The battle for the Wild Card heats up as the Marlins come to Cincinnati having lost Stanton for the season and ARod saying he is taking the rest of the year off.

A win will pull the Reds to within 11.5 games of the Marlins (though St. Louis and LA are ahead of the Floridians)

Regular lineup at this point should be:

BHam
BP
#notelite
DuvAll-Star(RF)
Geno
The Car
Cozy
Schebler(LF)

With that group I'd have:
BHam
Geno
#notelite
Duvy
The Car
The Jesus
Little T
Schebler

Finnegan seems to have given up trying to throw the ball through a brick wall.

He seems to be mixing his pitches, and is acting more like a pitcher, less like a thrower.

Let's hope it works for him.

Not that time, a triple.

You (sorry about that word again) may end up being the last man standing on the Finnegan as a starter wagon, I've got one foot off and contemplating how to tuck and roll. Barring a huge offseason turnaround, which isn't impossible, I just don't see it with him. A Finnegan who sits 90-92 with very spotty command isn't much more than John Lamb type. I do see a possible Zach Britton though out of the bullpen.

There's no reason to take him out right now except for innings limit, but he has a lot of work to do. Right now DeSclafani, Bailey and Straily would be pencilled into my 2017 rotation with the other two spots TBD.

LOL. Just noticed the thread title. Well done.

I'm very happy they tried Finnegan in the rotation this year. Like Tom appears to be, I'm very close to throwing in the towel on him as a starter and ready for him to begin next year in the pen. But glad they gave him the shot at starting.

I think next year they have to go Disco, Homer, Strailey, Reed and Stephenson as the rotation next year with Garrett ready to be the next man up. I suspect Reed will show improvement while Stephenson will really struggle, but I think you gotta go with that five and see what we got in '17.

In my opinion, we wouldn't have been in that situation if Wood would have thrown strikes. Yes the throw was high, but he also broke late for first and it was a bad play all around, not apologizing for Votto in any way.

It was definitely the bigger issue despite Votto's botch, and it's why strikeouts are so important. Don't leave anything up to chance like an elevated toss.

I think some people overestimated how close our three were. Lamb was the only one genuinely close to the big leagues as a starter. Reed had just recently graduated from A+ when he got him and Finnegan had barely started in the minors. Lamb, consequently, is the only one I feel particularly let down by as the other two are work-in-progress 23 year olds.

Sea Ray
08-15-2016, 11:17 PM
What depressed me with this game was the offense. Very few major league starters in that lineup. Holt, Renda, DeJesus for sure. Schebler is getting his opportunity and he's blowing it. Time after time I saw Reds hitters swinging at pitches way out of the strike zone. It's obvious the Marlins were working from a scouting report that said the way to get Reds' hitters out was to not throw them strikes. Granted the home plate umpire was terrible but typically our hitters saw one pitch in the strike zone per AB late in this game.

We're seeing the extreme lack of talent on this team. It shows itself in many ways. Duvall's bat is looking slow. This is because he's wearing down due to lack of OF options. He needs some days off. Ditto for Cozart. How can we expect to win games with lineups like that? I won't even get into the defense played by those 8.

Listening on the way home and in the 4th Brantley said Votto with the base hit, but ball got away for outfielder and Brantley said Votto was jogging to first, said maybe he doesn't see it but then said every other Reds position play would've been standing on 2nd. I didn't see the play obviously but a definite jab at Votto.

He is an odd player. Right now he's damn near David Ortiz but I think Ortiz is smarter on the bases.

The toss was bad and he was off guard and should've made play on Renda throw.

He's like Peyton Manning if Peyton couldn't hand off.

There was no chance, it was one of those where you go "Oh, it's past hi- oh, never mind" because he immediately recovers. Billy goes to 2nd on it, obviously, but a Votto/Duvall/Schebler would be stupid to even try.

Once the bobble happened yes, but had he been running out of the box? If so Phillips does that every time but he'd try and get thrown out.
