Warehouse fire last night in Oakland. Up to forty people might have perished. This is one eyewitness account (http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/12/03/inside-the-oakland-party-fire-one-rickety-staircase-inside-a-tinderbox.html).

Reportedly the only stairway was makeshift "kind of put together with pallets." Those people had very little chance.

Yeah, the place had a lot of diy aspects that where hell on the result. I used to live in the Fruitvale district in 1990, most of the warehouse living I ever interacted with was in San Francisco, less diy stuff too, more up to code. But same sort of artist space, prone to lots of people being there and accidents

Official death toll is up to 33 (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/04/oakland-ghost-ship-warehouse-fire-deaths-24)

Authorities did not immediately identify any victims, though most were believed to have been in their 20s and 30s. Kelly said that the dead include teenagers, and that some were foreign citizens. Melanie Ditzenerger urged people who are missing loved ones to “preserve any DNA-type of equipment”, such as combs and brushes, in case officials cannot quickly identify a victim.
