I wonder if there is another team in baseball who has all 3 outfielders batting in the last 3 position player spots? With one of them batting 9th no less? Either the Reds infield is really good, or their outfield is really blah

This is more the result of batting Cozart leadoff.

Yep, if he can be decent, it would be a huge boost to the rotation. It's a nice story too. Top prospect struggles through injuries for years to get a chance to be a big leaguer. Hard not to root for.

Whatever happened to McCutchen's dreds?

Technically, McCutchen (and Cueto, for that matter) didn't have dreadlocks--they were braids.

Jaso has dreads. The Bob Marley kind.

At some point he's going to have to be able to throw something besides a 90 MPH fastball for a strike

Tom Servo
04-10-2016, 01:20 PM
Melville goes from 90 mph fastballs to 92-93 mph, that's better. Now just needs to find the zone.

Kc61
04-10-2016, 01:32 PM
One might say to Mr. Hoover.

That's the way you pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.

You don't groove pitches. You might throw one in the dirt and give up ball two.

Then a good pitch gets the batter.

If you fall behind and walk him, you walk him. Only one run.

Stephenson made a spot start, didn't embarrass himself, and is back in AAA. He has nothing to do with this game where Melville is struggling mightily. You're just trying to get a rise out of people with the "Stephenson isn't good" schtick.

I'm obviously looking past the amount of runs… its baseball. In two innings you can perform poorly but escape if the other team doesn't capitalize. He could have just as easily never made it out alive with the command problems he exhibited. One good swing away from busting that open.

He didn't throw a million pitches, he didn't walk more than 2 batters, and Stephenson holding back his velocity is Melville at his peak velocity.

I have no idea why we are comparing the two, other than to push the "Stephenson sucks" agenda. Stephenson isn't ready right now to be an MLB starter, nobody has argued otherwise.

Melville walked 3 in the 1st. Hasn't walked anyone since. Think he's a bit nervous today? Or is just Robert Stephenson who's allowed to use the nerves excuse? I bet if Stephenson was out there today with the exact same numbers and performance as Melville, he'd be getting praised for "working out of trouble" and "showing his ability to miss bats"

Right, so you admit you think Stephenson sucks and you want everyone to know it, because of one MLB start. Never mind that he averages just a tick under 10.0 K/9 in his minors career, clearly he will never strike anybody out at the major league level.

I know Melville is nervous, I'm a fan of the guy. He hasn't been too good, specifically because of the 1st inning, but he has settled down. He's still not comparable to Stephenson.

Come on guys. Melville is making his debut and is a pitcher who wouldn't even sniff the majors on any other team. No reason to compare him to compare him to Stephenson or Locke. it is what it is and the fact of the matter is that he's allowed one ER through 3 2/3. Did anyone actually expect anything better?I was merely trying to point out a fact and was intentionally staying out of the comparison to others. I'm actually quite impressed he has done as well as he has given his high pitch count; I guess I should have made that clearer.

And you think Stephenson is fab, and want everyone to know it by posting his minor league K rate? Ok.

The double standard for judging Stephenson and judging Melville is obvious. That's what I'm pointing out more than anything. The fact of the matter is Stephenson was largely praised here for that outing on Thursday. Melville? Not so much.

From my vantage point I expected both to perform sub replacement level, and they both arguably have. I'm not really sure what the debate is or should be about other than if they both were to continue pitching in an MLB rotation right now, they would not succeed. Screw the rest of the noise being argued.

I expected more out of Stephenson honestly. I didn't expect Tom Seaver, but I didn't expect Mike LaCoss either. I didn't even get a flash of potential greatness.

Stephenson was praised because he didn't walk a bunch of guys as he is wont to do once every couple of starts. Nobody thought he showed his best stuff, but it was seen as a positive outcome that he didn't get kicked around and got his beak wet at the major league level. Melville is a 26 year old journeyman with no sustained track record of success in the minors outside of his last few weeks last year. He was a WHIP nightmare today.
