Bench role players are like relievers. Yearly volatility. Lenny Harris was great one year, average to bad the next. The only consistent yearly bench player/hitters I ever saw was Manny Mota whom Pedro Borbon hit for many times and guys like Jim Dwyer, John Lowenstien.

Just a huge contrast in styles between Thom and Day.

I'd like to see how Day handles a pennant race. Thom tries to generate excitement, Day hasn't really been tested in that department.

No. The idea was to push the pitcher back farther in the line-up. This way the Pitcher hits in the 2 hole, 7 spots away. It's not to get Suarez in there, it's to get two innings from the reliever. Other choies would have been to hit the pitcher in the 7 hole where De Jesus was or just leave him in the 9 hole. Either way, it likely means a pinch hitter next inning and only one inning from Smith.

Double switches aren't for offense. They are part of managing the bullpen.

On the other hand, they could have left the pinch-hitter Waldrop in the game in RF, and put Smith in the #4 spot with Bruce leaving the game. But I'm sure they didn't want to take Bruce out of the game (justifiably so).

So you just let Smith hit for himself or pinch hit and burn another arm? I think this was exactly the right move. The other option would have been to leave Waldrop in there to hit 9th and take Bruce out so the pitcher hits in the 4 spot (nine spots away).

Agreed. Double switches are all about getting an extra inning from the pitcher. It has nothing to do with the position players. In late July on the eve of a west coast trip, using one less arm today makes more sense than possibly one more PA for Peraza or even Bruce for that matter.

So the PH is likely Suarez, so you end up in the same spot and burn another arm in the dog days. Makes absolutely zero sense.

Here is (and there goes) the 9 spot now, the Reds really rallied and got into a position where they would need a PH here.

The Reds have an off day on Thursday btw, and it's not like there's a rule that they can't call someone up if the bullpen genuinely gets taxed.

Skipped the game when it was 5-5 to listen to Junior. Came back and it's 9-5. Bad pitching came back out today. Reason No. 162 why this first series was fool's gold, but fun anyway. Anyway, Junior hardly mentioned Cincinnati and rightly so. He was appreciated in Seattle and not so much in Cincinnati. I remember the rant Andy Furman did on WLW after Junior suffered that critical injury. I never forgot that. I never listened to Furman again.

IF Price is behind late and lets the pitcher hit for himself, everyone on here would be calling for his job. The most important thing he has to do in game is manage his pen. People keep calling for his job and I think they have no idea what they are talking about. Pardon me for being blunt, but this is a perfect example. That double switch was exactly the right move. Is that 1 PA for Peraza going to matter in his development? I guess when he becomes the .675 OPS guy everyone wants replaced, we'll know the reason now.

I get it, but your way, they'd need to have some one up and warming in case they get guys on and need to PH. Even if they don't PH for Smith, they use more of the pen. This way, they hand it to Smith and the pen takes the rest of the day off unless the Reds come back. I think that is significant.

Bruce 3 run dinger. 9-8. last at bat in cincy? Did I miss something?

The odds are heavily in favor of Bruce being traded in the next week, and the Reds don't play here again until the 2nd

This would be a good time for BP's first homer in 2 months

Just for giggles, that HR ties him with Nomar Garciaparra for 260th on the all time list. Next up - Rob Deer with 230.

Last that I heard, the Indians, Rangers, Blue Jays, and Dodgers all had interest in him

I don't think anything is imminent. It's just that there have been rumors surrounding Bruce, and the Reds' next home game is the day after the deadline date.

Was Barnhart unavailable to PH, or had he already (not paying too much attention most of the game)? Because Cabrera is baad

I like that I made sure to turn the game back on before when Bruce was up with the bases loaded just to watch him strikeout only to miss a big 3 run shot the next time up lol.

Gonna miss Jay assuming this is it. Good player, good guy.

Good player, good guy. Bit of a disappointment but my expectations were very high. Would like to see him get a chance in the post season.
