Zach Buchanan on The radio just said that the Reds are tanking. He said the front office is not pitting the best team on the field, so that they will get a better draft pick next year. This was not his opinion, he was stating this as fact.

I think Zach phrased it poorly. I think he was talking about not bringing up the top prospects (rushing them) to fill a bad club. He was referring to the "non-exciting" names of Smith and Delabar. But he certainly IMPLIED that it was fact...it was not.

Nobody in the front office is going to admit such a thing to him even if it were true. Never.

Finnegan sets down the rest of the side fairly quickly after the solo shot, he's at an economical 43 pitches after 4. He doesn't appear to have his best swing and miss stuff today, the fastball is around 91, but he is avoiding walks.

For all we know, Zach Weiss is out indefinitely with injury. Chacin is supposedly not a bat misser.

Don't be dazzled by a lot of AA relief success. We're talking about getting out Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy in the 8th and 9th innings. It takes a pretty talented pitcher.

I've heard this theory for years - don't pay for relievers, don't devote highly rated prospects to relief. You can find good relievers off the scrap heap.

I'm watching the scrap heap every night with this club and it doesn't work. It's like any other position. Talent wins out.

Last year they tried a quick fix with Gregg and got burned. This year is just a rebuild, spending money on the bullpen wouldn't make much sense. There's no indication to me that the Reds don't value relief pitching, we saw the money they have to Broxton, Marshall, Parra, etc and only cut ties with LeCure, Ondrusek, etc because they got bad, not because the Reds were being cheap.

HokieRed

I don't think this is that hard. Here's a projection for next year's staff. Rotation: Bailey, DeSclafani, Stephenson, Reed, and one of Finnegan, Iglesias, and Lamb. Two of the last three will be in the pen, together with Lorenzen, Cingrani, Straily, and two of Wood, Delabar, Johnson, Ramirez, Adleman. Moscot, Weiss, Somsen, Dayan Diaz, possibly even Simon. I think Hoover, Hayes, and Ohlendorf will be out of the organization; Cotham may still be in the organization.

I'm not saying the Reds are being cheap. I'm saying that I've read for years on this site that it's foolish to spend money or top talent on a bullpen. I don't agree, never did.

As for the Reds currently, it's not a matter of money. Presumably the whole team is getting cheaper, which is fine with me. I don't expect the pen to be any different.

I simply want to see a viable plan for a bullpen. I do not. This entire pitching staff is turning over and I see a lot of effort and talent devoted to this rotation. I do not see the same with the bullpen.

'69
05-07-2016, 11:18 PM
JC Ramirez hitting 97, if his #1 isn't straight as a string, may have something there. Ohlendorf throwing off speed @ 81 and then brings it at 94-95..Cingrani ooking like he turned the corner, and Wood seems solid, servieable at a minimum.

I agree with KC that you don't build a pen from the scrap heap, a strong BP is just as important to any phase of winning consistently.

Kc61

That's fine, but to my knowledge the Reds have never even suggested that Finnegan, Iglesias or even Lamb will be in the bullpen. They have steadfastly said that they will be starters.

So I don't view this as a Reds plan. It's a good thought from you, but until I see the Reds devote some real talent to the bullpen I won't be satisfied with this pitching rebuild.

'69
