Its the mlb.com free game and not a late night start

Brings back memories of watching hitters futility in the face of trying to see Nolan Ryan in the twilight.

No Trout or Pujols for the Angels. I guess they saw the Reds pulling away from them in the draft standings and want to turn around that "slide."

Another day, another two-out hit for Votto in the first inning.

That was bad, Votto picked off. No reason to be taking a big lead.

And a Tootblan as well. Votto is the crown prince of Tootblans (Brandon Phillips is king).

He was dreaming about a little café, where they play guitars all night and all day, you can hear them from the back room, strumming. So hold tight baby, don't you know daddy's coming?

Suarez jobbed on a strike three call, but the Reds like with Weaver yesterday are making Nolasco look semi-competent thus far.

Needs one more to all but ensure .400+ for two straight months, first time ever for a Redleg.

Chris Welsh saying what I've said for some time now: that Finnegan is in the rotation. Forget moving him to the pen. He's earned it. There's no one else who is pitching better

He's looking like a starter.

Heck, I've been all over the map with him.

Critics point to his league leading counting stats (walks and HR) but he seems to have turned a corner. So I have no problem looking the other way on those 2 issues and seeing if he can't keep this up. He could slip back into poor form but on this staff let's let it ride.

I'm all over the map too, I'm the odd bird who's simultaneously a fan and a critic this year lol.

The changeup is the key. Without it, he's basically a reliever masquerading as a starter. With it, he looks like a guy you can dream on.

Another 1-2-3, 2 K inning for Finnegan.

He's throwing strikes now too with confidence. Seemed like a lot earlier in the year he was immediately falling behind 2-0, 3-0 to batters, right now if he falls behind 1-0 the next pitch is a strike.

Whoever has been working with him deserves credit, he's obviously made helpful adjustments.

Billy sac bunt and Cozart IMMEDIATELY grounds out to third to make it two outs with the runner on third.

Welsh rightfully pointing out a sac bunt was a pretty dumb idea.

Votto cracks one but caught by the jumping 2B. Sigh.

Kc61
08-31-2016, 08:32 PM
Billy has been slumping a bit, probably bunting for a hit.

I thought they'd give him a day off today.

Didn't look as good at the plate last night. May be a bit tired.

There's little doubt that Finnegan will be in the rotation next year. It's not like Stephenson or Garrett are knocking down the door in Louisville.

Assuming health (and Iggy sticking in the bullpen), it will be Disco/Homer/Strailey/Finnegan/Reed in the rotation to start 2017.

No, you're right, I'm all-in on the rebuild, but I just want SOME pride. Flailing away at Ricky Nolasco's slop is just pitiful.

Finnegan benefitted from it too but he was still excellent.

On top of last night, this team looks like they're running for the bus. They looked horrible at the plate. They were swinging at wild pitches like little leaguers. If they don't care then I'd like to see guys like Winker and Herrera in the lineup. I bet they'd care

I've always been a fan of Finnegan, he's a true competitor.
I was afraid he may have hit the wall towards the end of July. I'm thrilled he's proved me wrong.
I love the guy and believe he's earned a shot at the starting rotation next year.
Just hope they don't overwork him the rest of this season.

That's a pretty poor roadtrip for the Reds whatever way you slice it. They are where they are for a reason, but that wasn't really good enough from the offense.

cumberlandreds
09-01-2016, 07:53 AM
You just get the feeling the Reds had no interest in this road trip at all. This happens to poor teams just grinding out the schedule.

I am afraid I am going to have to admit to being wrong for one of the few times in my life. Finnegan looks like a starter. I thought he would be a bullpen guy but no I was wrong. I will try not to be wrong again. :)

He said in the post game that he was going through a dead arm period in July but he feels great now. Admits that they'll shut him down at some point but hasn't been told what that point is now.

Ricky Nolasco with a complete game shutout under 100 pitches. Barf.

It reminded me of the time Ramon Ortiz shutout the Pirates with a similar amount of pitches.

Sometimes if you throw the ball over the plate against a meh line-up, they simply don't hit it for 9 innings. Arroyo with his array of slop used to go through similar types of stretches.

I remember Josh Fogg once doing that too (not with the Reds of course, he got obliterated every time out).

Found it: two hits, one walk, one strikeout, complete game shutout on 91 pitches facing the minimum 27 batters.

This is the thing...he wasn't throwing it over the plate. He was throwing it 6" off and in the dirt yet we kept swinging. That's what was frustrating
