Passed ball scores a run. Obviously miscommunication between Lamb and Cabrera, as Ramon appeared to be looking for something other than what Lamb threw.

Little League moms gonna Little League mom.

I've kept book for a lot of games (primarily at HS level). I'm not one to say, "Well, he touched it, so it has to be an error." I always consider the difficulty of the play, and whether it should be made under ordinary circumstances. (If anything, I am lenient about things like bad hops and losing the ball in the sun/lights.) Suarez left his feet, but I don't think it was an excessively difficult chance.

E5.

Baseball scoring rules are so stupid. That should absolutely be an error on Bruce. What's the rationale for ruling that a hit? Because Jay didn't touch the ball? He wasn't even close, even though a good RF would have caught it with ease.

So, that play was pretty much the definition of an "error." But because MLB is stuck in its old ways it's ruled a double and no one thinks twice about it. Error all the way.

No, unfortunately for Lamb, that is correctly ruled a hit. Sometimes a fielder misplays a ball so badly that there is no opportunity to charge an error. (In other words, he made such a mental miscue that there was no opportunity to make a play.) As you said, "He wasn't even close." Therefore, he couldn't make a chance on the play. In such instances, the only ruling is "hit".

Right, I get that. My point is that reasoning is absurd. It should be an "error" when a player makes a clear error like Bruce did. The only rationale for ruling that a "hit" is "That's the way we've always done it in MLB."

That's poor reasoning, IMO.

I think first we have to define what an error is. An error is when a fielder fails to make a play on a ball on which he had a chance to make one. In this case, Bruce was unable to even put himself in a position where making a play was possible. Therefore, he was unable to "fail" because there was no chance. Admittedly, a possible (and likely most probable) reason that he wasn't in position was because he ran the wrong route. But that's a mental mistake (the mythical "mental error" that so many coaches and managers talk about), and not a physical error.

This is where we strongly disagree. Bruce was absolutely able to put himself in position to make the play -- most right fielders would have made the play with ease. Bruce wasn't able to do that for whatever reason and looked ridiculous in the process. It's not like he lost the ball in the sun or lights. That might be different. But that's not what we're talking about here.

It should be an "error" ... the old-school MLB rules just say it's not.

The only thing is, we can't judge him on what most rightfielders would do, or even what he himself would do in a different situation. We can only judge him on that play. And on that play he was unable to even put himself in position to make a chance. Therefore, since there was no chance, there is no error. It's unfortunate, because he obviously made a mental mistake.

Keeping a scorebook in an official capacity is obviously subjective, but I like to think that I am fair-minded about it.

(I have also coached at the HS level, and though I understood that mental mistakes were often not ruled as errors, mistakes like those would drive us nuts. You can rest assured that the staff is likely very irate over it. In fact, mental mistakes like those often bother coaches more than actual errors do.)

Oh, I know. My HS baseball coach would make us run one lap around the field for every "mental error" committed during practice. Physical errors? Nada. He knew that was part of the game. Mental errors made him crazy.

My contention is that if an outfielder makes that bad of a mental error, it should be ruled as an "error."
