View Full Version : 8/23/2016 Reds vs Rangers

Back to inter-league play tonight as the Reds take on the AL West 1st place Texas Rangers. Ace Straily takes the hill for the Reds. Cozart still out. I have a feeling we may not see much of him the rest of the season.

I wouldn't mind a few more of the Havoc brothers in the lineup. (I loved the speed game in the 80's and early 90's, combined with some power and OBP.)

Yes, RBIs as a stat mean nothing. You're not differentiating the act of driving in a run from the RBI stat (which tells us nothing about a player's ability.)

This May very well be the greatest play in StatCast history. Not only does no other CF make that catch....none of them could make that catch. You can't get a better jump and they can't run 22 mph on a catch and the fact the catch took him to the wall on a slide. He saved 3 bases that no one else could've.

I guess this is just yet another outlier catch that shouldn't count because he doesn't have good CF abilities...he's just fast.

In this instance, and considering the no score game, it was terrific that Joey drove in a run, and yes accumulated an RBI which a lessor player with less RBIs would not.

The Reds have worn red jerseys in three of Straily's last four starts in home night games, and won every one of them. It might be time to pack them up for the next road trip, too.

(They also wore the red "Los Rojos" jersey in a Straily start at Milwaukee, and won that game too.)

He reminds me of those closers before sabremetrics really took hold where you had guys with pretty low strikeout rates and high walk rates who somehow were always called on in the 9th inning to finish things off, like David Weathers.

That is whom he reminds me of...CoCo was better than Weathers...Weathers always scared me when he came in....unless it was at least a 3 run lead.
If Tony could get away from the first batter walk, he wouldn't scare me as much, but that seems to e what he is....I'd rather Rasiel pitch 3 innings than go thru that.

This is probably stating the obvious, but in the second half it seems like the Reds don't let themselves get down after a 2/3 losses in a row. There always seems to be a guy who steps up and says 'We're gonna win this one' and go out and perform. In the first half that wasn't happening and 2/3 losses were escalating to 3/4/5/6 losses.

Really nice to see the Reds playing so well lately, sans the Monday game. I'm liking what I am seeing of Hamilton and Peraza at the top of the lineup. Not many games I know, but it is encouraging.

Just a random thought. The Reds and Rangers must be the only teams not to employ a pretty young lady sideline reporter for the games. I had the Ranger telecast on last night and they take it to a whole different level. They had an old man who looks like he's ready for his social security check reporting from the dugout. Are there no pretty young ladies available in Texas to do the on field reporting? :)

It baffles me why the Rangers pitched to Votto in the 6th and in the 8th inning last night. I mean, it was a LH pitcher in the 6th, but Votto was 1 for 2 with a warning-track line drive out already off of Holland. I seriously doubt Joe Maddon would have pitched to him either time, but I'm happy to see it and they sure got burned.
