What's the basis for this argument? He kinda lumbers around but I haven't seen anything yet to label him with the Dunn's of the world out there....also not to pick on you because it was a widespread opinion but if shortstop defense isn't that important why do we worry about LF? I mean last year Suarez was christened the best shortstop since Larkin despite his obvious defensive flaws

I watched Duvall in spring training play several balls poorly. He's just not much of a defender at any position, I figured he could do less damage at 3B.

I don't remember saying Suarez was the best shortstop since Larkin, but I do still think 1/2 of a season wasn't enough to determine he couldn't cut it at SS. I can't argue with the early returns so far though on the Reds current infield.

Cozart - singles on a blooper that just barely gets past the second baseman Zobrist. 1 on, 0 out.
Suarez - hits rocket line drive to third. Caught. 1 on, 1 out.

Phillips - sharp ground ball to short, Cozart scores from 3rd! 1-0 REDS. Votto on 2nd, 2 outs.
Mesoraco - strikes out swinging.

He threw 2 straight off speed pitches in the dirt after getting ahead with fastballs. I guess I just think Lester is bad enough that I wouldn't even worry about trying to fool him
True, I assume Finnegan isn't calling the pitches though.

What I like about Finnegan is that he appears to be throwing with great effort. This makes the change up deceptive.

Good fastball, deceptive change up, occasional breaking pitch. Good arsenal.

He's not a big pitcher so his durability within a game and over the season is TBD.

But he's certainly a very talented pitcher.

Part of my point....spring training isn't enough to tell if 1/2 a season isn't
I mean, sure, but Suarez played shortstop all throughout his minor league career. Duvall didn't play any LF professionally until the Reds picked him up. There's a reason for that.

Honestly kind of surprised anybody takes exception to the statement that Duvall isn't a very good outfielder.

LOL, last year we had all these posts that Marlon Byrd was playing a very good LF. No, says UZR.

Some of these guys look very steady on TV, but don't cover much area. So they appear better than they are. I know, Duvall dove for the catch tonight.

He's a converted infielder, I don't mind him in LF, it will take him time. Reds can sacrifice some defense for LF hitting.

In my Reds roster, he's the platoon LFer and a backup infielder as well.

I went back and looked at Maddux's time with the Cubs. Certainly better than I recalled. I knew he had the Cy Young season just before he left and I could recall one other very good year. Certainly not "pedestrian" as I stated, but I'd still take the whole body of work that Ferguson put in over Greg's. If you go really old-school...Mordecai Brown (three finger brown) should certainly be considered too. Dominant.
