Just love Bryan Price. Were sitting 20 games under .500 and we cant even play one of our top prospects in Jose Peraza who we gave up our best hitter for. Absolutely no reason for him not to be in the lineup everyday. Hes really starting to drive the ball. If your going to start Brandon Phillips then freaking move him down to the 7 spot were he belongs.

:bang:

Mind boggling. And Hamilton had a great day yesterday so he moves to 7th. Cozart is quickly on his way to his usual BA and OBP. The season is lost. Bat Hamilton lead off and see if he has really improved), and Cozart really anywhere 4th and below. But for all that is holy, BP should never bat 3rd! 7th more like it. Ugh. Terrible manager continues to be terrible. I like:

Billy Boy Boy Boy
Votto
Bruce (can't bat lefties back-to-back, dude)
Doovuhl
Cozart
Suarez or somebody
Peraza (could be lead off candidate as well to get at bats)/BP
Catcher (honestly wouldn't mind them up higher than Suarez or BP)
Oh-fer

Who exactly calls these pitches? They are awful at their job. 0-2 count on Zobrist and they call for a high fastball. Lamb has a plus changeup, but by golly let's try to blow a high 92 mph fastball past him!

Maybe we can keep that same game plan on Kris Bryant tonight!

To be fair I always figured the manager's job was to *WIN*....isn't that what minor league managers do? Unless given direction by upper management, then the manager should just try to win I assume.

I get that view, but I think he's so good you have to try. If the arm/shoulder AGAIN becomes an issue, fine, he probably can't handle it. But he did fine last year before hitting a wall at the end of the year, and it's not like he's the first pitcher to ever have inflammation/an impingement this year.

Basically, I need a larger sample size.

Right, finishing with the 10th-best record in MLB in 2014 landed us Tyler Stephenson. Imagine if we were a bit worse that lost season and landed Andrew Benintendi instead?

You starting to get it?

It's not about being bad for years. It's about recognizing when the Reds are in the midst of a lost season, and wanting the best draft pick possible. In every round. Plus more money overall to offer draft picks, including those taken in the latter rounds.

If the Reds are going to miss the playoffs for sure, I want the best draft picks possible. I don't care if we finish 24th or 28th best in MLB.

It pains me...but I'm kind of with Chuckie on this one. This season is long over. I personally am not rooting for L's, but they do serve a greater good.

Right, finishing with the 10th-best record in MLB in 2014 landed us Tyler Stephenson. Imagine if we were a bit worse that lost season and landed Andrew Benitendi instead?

You starting to get it?

It's not about being bad for years. It's about recognizing when the Reds are in the midst of a lost season, and wanting the best draft pick possible. In every round. Plus more money overall to offer draft picks, including those taken in the latter rounds.

I don't lose sleep over Benditendi (or whatever his name is) or any other minor-league draft pick. There is plenty of talent available in the draft. It's about drafting smartly, and development.

Serious question for you: Why not just forfeit the rest of the season and dispense with the pretense of even trying to field a competitive team?

It's not just about the first round. Reds would have a higher pick in every round ... a total of 40 rounds.

Plus, you get more money to spend on draft picks.

Then make that the goal every year. Performance doesn't matter. Future potential is the gold ring.

I totally get it, but look at the Astros and the Cubs. You spend some time in the wilderness, but if you do it right, you emerge stronger than ever. And those teams have much less of an excuse for that course of direction given their market sizes. Reds need to do everything they can to compete with the big boys. If you can't beat Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh this year, you might as well win just 62 instead of 72.

Isn't that just part of the equation, though? The Astros and Cubs also didn't have many (any?) bad contracts hanging over their heads. They did a legitimate rebuild.

The Astros aren't anything special. They lucked into a playoff appearance last year with 86 wins, and they are coming back to earth this year.

And I've seen good Cubs teams before. 1984, 1989, 1998, 2003. They always look like a juggernaut, and they always fail spectacularly. Forgive me if I'm not a believer.

But during a year when the Reds are going to finish no better than 24th best in MLB, why would you care if they finish 28th best? All it would mean is a better future for the Reds. Thing is, there was actuallly talent in the top of those drafts. Look at this past draft. You coulda flipped a coin over the top 10 guys, and any coulda gone #1...personally I wish the Reds weren't drafting until #7 or so this year, and went after Blake Rutherford. Senzel is a nice pick, but Rutherford has way more upside. IF their isn't a surefire #1 pick pick, why you want to lose games to get a tweener?

Houston was a good team last year, though it's true they did just sneak in after a poor second half of the year. They were ahead of the curve anyway though, nobody thought the 2015 Astros would be a playoff team.

It's not even so much the Cubs team on the field right now, as good as it is, it's the depth in their system. They have 3-4 hitters in AA/AAA right now who could be playing for a team like us. The same goes for Houston. They are both sitting pretty moving forward regardless of the outcome of this season.

I believe that there is something inherently good in winning, even if you're not very good at it. (Possibly especially if you're not very good at it.) It goes toward the team culture. Losing should never be excused or tolerated as an acceptable behavior. Sure, losses happen. But there's a difference between losing a game (or even losing a lot of games) and being a loser. I don't want the Reds to be losers with a losing culture.

The double switch was intended to allow Patton to pitch multiple innings and not hit.

So Madden figures, Wood is a good athlete/hitter for a pitcher, let him play LF. That way I can avoid Patton hitting. Not that worried about having Wood play LF/hit if it facilitates allowing Patton to pitch multi-innings.

And now Wood is going to pitch to Jay Bruce, so that's another reason for this. Patton goes to left field. Lefty/lefty against Jay Bruce.
