I'll take the blame for the Reds' 1-10 streak, as I've been on vacation for all but one of those games and haven't been able to watch a single one. Well, the streak stops tonight as I've started the first game thread I have in a while.

Here are the lineups:

Reds:
SS Cozart
CF Hamilton
1B Votto
2B Phillips
RF Bruce
LF Duvall
3B Pacheco
C Barnhart
P Finnegan

Dodgers:
LF @kikehndez
3B @redturn2
1B @AdrianTitan23
2B Kendrick
CF Thompson
SS Seager
RF Puig
C @AJEllis17
P Kershaw

I'll update them to look better once a graphic is available.

Kershaw is exactly who you should bunt against. He's not walking you, and there's a more than good chance he will strike you out. Hamilton was going to make an out against Kershaw, might was well make it productive.

No. A single likely scores Cozart. A ground out to the right side or fly ball to right moves him. Against Kershaw and really anyone, outs are precious. As if one run is a game winner. It lets him off the hook. And there are stats out there to prove this, but I digress.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/2016-17-international-slot-values-and-bonus-pools/#T7HSfFXuc1MEcAT6.97

The Orioles have a total pool of 2,539,600. This is made up of their 4 slot values, plus the 700,000 that is added to each team's pool. The 4 individual slot values the Orioles will receive are: 1) 885,300, 2) 451,400, 3) 304,900 and 4) 198,000. So, the minimum international bonus slot value that the Reds will receive is 502,900.

This means the Reds can spend an extra half a million or so dollars before the tax kicks in.

Here is a link to an article that explains it all fairly well: http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/viva-el-birdos-knowledge-nest/2014/7/2/5864451/mlb-a-primer-on-international-amateur-free-agency

To be fair, one of the walks came after BP booted an easy two-out grounder. The command was pretty solid, he was basically pitching to contact and generating a good amount of weak contact as opposed to swings and misses.

One thing I'd point out, in the bask of an 8 inning start, that Finnegan only recently turned 23. For reference, Tyler Bedee (http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=beede-000tyl) was drafted a few picks ahead of him in 2014, and Erick Fedde was picked right behind him, and they are also both 23. Both of those guys had more innings under their belt in college than Finnegan, and they are in AA and A+, respectively.

Finny ain't perfect, he's not a phenom, but he's still ahead of the curve.

I stated before. Bunting against Kershaw is smart for weak hitters like the pitcher and Hamilton. They are almost automatic outs against Kershaw, and likely strike out victims, so might as well make their outs productive.

Bunting isn't always a bad idea.

No snark. Serious question to you and those who like this post.

What do the nerds say about bunting when the batters are OPSing .649 and .648 and the pitcher is the most dominant pitcher in years.

No offense, but while I don't like bunting, I can't give Price a hard time on this one.

Take away the AB's you reference and the Reds were 0 for 25.

The reason I don't like bunting is because it rarely ends up working (for The Reds), even if you move the runner over as Hamilton did.

The Reds suck at bunting and have for years. Maybe I could get on board if The Reds had a reputation as being fundamentally sound but honestly, all the way back to early in the Dusty Baker era, they've sucked out loud at bunting. But they keep doing it.

I just liked the analogy lol.

Honestly I don't think bunting or not bunting mattered tonight with Kershaw on the mound, though I would have just had Billy swinging away in the first with a runner on 2nd. Just take your shots.

I hear you. But to complain about it tonight?

What were we expecting Hamilton or Finnegan (the history of Reds bunting doesn't matter here) to do if they swung the bat? I'm just saying tonight, the odds just may have tipped in favor of trying to bunt the guy over. In the end...it really didn't matter.

The best plan of action for a poor hitting team vs. Kershaw may just be to have the manager flip a coin before every pitch.

Heads: Try to put it over the fence.
Tails: Take.

Kinda serious.

It's a frustration that has built up for years, all the way back to Dusty. Reds teams are consistently bad at it and yet continue to drop bunts down like they were some small ball powerhouse. It's just annoying.

In the end, like you say, it didn't matter.
