Bruce has come out of the gate hitting like his career is on the line (it is) what do the Reds do if he continues this and has the monster year we all know he's been capable of? Didn't Bruce make some significant changes to his swing? The key for him will be not falling back into old habits. I expect the Reds will keep him and activate his option if he's showing signs of sustaining the improvement. However, he might make some team in the AL a very attractive DH/OF target.
