It does seem strange that after nearly a decade of dominance that all of these teams have seemingly figured out how to neutralize one of the games best hitters. I think it's just something Votto has to adjust to, which I believe he will, but it probably won't occur overnight.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-billy-hamilton-stole-joey-votto-five-bases/

The fact that this happened so early in the season was encouraging, but it turned out that hope was somewhat misleading, considering it didn’t happen again for another four months. But then, Votto took advantage of Hamilton’s presence on third base four times in a month near the end of the season, reinvigorating my desire for the Reds to do this every single time Hamilton is on third base with a runner at first next year. Even in the midst of a miserable season, Billy Hamilton was able to gift Joey Votto five steals, and gift the rest of us with an offseason of hope.

It's on Dick, Walt and Bob. They are too cheap to stock the team with a bullpen and had no plan B for what happened if all the prospects got boo-boos on their bodies. Even when the Reds were contending 3 years ago, they were too tight to completely fill the bullpen with legitimate arms.

Bruce currently has a UZR rating of -5.9 according to Fangraphs. This is the lowest UZR listed for any position player in the NL.

Jay is number 282 in UZR for the NL.

Using UZR/150, Jay is -37.2, number 242 in the league.

Surprising, I'd say.

Well, Messrs. U, Z & R don't think so.

Jay Bruce currently has a UZR rating of -5.9 according to Fangraphs. This is the lowest UZR listed for any position player in the NL.

Jay is number 282 in UZR for the NL.

UZR is a counting stat so one can also look at UZR/150. There, Jay is -37.2, number 242 in the league.

Looking at the component parts of UZR, Jay's Range Runs are -3.4. Only Braun is lower in the NL. Also his ARM (outfield arm runs saved) is -2.2, the worst of any NL player listed.

Surprising, I'd say.

I'm certainly not saying you're wrong...but those numbers certainly don't jive with what my eyes see. Not at all.

No, I don't doubt you. Just saying that rarely have I seen an advanced defensive stat that meshes with what my eyes see.

Just curious...since that stat is a judge on a players range...wouldn't Jay's be diminished simply because Billy takes so many more balls than other CF's do? It's not that Jay couldn't reach/catch those balls but rather that he's deferring to the CF'er like he's supposed to.
