Fowler K's and reached base as Mesoraco lets the ball get way past him. Gonna be another one of those nights.

Straily K's Heyward but Fowler steals 2nd. Mesoraco's throw wasn't great. He just doesn't look comfortable behind the plate.

Tom Servo

Scoreless 1st for Straily, had to work around Fowler reaching and a walk to Rizzo so it cost nearly 30 pitches though.

1-0 Cubs to bottom of 2 on an Addison Rusell HR. Straily has looked good...unfortunately due to waste pitches and foul balls he's already needed 50 pitches.

So, Straily doesn't have the velocity increase that the Fangraphs story (from March) talked about. But he is pitching well. Let's hear some explanations for this. Has he really turned it around, or should the velocity still being down be a big concern?

I never really expected to see him throwing 94 with any regularity during the season like the Fangraphs article suggested might be possible. He just needed to at least get back to his old, above 90 mph velocity.

I almost replied that he's not throwing harder than 90. Because, I saw him throw back-to-back fastballs that were 89 and 90 respectively. But then he just gunned one in there at 92. That's good. Because I don't think he registered higher than 91 at all the last two years.

I'm a Straily fan. The dude knows how to pitch. Not sure what is more surprising: That he was available for nothing on the waiver wire ... or the Reds thought Tim Melville was a better option to be in the rotation.

Random thought: Tanner Rainey was a terrible pick by the Reds last year. Supplemental first round for that guy? He was a better hitter than pitcher in college. He went to some Division 8 school and was a closer in addition to being a great hitter. And the Reds draft him as a starting pitcher in what is basically the late first round? No one had Rainey ranked that high. You roll the dice on a guy like that maybe in the 4th or 5th round, not the supplemental first.

Strange that the Reds make a double switch to keep Holt in the game in CF to replace Schebler, but earlier this series when both were in the game at the same time, Schebler played CF and Holt played LF.

Caleb Cotham seems like a very solid MLB relief pitcher to me. Why were we not excited about this guy at all when the Chapman trade was made? (Or maybe that was just me.)

Also: I tend to get overly optimistic about Reds' players after I've had a few beers. A few beers I've had.

Well, nevermind. And nice throw there from Bruce. My goodness.

Independent of his injury. I give Cozart just enormous credit for his hitting improvement. Which began last season, the sample is not that small anymore.

He's not that young a player, it's unusual to see this kind of hitting improvement. Just worked at it. Great job.

Yep. I think it is preferable if the fourth and fifth OF's hit from opposite sides. In 1990, Glenn Braggs (a righty hitter) was the fourth OF, and Herm Winningham was the fifth OF. This year, Schebler (a lefty hitter) is the fourth OF, so Holt is a good match.

Appel has been good THIS year in 3 starts (in 5, 6 and 5 IP). He has not been the #1 pick-worthy pitcher before. Witness last year's 4.48 ERA with a 1.390 WHIP in AAA.
