Game is underway, leadoff double by SD.

Two groundball outs score the run. Suarez could have thrown home but took the out. 1-0 Padres.

Two consecutive groundouts plate a run for the Friars.

Duvall played that ball off the wall very well, holding the batter to a single.

Cozart K's looking on the tenth pitch of the AB.

Looks like the same strike zone as last night.

Votto singled and Bruce hammered one but not enough to beat the shift, that's it in the 1st.

I have to say that the FS1 broadcasting crew has done a very nice job so far. I don't know the play-by-play man, but the color commentator is former Reds LHP C.J. Nitkowski.

Tom Servo
06-25-2016, 04:58 PM
Interesting insight from Nitkowski about Finnegan's positioning on the mound and how it affects his stuff.

2 Ks in the 3rd for Finnegan, now that I like. A two-out walk to Wil Myers, not so much.

Tom Servo
06-25-2016, 05:01 PM
Matt Kemp hammers one, but it dies on the warning track to end the frame. Finny just under 50 pitches through 3 innings.

Big Klu
06-25-2016, 05:03 PM
Kemp flyout to CF warning track to end inning, 8.

That ball sounded better off the bat than it actually traveled.

Tom Servo

Finnegan works a one out walk in the 4th for the Reds.

1-2-3 4th for Finnegan with another K. 4 strikeouts so far.

Thrown out on an ill advised attempt to steal 3rd.

I'm really hoping Price isn't that stupid and that Phillips was running on his own. It doesn't make any sense with Bruce and Duvall to follow. Not to mention the old by the book adage: don't risk making the first or third out at third base.

Tom Servo

K #6 by Finnegan. Looking sharp today.

Welp. Pitcher Drew Pomeranz goes deep. 2-0 Padres.

How We Lookin
06-25-2016, 05:30 PM
It's on Price either way. The player doesn't get to make that call unless the manager lets them.

Padres pitcher homers.

redsfan4life67
06-25-2016, 05:31 PM
I can't wait till Phillips is no longer a Red. Plain to see as long as Price is manager he will hit somewhere 1-4 in lineup and will never be benched.

Tom Servo
06-25-2016, 05:32 PM
And Finnegan promptly walks the next batter after the 2 out HR to the pitcher.

Can't find the zone now.

My guess is that Phillips playing every day is a GM call, maybe even an ownership call.

There is undoubtedly controversy between Phillips and the Reds relating to his contract and his refusal to agree to trades.

I think the issues with Brandon are above Price's pay grade.

Of course, I can't vouch for that steal attempt, my guess is Phillips thought he saw an opening, went on his own, and was badly mistaken. Hard to believe anyone else told him to go.

Ump gives Wil Myers some late timeout calls. He ultimately flies out to center.

Honestly, the HR to the pitcher doesn't bother me so much as the walk that followed it. The HR thing happens, but you can't let it begin to go downhill on you. Good job by Finnegan though to get Myers to end the threat.

You're right, but also expecting too much.

Finnegan is 23. He just learned a lesson about pitching to the opposing pitcher. He will remember this for a long time.

His immediate reaction was frustration. He'll get over that too some day. That's how you learn.

I know, I do periodically remind myself he is the same age as Cody Reed and Robert Stephenson and some of the AA/AAA pitchers. He is still ahead of the curve, all things considered.

I'm not expecting perfection, but I do have approximate numbers in my head of where his K/9 and BB/9 need to be in order to envision him as a starter longterm. He's flashed enough in the K/9 area that I believe it will improve with time, but the command still gives me pause.

Respectfully what is the lesson to be learned?

Drew Pomeranz just went opposite field. I chalk that up to a lucky swing. I don't mind a guy pumping strikes to the pitcher and letting them put it in play. If you can get an easy strikeout by all means do it. But I'm all for getting a bit of a breather and reducing the pitch "stress load" when facing the pitcher.

Yeah it was a fastball down the middle but pitchers see that all the time. What is the lesson? I mean you can't take it for granted and I am sure Brandon knows that...but Pomeranz was late on the pitch but swung hard and got good wood on it. Tip your cap.

Tom Servo
06-25-2016, 06:09 PM
Ugh. Finnegan squeezed a bit and Jankowski works the walk with two outs, and that's it for Brandon.

Overall a really nice outing, came within a few inches of matching his season high in strikeouts and just a few scattered hits. I'd just be sure to watch some video on the opposing pitcher next time.

The lesson is to bear down against the pitcher, and if it doesn't work out then tip your cap and don't get too frustrated or upset.

It's not that it's a dramatic revelation, but it's a reminder. It will help him incorporate these things into his future performances.

Finnegan has been a good story this year, he's growing, and all these little experiences will help him.

Olendorf did get out the jam to close the book on Finnegan. Reds have 9 outs left to score 3 runs.

Tom Servo

Pomeranz K's Bruce, Duvall, and Suarez in the 7th and this baby looks like it is about over. Cap tip to Pomeranz, I always thought the 1st rounder out of Ole Miss had untapped potential and he just needed to get the hell out of Colorado.

This game is almost as embarrassing as last night's game. The pitching is better today, but the offense is even worse. 3-0 feels like it might as well be 13-0.

True, but Redszone is sleeping on Pomeranz a bit. He's blanked offenses better than ours this year (Cubs, Pirates, Giants, Rockies).

After Sunday's contest against the Padres, the Reds face the Cubs (3 home, 3 away) and the Nationals (4 away) over the next 10 games. Brutal.
