They say it's only the 3rd time of his career. Combined with yesterday being Votto's first DH, it's a fun reminder that Dusty used to love to give us Miguel Cairo - Designated Hitter.

AL lineups are usually built around a middle-of-the-order DH, while NL lineups drag in their fourth or fifth outfielder or utility man.

Nice DP by Suarez and Phillips. Finnegan was looking to be at a high pitch count for the inning but executed a good pitch.

Reds can't get Danny Worth out.

Evan Gattis double, 1-0 Astros.

Finny doesn't look like he has much today, 90-92 mph all in the same spot out of the zone.

Jose Peraza shouldn't be up if he's not going to play everyday.

Really wish Finnegan would start cutting down on the walks. Fell behind on Worth and ended up grooving one for a bullet single. Chris Welsh brought up a good point - He misses up and away to RHH a lot.

To Gattis' credit he drove it to where it was pitched....wasn't a bad pitch at all

Wasn't a great pitch either though, would have been a ball. That is Gattis' wheelhouse though.

Tom Servo
06-19-2016, 02:44 PM
Reds get a break to tag Valbuena trying to steal, would have been a full count. 28 pitch inning for Finnegan after the quick first. Gotta throw strikes and gotta get strikeouts Brandon, can't rely on them to make outs on 2-0 counts.

Yeah. I'd like to see Finnegan develop a curve. It wouldn't have to be 66 mph like Lamb's.

Lamb's problem was too many of those strikeouts took full counts or 10+ pitches. Reed's only problem were two badly placed pitches. Quick outs are fine, but you need strikeouts as well.

I assume that Suarez running was a called play but who knows.

Rally fizzles as Fiers, already fooling the Reds with his junk stuff, gets another generous strike call. He might have a complete game in him today.

Valbuena HR. 3-0 Houston.

If it was called, then whoever called it should no longer have that responsibility, and if it wasn't then Suarez is sitting the rest of the day in an attempt to have him study the game from the bench. That was dumb...during a season of really dumb stuff. Being bad is one thing. Being bad and dumb is unbearable.

Finnegan a mess at this point, another walk after a few wild pitches. 3 walks to 1 strikeout today so far.

Sorry if I sound too negative today, but I want to see Finnegan succeed as a starter, and games like this put him well behind the eight ball. Particularly disheartening because he looked to be getting back to getting K's in his last few outings and we saw how Reed carved up the Astros yesterday.

I said he was a great hitter but average or below in every other aspect, never actually called him an average player, I stand by that. He is the equivalent of a great scorer in basketball who is a sub par defender and rebounder.

Misspoke honestly, I couldn't find the words to say what I wanted to say, hence the edit after I thought about it.

I think Votto is an elite hitter but is average or below at every other facet of the game, his offense makes him an all star level player.

Joey Votto

- 10th best wRC+ of qualified 1B.

- 8th best baserunning rating of quailfied 1B according to fangraphs *I will defer to their ranking

- 7th best UZR/150 and 10th best defensive rating according to fangraphs

- 10th best WAR of qualified 1B.

That is this season up to date.

Before anyone questions the defensive/baserunning rankings remember most 1B are lugs that are poor defenders and baserunners. Joey has done some silly things in both categories but is better than most around the league. Plus he is coming off one of the worst months of his career and seems to have turned it around.

Joey Votto average? I think not.
